    http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/07/15/supernatural-season-6-spoilers/

    Eric Kripke speaks

Why did you decide to step down as showrunner?
ERIC KRIPKE: We were reaching the end of this five-year story line [so] I thought the timing was right. I knew that we were closing this chapter and opening a new one. It felt like it was the right time to take a step back and focus on new projects, but still keep my grubby little mitts in the show. It was a lot about Sera and her enthusiasm and her ambition. I really think after five years of all of my crap, to have someone who has a fresh perspective and a fresh energy on these characters and this universe is healthy for the show. Supernatural has always been a show about reinvention. We try really hard not to do the same thing. I thought that Sera’s [increased] involvement really helped guarantee that this season is going to feel a little different, a little fresher. She has a different sensibility.

What exactly will your role be?
KRIPKE: I see my job as being a safety net and just making sure that the show falls in the broadest possible parameters…. Sera and Bob [Singer] are pitching episode ideas to me. I’m in the room so far for every episode break. I pitch a couple of episode ideas, pitch a couple issues of how to fix some problems and some breaks. I’m giving some script notes. I’m still in it; I think, frankly, Sera and Bob wish I backed the hell up.

Will you be writing any episodes?
KRIPKE: I think I will certainly be writing an episode this year. I am also slated to direct an episode in February.

What do you say to those fans who felt the show should have ended with season 5?
KRIPKE: My answer to that is time will tell. I have high hopes for this season. I remember the same kind of concerns when we bumped off Yellow Eyes in season 2. We killed their Big Bad and where were we going to go now? We always found a different place to go. People forget that I didn’t [originally] want angels in the show. Then we introduced the angels and then it spun the story line in a way that was really rich for us. This is a show that ends story lines and starts new ones and reinvents itself. I think because it is hardwired into the DNA of the show, it will weather a lot of transition and growth. The question is not should it have ended, the question is, Is the new story line compelling and interesting and is it an arena of this universe that we haven’t explored yet and is it putting Sam and Dean into new situations that we haven’t seen before? I think it does all of the above.
Okay, what is the new story line?
KRIPKE: One of the first things Sera and Bob talked to me about was that the angel thing is rightfully exhausted, so where do you go from there? Not to say that angels and demons won’t be a part of the story line, because they will. Castiel will be there. Crowley will be there. The beloved characters will be threading into the story. But the great undiscovered country of Supernatural is kind of right in front of our face: creatures and monsters. We have had so many creature episodes but we haven’t actually explained where they came from—[similar] to the way we have explored angels and demons. How do they feel about the situations they are in? Are they from here? Where did the first ones come from? How did werewolves and vampires and shape-shifters all begin anyway? I thought that was a really smart notion on [Sera and Bob's] part, just exploring the history of that, because that was something that we never investigated on the show.

How does Grandpa [Mitch Pileggi] fit into this?
KRIPKE: He’s representative of the other side of this exploration, which is that Sam and Dean have a family of hunters that they never knew they had. Their grandfather is the head of that family. Remember, it’s not the Winchesters who are famous hunters, it’s the Campbells. And we are saying that the Campbells are part of a timeline of hunters that have been there since the country’s origins. As Sera put it, they were hacking heads off vampires on the Mayflower. For Sam and Dean to really tap into a family history, which they never knew they had and again never really investigated before, is pretty interesting to us.

Great that they are finishing the angel and demon thing, I was losing interest..

I thought that was fantastic overall. Best storyline they have had. Perhaps best it didn't go on and on and get stale but at least it won't be gone fully with Castiel still around.

I seen bits and pieces of supernatural back in 05/06. Then I kinda forgot about the show up untill about a month ago. Since then i've binged all 5 series and I've just finished watching the last episode of series 5 moments ago.

I have to say I loved every second of it, and loved all the characters in it.

But to get on topic, There are two things I was hoping for series 6 (or future series) and that is that Sam and Dean try "hunt" God.

Dean said to castiel at the very end "I'm coming for God next", and I have to say it would be a very interesting story arc.

The second thing I was hoping for was that they wouldn't leave the angels out of it. I thought it was pure brilliance having angels in it, yet not having the angels as good guys!

I don't think theres anything tv/movie related I'm looking forward more to than the return of Supernatural!

Although, I did only start watching a few months ago, so watched them all in a batch. Going to be strange watching them week after week, don't know if I'll be able to do it!

Do you not know who they are? Or are you wondering how they're back?
Because if its the latter, the same question can go for the others mentioned...

When has "death" stopped anyone returning on this show

No, I know who they are.
I just thought their story sort of finished.. I assumed they'll be back in some sort of flashback scenario.

I mean John is different.. his role is as always important to the core of the story / the boy's motivation - but Jo and Ellen? I mean their death was shocking and very well done, but thought they'd served their purpose to be honest.

at least kripke still has some involvement it will be interesting to see how the show progresses without him

I'm seriously looking forward to this! Really hope Death features again, his episode was the best of season five, I personally think so.

The show is adding a new angel who's gone a bit rogue. The possibly recurring character is described as an attractive charmer who appears slightly manic on the surface but carries a great sadness.

