Does it do anything besides altering the signal bars, is there meant to be some press conference tomorrow about something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

    Restarted iTunes and downloading now.

    579.3MB- 4 hours remaining

It makes jailbreaking a bit harder, yep there’s a conference tmz to discuss the phone, Apple will prob talk about what’s wrong and how they WILL fix it I hope

    Why not update doylers?

No jailbreak yet, having the ability to mod the phone in anyway is by far the best part of owning an iphone

    305Mb on a 3G

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

It's over 500MB for iPhone 4 because of the higher res images.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,816 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Ok if this update makes the reception look better, does this mean the iphone will hold onto signal (2g/3g) longer now because it thinks it's better now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭grolschmore

got it up and running, had to switch back to apples server instead of sauriks! for some reason wouldnt go through his. cant notice any changes bar the signal bars. my phone never lost signal with the "death grip" so all is good here!

Nope just makes it LOOK better. Wont affect how the phone uses the signal. This update only changes how the bars look.

Have you a link to back up that?, surley if the phone thinks it has better signal it will operate accordingly?

Ill post links below, see you have it wrong the phone will have a signal, whatever it is, and will use a formula to decide how to display the signal its receiving, the problem was that the formula was wrong thus showing an incorrect signal status to the user. The update now shows you the true signal status the phone is receiving and using. Thanks how I understand it anyway.

No, the iPhone can only deal with the actual signal it gets, the bars mean nothing to it, they are for your benefit only. Also, they won't make the signal look better, they'll actually make it look worse in a number of cases because the new formula is supposedly more accurate whereas the old formula overstated the signal strength.

Just done the update and now I have less signal bars, I thought this was meant to have the opposite effect, where I had full I now only have 1/2.

    Edit:
    Now you tell me!!

This has to go down in History as the stupidest phone update ever. How to screw your signal in one easy update.

I was happy thinking I had full reception.

It doesn't do anything with your signal, just changes a display on the screen.

Just updated with 3gs on o2. uber waste of time imo! 1 bar where i always had full bars!! Well done Apple....again!

Well as far as i'm concerned and the rest of the general public it looks like it destroys your reception.

    After:

The only way I can read it is my reception has gone to pot in one update.

So the iphone has always been crap for reception but apple were hiding the fact. If that's not misleading consumers I don't know what is:pac:

I think you underestimate the intelligence of the general public. Most will know their signal strength hasn't changed a bit I'm sure.
The only way I can read it is my reception has gone to pot in one update.
Your reception hasn't changed a bit. I'm not sure how you thought it would, did you not read anything about this update before installing it?

They used a different formula to create the display. What the display shows is irrelevant in all fairness, what matters it whether or not you can use the phone/internet etc. That answer remains the same now as it was before the update, and the same as it would be no matter what formula was used in the phone display.

To be honest, I can't. The update was clear about what it was for. If someone downloaded the update without reading anything about what it did, then they probably wouldn't even notice what had changed! And seriously, who relies on the signal bars? Just try using the phone, then you'll find out how your reception is.

Is this showing us now how bad the network reception really is in our areas:rolleyes:
VF O2 etc will be pleased
