Hey guys, I'm looking for your suggestions for an anime series.
I LOVE Dragonabll, Tenchi and Gundam Wing so is there anything similar out there for a newbie?

Also is there any networks that show these animes online (money is a bit tight and I'm currently saving up for the Gundam boxset) or any legal website?
I'm not into downloading - I prefer to have the actual boxsets. But I'm broke at the moment so any free viewing animes out there would be greatly appreciated. When I win the lotto I'll have a library full of animes :D

    Cheers guys.

    Crunchy Roll is legal :)

If you like nice fight scenes, I suppose you'll like bleach and naruto.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is also an idea.

Eureka 7 is definitely worth a watch.

    Maybe try Escaflowne as well.

It's rather telling that half of the suggestions made here make me want to reach into the internet and slap people.

    Long Version:
If you liked Wing Gundam, I recommend Gundam 00 or Macross Frontier.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is also good, Bleach varies from great to terrible on an episode per episode basis.
I wouldn't watch the original Full Metal Alchemist now that Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood has as many episodes and is much better.
Most Lupin III movies are really enjoyable.

    Short Version:
Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1991)
Watch this, forget about anything else and just watch this.
You won't need another show ever again.

It's not that I LIKE bleach or naruto, it just strikes me as something he should check out.

wow, deathnote? I think the story is pretty heavy for a newbie :D, unless you love complicated, twisted plot ;)

OP, try out Naruto, the first 5 or 6 seasons are really good (tend to be a fair few filler episodes in the seasons after that). I came off DBZ and Gundam myself and felt right at home watching Naruto, it's in the same ballpark.

    I haven't started Shippuden yet so I can't comment.

Rah-xephon is definitely one to watch, Full metal panic is decent too but rah-xephon is easily one of the better anime of any genre

Death Note. It's great. Bleach too. It's wonderful. Hellsing. It's fun.

If you like complicated or dark stories I'd suggest:
Death Note, Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze, Elfen Lied

    Other than that I'd try:
Naruto, Bleach, Claymore, Jyu-Oh-Sei, D-Gray Man, Full Metal Alchemist, Code Geass, Darker Than Black, Hellsing

    Speedgrapher FTW!

It's the story of a photographer who is imbibbed with a power directly related to the thing that gives him the most pleasure in life: snapping off photographs. Ends up getting the power to blow up anything he photographs.
It's pretty epic, the animation and story is fairly consistant AAAAND the main protagonist is voiced by Chris "Vegeta" Sabat. :D

    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

(In no particular order, all awesome)

Hey guys - thanks for all of your wonderful suggestions. I've written out a list - they all sound really good.

So far I've watched Speed Grapher (which I loved) - thanks for recommending it. I wish there was more than one series (although they ended things pretty well).

Now not sure what to watch next. One thing is for sure I've plenty of choice.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it. :)

to be honest the beginning puts a lot of people off, depending on their taste in anime really, but it's really really good. it's so sad near the end though :(

No love for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex? I'm a complete newbie with anime series but got into it after watching the first 2 Ghost in the Shell movies recently and am loving it so far, so well written!
Is Evangelion similarly adult? I just read the blurb on wiki that Hotaru linked to but a crack team of mech piloting pubescent teens would lead me to believe no. :p I have a copy of one of the Evangelion films on dvd somewhere from a few years ago but never watched it.

Full Metal Panic (no love for this one? /hang head in sorrow)
    Code Geass
    Gundam 00
Slayers (really old school style but oh so much I have laughed with this series, only do first two seasons)

some ppl are big fans of the show but dont expect it to be anything like the movies. i was the same as u and tbh i thought the show was unbearable to watch after the 2 movies.

    No mention of Berserk yet?

I can't recommend that show enough. The manga too. They're both absolutely epic. Some great great characters.

I'm not a huge fan of anime or manga but really loved the above mentioned one.

    Hi,

You say you're not a huge anime or manga fan but I say you're not a huge anime or manga fan YET! :)

Howl's Moving Castle is by Studio Ghibli so you should probably start there. The best know film would be Spirited Away but Princess Mononoke is one of my faves.