    'Supernatural' to reference 'Twilight'
    By Morgan Jeffery

Supernatural showrunner Sera Gamble has revealed that an upcoming episode of the show's sixth season will poke fun at the Twilight franchise.

She told TV Guide that other popular vampire series such as True Blood and The Vampire Diaries will also be referenced in the instalment, which is provisionally titled 'Live Free or Twi-Hard'.

"We're doing an episode about how vampires pretending to be Edward Cullen or the Salvatore brothers or Bill Compton are bad for you," she explained.

Gamble revealed that the episode will explore the current romantic fascination with vampires, popularised by Twilight and similar brands.

"Chicks are just throwing themselves at them!" she joked. "They think that 'vampire' equals 'I'm not going to try to have sex with you'. They will still take advantage of our children! They will turn you into a vampire or eat you."

Supernatural returns to The CW on September 24.

Now this I'm looking forward to. We all remember how great their swipe at "Grey's Anatomy" was! :D

^ agree Basq...i'll even watch that one!
As a side note, last week "Huge" did a parody of Twilight, called Phantasma....they really took the piss! :-)

I really like when Supernatural pokes fun at itself as well. Heck, they had an episode called "Jump the Shark"! Or the great episode "The Real Ghostbuster" at the Supernatural convention where the writer (his name escapes me now) says, "It's not jumping the shark if you never land" over the closing credits.

More details here but they showed a preview of 6x04 (an episode called '
    Weekend At Bobby's
    ') which Jensen Ackles directed.

Jensen: "I'm looking forward to killing some vampires properly this season. There's a lot of vampires going on these days. I'd like to show people how it's done properly. Cut this pasty, waify **** out."

    :pac:

Series star Misha Collins warns viewers not to expect the same old Supernatural when the show returns Sept. 24, especially with regards to Castiel's relationship with the Brothers Winchester. "Castiel has his own host of problems ... dealing with maintaining a balance of power in heaven," Collins says. "It's really not something Sam and Dean are any longer involved with. Cas is much less concerned with Sam and Dean and much more concerned with his own problems."

I'm still quite worried about season 6 tbh. I'm fairly sure i'll still really enjoy it, but i just don't see how they can follow up on last season, without everything being so underwhelming. Hopefully they can make it work, but we'll see...

Yes :D It was the first thing I spotted. I thought the article was about Daddy Winchester returning :(

Dammit, that trailer actually makes me want to watch the new episodes now. I had given up after the really poor ending to the last season and wasn't planning to watch any more, but this looks like its actually going to try and fix some of the mistakes, and hopefully give a bit of proper conclusion to the story.

Season opener now out, [backs out of thread slowly...........run!]

Any worries about Sera Gamble taking over are out the window. Relatively slow episode (and dare I say serious - not too many laughs), but a really great start to the season and sets things up nicely.

Not sure about starting with Bob Seger instead of AC/DC though. :)

No "Carry on my wayward son"?

    We are not amused.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

    That just felt completely.. off..

Pacing was all wrong, everything felt very slow and deliberate. There was no real atmosphere to it as Ive come to expect from Supernatural. No tension at all.Just felt like the actors were just going through the motions. Camerawork completely different, seeming to focus on invididual shots during speech instead of the usual wide shot. They seem to have seriously cut down on the use of music too. The script wasn't the best either tbh, It just didn't sound anything like the usual Sam and Dean!

I know the showrunner stepped down but I didn't expect things to change this much! Hopefully it improves as the season goes on.

I have to agree with you on that - the show just didn't feel like it used to. Though it must be said that it's an intriguing prospect that we might see some new creatures we hadn't seen before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Was a bit pissed there was no AC/DC at the start. Or is it Kansas they use for the season opener? Either way, would've preferred if they'd kept the trademark music the same.
Apart from that, I didn't have any problems with the episode - they had to set things up for the season and I think that was achieved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,194 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Yeah... wasn't 'Carry On My Wayward Son' only used for the season finales? Typically an AC/DC song is used in season openers.

Just checked the season finale to season five - false alarm.

Quite a slow pace, and the motw was a bit dull, but overall a promising start to the new season.
Anyone else think that opening scene with Dean was brilliant?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭DingDong

I'm a massive fan, but I don't know how I feel about the opener. It lacked something maybe it was humour. I'm not sure what to make of the get along gang either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭angelll

Really liked the opening sequence :) But seriously? Sam is back for a year? How did dean recover from the poison? Is he hallucinating the whole episode? Or maybe just the ending...I'm confused about quite a bit of it,hopefully it will become clear soon..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,888 ✭✭✭Rsaeire

Season opener? What a load of crap! I don't have much faith in the show's current direction and there was hardly any consistency with the season 5 finale. They'd better start making better episodes otherwise the show is doomed.

There was definitely something lacking in that episode, I mean inevitably after the apocolypse storyline there is gonna be a sense of anticlimax but for me after all the resurrections on this show there is also a lack of tension so what if anything happened to Liz & Ben if this show has proved anything its that nobody stays dead which for me takes alot of the drama out of things .

Plus where the fcuk was "Carry on my wayward son" previously montage .
