Brilliant news. Been waiting a while for news on this album. Can't wait.

Thats great news. I actually liked Chase this Light. Saw them in the Olympia and thought it was good live.

Was at that Olympia show too, great show. I suppose my opinion on CTL fluctuates, sometimes I think it's a great, fun album, sometimes I think it's kind of throwaway and homogenous.

This may be of interest to some of you. Jim Adkins posting on the band's message board about the new album.

Excellent news. Need a fresh dose cause it's been a while, though I did only see them in March :D

Just on Chase The Light, Here It Goes is one of my favourite JEW songs.

I haven't heard anything from them since Futures.... :(

I hope it's similar to Bleed American. It seems to be the general consensus that Clarity is their best album, but I think BA is the best they've done. So many stand out songs on it.

Probably just as well Jew have been terrible since Bleed American.

Probably just as well Jew have been terrible since Bleed American.

Really? I have to say for me there was some of their best work on Futures and Chase This light, different strokes for different folks I guess. I like all of there stuff pretty much evenly and I'll go through phases of listening to older stuff or newer stuff.

Seen them 5 times live :) Nearly freaked when they did Disintegration last time in the olympia :D We met them out side afterwards and had our pics taken with Jim and Tom, spent about 15 minutes chatting with Tom while Jim was mobbed and signing etc. Lovely guy, didn't get the impression he was mad to get away either like with some bands I have met /I'm looking at you Alkaline Trio

I'm thinking it will likely be a spring date here again in 2011?

Well that article mentions they'll be playing some UK dates in November so the likelihood is they'll come over for Dublin and Belfast while they're at it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

That is good news indeed, reason I figured March was they played the last 2 times here in march.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,514 ✭✭✭Dermo

got confirmation the other day that they are definitely coming to Dublin in November. now just gotta wait to find out on what date. It will be my 21st time seeing them :)

    Album art:
    invented-600x600.jpg

    There will be 12 tracks.

The song 'Stop' from the CTL sessions will be making a return. The leaked demo from CTL recordings is a catchy little ditty, feel free to PM me if you want it.
Yeah, Stop is on the record but it's a totally new version, which is, in our opinion, way better.

    Track list:
    Action Needs an Audience
    Coffee and Cigarettes
    Cut
    Evidence
    Heart is Hard to Find
    Higher Devotion
    Invented
    Littlething
    Mixtape
    Movielike
    My Best Theory
    Stop

New song played at the KROQ Weenie Roast festival a few months ago [I'm guessing this is 'Action Needs an Audience']:

New song played by Jim at a solo show a few months back too (possibly renamed, possibly not appearing on the album):

    I am very excite :)

Great stuff, need a new fix of Jimmy Eat World.

Been listening to Futures, Chase this Light and Bleed American for years now - some great tunes on them. Particularly like this one:

You do know that's not off of the upcoming album, right? Just making sure. That song was their Stay On My Side Tonight EP.

Futures and Chase This Light do have a couple of fillers in each but are generally pretty good. Futures in particular. I just hate the inclusion of bonus tracks on each album. They pad out the albums with bonus filler!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

I think that's likely down to the record company. Not sure why they do that myself but Jimmy seem especially prone to release in different territories with different bonus tracks.

Weezer are another who have done that and in their case in the extreme 20 songs on the last 2 albums if you take the bonus tracks of each release. I don't condone piracy but that may drive you to it.

    *is aghast*

[my opinion]Jimmy's bonus tracks and B-sides are often better than album material! Be Sensible and Beautiful Is are better than most of CTL, and I think they would have vastly improved a borderline-homogenously poppy album with some much-needed slower, deeper songs. Zach Lind (the drummer) has even said that their one regret with CTL was not including Be Sensible (Beautiful Is is quite 'out there' and would probably jar with the tone of the album, but is still a fantastic, experimental song). Shame is gloriously heavy and I think it would fit Futures much better than Nothingwrong, and The Most Beautiful Things (included as a bonus track on the deluxe reissue of Bleed American) is one of my all-time favourite classic Jimmy Eat World songs.[/my opinion]

Addendum: Lead single, My Best Theory, is out tomorrow. Huzzah!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,728 ✭✭✭fluke

Myabe I'm just being hard on the extra songs...but I just feel that their respective inclusions at the end of Futures and CTL are misplaced!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,779 ✭✭✭A Neurotic

    Lead single now streaming here.