    Enjoy... and keep watching! :)

Firstly, you should read the book if you haven't already because it's awesome. (and really different)

Would you be open to watching a tv show or are you only looking for other moveis? I'll just assume the latter for now as it's probably a lot less daunting. :)

Out of the Ghibli movies I'd suggest going for either Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke initially. (Whisper Of The Heart would have to be my personal favourite though:))

You should try some madhouse movies as well, my favourites are Millennium Actress and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

I hope you find something you like. :D

Well the first one is a hentai series based on making a deal with Satan (also available as a game apparently) but don't know the second one but I guess in a similar vein.

To OP I'd not download either of those but try Akira, it is really nicely done though bloody at times. Another option would be Ghost in the Shell, also very nicely done (and movie 2 go even more details) but also action orientated. Then there is Final Fantasy as a movie but that is mainly computer animated.

I highly recomend these animes that im listing to anyone who hasn't seen them :)

Fooly Cooly or as its also known as FLCL, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Die buster are really great animes if your into giant robots and lots of random funny stuff.

Cowboy Bebop is another great one.

Naruto, Bleach and One Piece are great animes and even greater mangas. The anime for these three series run for along time and are still going. I would sugest that you watch them with then english subs and not dub and to skip all the filler episodes (episodes that go off the story of the mangas), some of those are painfull to watch.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Way better than the first series of FMA in my opinion. Again you might be better off watching with english subs a im not sure how far along they are with the dub but the voice acting was great for the old series and i know there using almost all of the main voice acters from it, except Alphonse.

If you like romantic comidys His and Her Circumstances is and amazing anime. The only bad thing i can say about it is that is stops realy suddenly, I had to start reading the manga to find out what happens propperly and i thought it was amazing.

If you like hack and slash animes with deamons and monsters everywhere Berserk is a great anime. I heard alot of great things about the manga of it too.

Soul Eater is another great one with alot of high quality animation and is great if you like magic and interesting weapon fights. The manga for this is amazing also.

Thats all i can think of right now, if i think of any more ill put up another post.

    If you're looking for a site, http://www.animeshippuuden.com/watch/
It has a ton of shows, full series and full episodes. I always use it.

As for a show, if you're looking for something short to whet the appetite, I'd say Afro Samurai. It shocks me how few people have heard of it, let alone watched it.
There's two series, each with 5 episodes. A fantastic plot, great setting, and the main character is voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson :P

I also suggest Death Note. I never read the manga, but the anime is amazing. It only has around 40 episodes, so it doesn't require weeks and weeks of watching, it would be a short and exciting viewing experience.

The show itself is much more darker and atmospheric than what people are regularly used to and probably grew up from anime's such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, and help them see another side to them, instead of happy-go-lucky characters and stories that are pretty much about friendship and happiness and flowers and puppy dogs. (Hey, I'm not saying I hate those anime's, I grew up with them as well after all, I'll always love them...that way...oh yes)

I'd agree for FMA and Death note, but elfen lied is a bit much i am a big anime far and but for this if it's not girls in the nip, it's blood everywhere, i mean seriously down with this sort of thing.

    Hey people! (:
I've recently aquired a liking for Anime and Manga,
Just wanted to know what some good Anime shows/films, manga novels/comics and shops would be (: (shops in Dublin)
I love Death Note and Hellsing if its any help (:
    Thanks <3

Well, there's a Hellsing OVA (http://anidb.net/a3296) which is going on at the moment.

Seeing as you're new to anime, the world is your oyster, isn't it? So I'm just gonna reccomend some obvious ones.
Code Geass (http://anidb.net/a4521) is a futuristic show about a guy who can control people and tries to take over the world.
Cowboy Bebop (http://anidb.net/a23) is about bounty hunters, it's set in space, but there's a real western feel to it. Every episode has a different music theme to it.

    Film wise, I'd recommend:
Ghost in the Shell (http://anidb.net/a61) which is about cyborg police. The net has connected everything. Discusses what exactly defines a human.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭Improbable

For movie, can't go wrong with Ghost in the Shell and Akira

oh, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Very psychological is the only description i can think of.