I like it! Definitely crunchier than anything on CTL, kind of gives me a Get It Faster/Clarity (the song) vibe. On my third listen, and it's growing on me.

nearly panicked this morning booking tickets, forgot password for ticketmaster. By the time I got the email to reset it I was being told no tickets left

Checked back 20 minutes later and they were on sale again phew :o

Tripod is a nice clean and modern venue. Only thing is though it can be a right squeeze when full, few times at gigs there I really felt like they over sold it .

They haven't released a bad album.

Not sure if this is going to be on the album, but it is going to be on the 7" vinyl with my best theory they are giving with pre orders in the us , loved this when I got the CTL demos a few years back , so delighted to see it get a nice polish and shine in a new recording.

Got my tickets for Dublin in the post today, just the two and a half months to wait now. Have had them on in the car for the last month, so I only mumble through three quarters of the words when I am singing along.

    Good review here:
I've had the pleasure of hearing this album through my work. Don't ask for a link, because I don't have one. I'm purely here just to get fans excited (as I myself am a big fan).

To get this out of the way, I was not a big fan of Chase this Light. My favorite album of theirs is Futures. Overall, I don't think Jimmy Eat World has ever made a bad album, but just didn't like Chase at all. So for those that were in the same boat as me (not liking the last one), I can safely say this album is a return to form. This has classic Jimmy Eat World all over it. I hear sounds from Bleed American, Futures, Clarity even. It's like a mixture of all their best moments.

Don't mistake my above comments as it being their masterpiece. I wouldn't go that far, it's not perfect. But it's pretty damn amazing. Let's see...

    1. Heart Is Hard To Find: I was a little taken back by this track being the intro. It's all acoustic strumming, and very light. A very emotional sound. Strumming + hand claps with lyrics like "I can't compete, with the clear eyes of strangers. I'm more and more replaced by my friends each night. I can't compete, I just can't recover, how many years it's been, it's day 1 in my mind, it's the first step each time. The heart is hard to find" As he beautifully croons "The Heart Is Hard to Find" over and over; the drummer is lightly tapping the bass as it pounds in sync with the strumming. Then, beautiful strings (violin) layer the background. After the chorus ends, the tension starts to build. This entire segue has Adkins raising his vocals as he bites on every lyric. Violins are now soaring. "I can't compete, with a new found religion. The good word seems everywhere, the good words only. I can't compete, with a real education, all the ****ed up things you say, couldn't possibly be, any less help to me. The song ends with keys, and the Violins swirling as Adkins does angelic back up harmonies. It's really a beautiful song.

    2. My Best Theory: Okay so wow, what a kick in the teeth. By now you have all heard this song probably a million times I'm sure. In comparison to track 1, it really knocks you on your ass. The fast paced guitar riffs, the epic chorus. Not going to say much on this one, as everyone has heard it.

    3. Evidence: This song is a slow burner. It has a very cool/paced vibe. Track starts off with a muted guitar riff that plays back and forth, then the song kicks in with drums. The entire song has that muted riff (underlying the song). The chorus on this track has that same laid back vibe I talked about (it has a great flow) and is subdued. "Hanging up the sheet, between our face, you won't have to see, evidence." Then CRASHING guitars come down heavy, as it just explodes with distortion. The song pulls back "Evidence...."(almost a whisper) The song gets back into the original pace, but this time it's more intense. The drums now hit harder, Adkins sings a little bit more emotional. And it leads up to another crashing guitar sequence. The last 2 min of the song is just a barrage of heavy riffs and drumming, another rendition of the chorus (but now the background is layered with those heavy riffs) - the song fades out to radio distortion and light guitar strumming.

    4. Higher Devotion: This might be my favorite song on the album. The track starts off with this REALLY loud guitar distortion/feedback and segues into this amazing bass line that rolls back and forth, then it all comes together and funnels into electronic sounds that shakes until the song explodes. Adkins hasn't sounded this sinister in a long time. Every lyric he spits has this underlying tension. "The quiet should be nice, but isn't. I guess we're going to spend the day like this, in psychic screaming. Don't you feel my eye lasers hit, i stare you down, but god your skin is thick. What's it take to notice? The song then breaks into this chorus that sounds like MGMT. It has a very electro bassy vibe, and Adkins vocals are high pitched and have a distorted warble layered over them. The chorus is almost funky, but damn it's extremely catchy. It will get people dancing for sure. "Show me you can read my mind, ready my mind". The chorus is followed by this totally bad ass guitar riff that really cuts deep. The 2nd half of the song (after the chorus) slows down..and the drums are the only thing beating. The song then explodes and one of the catchiest guitar solos they have ever written fills out the rest of the song. It has reverb so it almost reminds me of how U2's Edge plays, but wow. This solo is almost orchestral, and actually reminds me of something straight off of Futures (just the tone of it). It just soars. This is easily one of my favorite moments off the album, and actually Jimmy Eat World's entire career. I could see this track dividing fans depending on how set you are on them having a specific sound. But regardless, this track is really catchy and has some of their most interesting sounds to date.

    5. Movielike: Okay I'm going to use an awful cliche/analogy here. But the song starts off like the stomping and clapping from "We Will Rock You". It's loud, energetic. But it's not in the same rhythm, so please don't think it will sound like Queen. It really doesn't (and when you guys finally hear it, you'll know what I'm talking about). I was just using something I know people can grasp on to. The track then starts with guitar strumming. This isn't a rocker like the last 2 tracks, this one is very light guitar strumming, and has a really sweet/upbeat chorus. "A face coming down the street. All alone with your things. The apartment story. Clean up and make my start. Not the way I hoped for, welcome to New York. "Nothing, movielike, and nothing magic. People just tire and fight the constant battle, waiting to see a sign, then you see the best alright". A soaring chorus of OOOOOOHHs and piano follows immediately after. The song closes out with all the instruments fading out, and just a raising chorus of people singing "oooooh" (with claps). This is def the "feel good" song on the album. Very infectious and light hearted.

    6. Coffee and Cigarettes: Okay so I lied, MAYBE this song is my favorite? Really, this track is extremely catchy. I don't know who sings with Adkins on this song, but a female singer duets with him. And it's just such an endearing/fun song. Very warm. "When I finally finished school, it was the first thing I did. What every townie kid dreams of, I packed up and started West. A thousand dollars I had saved and my sisters two cassettes. The dead from Filmore East, and Ottis Redding's greatest hits.". "Coffee and Cigarettes, as simple as it gets. Of all the things I'll think I'll miss. Staying up with you, Coffee and Ciagrettes." The track has this very infectious heavy guitar riff that the song centers itself around. Adkins and the female vocalist play off each other, as they trade off lines. This is pop perfection.

    7. Stop: This track reminds me of something off of Futures. "No reason why, I can't help following with my eyes. Even at my best, I guess I'm still just one of them. I see it all in my head, the cool hands on your sweat, you want to make me mad, stop because I am. The song is actually very simple compared to the other tracks, but lyrically it's very engaging. The chorus itself is catchy. 2 min into the song, this epic guitar solo just splits the track down the middle.

    8. Littlething: This track kind of reminds me of Sigur Ros. Down to the intro of the piano going back and forth (distorted) - to the marching bass that sounds larger than life. This track really goes for a big sound. It has looped chimes throughout the entire song, and it really sounds like something a post rock band would do (but with singing over it). The chorus is very uplifting and soars. "It's just the little thing, buried in the other things, would you stay with me tonight. There is a quiet dream, I'm not supposed to think, either way I'm way out of my mind, could you be with me tonight." The track builds up as each minute passes (strings being layered in the background). Really pretty song, and is truly uplifting (musically).

    9. Cut: As the title suggests, this song is emotional. Down to the jarring guitar strumming (which is acoustic, but distorted). This track is raw, and the lyrics reflect that. "It's always some baggage you got to check. And yeah I'm trying. I hope you understand. Yeah I'm sorry boy, I'm not cut for this no more. Yes I loved you boy, but I'm not cut for this no more.". This is easily one of the most emotional tracks they have done in a long time. It really reminds me of something off their older album. The naked vocals, the sincerity in the emotional delivery.

    10. Action Needs An Audience: Just like "My Best Theory" knocked you on your ass after "Heart Is Hard to Find", so too does Action. This song has a ridiculous guitar riff that really drives hard. The song has a great vibe and the vocals just seem to bounce off the drums/riff. "I'm hypnotized by rituals now that I'm on my own. Tranquilized like an animal, all because I lost control." "Are you Tuning into our conversations, oh yeah you'll get your chance. The bigger, the brighter, the illuminated, control the audience. Stylistically, this really doesn't sound like Jimmy Eat World. It actually reminds of Bad Religion (down to the infectious riffs, and the singing). Stylistically, I kind of question why this song was put on the album. Especially the placing. You see, like Futures, this album essentially ends with three slower songs. However, they through Action right between those three. I have to think that maybe they were concerned people would not like 15 min of slow songs back ending the album, so they put this track in to keep people alert. That said, this song is really incredible. I'm by no way saying it's a bad song. In fact, it's one of my favorite. I just thought I should note the stylistic difference on this track, and the placement.

    11. Invented: Just like 23, they decided to close this album on an epic note. And they do this by pairing two of the albums longest tracks. This track pushes past the 7 min mark and Mixtape pushes past 6 min mark (these two songs combined are 13 min alone). Unlike 23, the majority of this song is actually acoustic, and very slow and breathy. It only takes off around 5 min, with crashing guitars and drums. But boy is the pay off worth it. And not to say the acoustic parts are bland. They are actually very beautiful, and raw, and emotional. Just like Cut, this is a throwback to older emo. I imagine listening to this is in quiet room, Adkins sitting on a stool with just his acoustic guitar and voice. The song does feature some beautiful harmonies, and bells (it starts off very singular and raw, but builds with layers).

    12. Mixtape: The final track starts out with POUNDING drums, with some electronic beeps. The track just sounds epic from the start. "Maybe we could put your tape back on, rewind till the moment we went wrong. I was always just a little bit lost, knowing what I do, I should have thought." "You don't get to walk away, walk away now. It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now. You DON'T get to walk away, walk away now. It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now." The track is very somber, desperate. It builds up, slowly adding different layers of sounds. Pianos, strings. While the song is very repetitive in the "You don't get to walk away" - it works. It drives home the emotional pleas (the lyrics) of Adkins. It's a very reflective track, and asks the "what if" in a relationship. The track slowly fades out to breathy vocals that eventually become the only thing you hear. It's a sublime way to end an album full of emotional ups and downs. A triumph.

Conclusion: This album is really good. If you were unhappy with Chase This Light (or even if you did like that album) - this will impress. They crafted a record that sounds familiar (touches on all their other albums) - but also comes across as sounding fresh. This has the makings of a classic Jimmy Eat World album (musically/stylistically). For the record, I do not have this album. I heard it on a stream through work, and the stream expired. Please don't ask, as I have nothing. Excuse me if any of these lyrics are off by a tiny smidge, or if my descriptions weren't any better. I tried my best to gather my thoughts after only hearing this 4 times. It's hard trying to articulate an album with so much depth into words. But I thought I would at least share what I heard with you guys (sorry if it was no help). I just want to get people excited as I am for this release. Anyways, I reckon this album to be a 8.5-9.0 range (just my initial impression)."

Wow not sure what to think of that review after hearing the track "Movielike" earlier on. "feel good" song on the album" or "Very infectious and light hearted" were well off the mark as far as I'm concerned. Did not like it all :(
