It's finally out. This roots your Desire and flashes a permanent recovery menu to your phone (ClockworkRecovery).

    No goldcard or anything needed?!!

Might try this out, thank you. Does rooting void all warranties though? Any disadvantages one should be aware of?

anything similar for the Hero. if a stable 2.2 rom with Sense UI comes out I will be rooting the phone for it.

Typical! I received my new miniSD card yesterday after waiting a couple of weeks, and put together my gold card last night.
Excuse my ignorance, but would I be right in saying that this won't actually flash a replacement ROM, it just replaces the Android recovery functionality? So could I apply this to my phone and make a backup of my existing ROM, before trying out a new (2.2) ROM?

I'm presuming this is just for those of use who wish to root our Devices and then install custom roms.

ok done. so now what do I do to take advantage of this? this is like jailbreaking for the iphone yeah?

    edit:- some q&a here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked2

It also allows you to take a full backup of your phone (nandroid style!). What I'm wondering is: will this replace your existing stock ROM with a custom ROM (at which point we'll have lost the opportunity to perform a nandroid backup or our existing setups) or does it just replace the recovery functionality, so we can still do a full backup of the existing phone rom.

From what this thread says it roots it and gives you clockwork recovery - you need to find whatever rom you want and flash it on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,850 ✭✭✭Cianos

noob question; What is a rom? Is it the likes of Froyo etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

This doesn't wipe your data or anything, no? Just adds root, everything else stays as is?

just did this a few mins ago - awesome one click root on a mac :D

no wipe, all data/apps remain. sweet.

oh and don't forget to google "marketenabler" and download the apk - transfer to your phones micro sd card and install via Astro File Manager (or equivalent app) and you can get full market access by spoofing your provider (I use t-mobile US) :)

MarketEnabler stopped being developed earlier this year and apparently won't work with Froyo. It has been rewritten and rebadged as MarketAccess and can be downloaded from here

    ;)

Trying it now. Connected all up. Ran reflash.exe and now all it says is "pushing recovery image". Anyone any ideas?

EDIT: Copped it now. Forgot the Hboot sequence. Currently backing up via nandroid as we speak :)

When I run MarketEnabler it says I dont have SU access but I did root it.

    Seems I need Superuser.apk... I found this:

The Desire has Android 2.1 = Eclair

    Android 2.0/2.1 (Eclair)

    2.2 (Froyo)

have no idea what this is doing to the phone. only downloads from the website if i access through the phone, errors on page when accessed through PC.
installed the drivers for recovery in windows as explained on their page (why i dont know)

downloaded through phone and then copied to PC. run program and all it says is its pushing image for ages when i switch to sync/debugging mode.

Im going to go the long way around this and read a step by step and try to understand exactly what im doing to my phone and why.

god i feel old and stupid

You installed HBOOT? I had the same issue until I installed that. Heres a guide:

ok I did all that (install HBOOT, ran the 1 click rooter, installed SuperUser.apk, installed MarketEnabler.apk, went into MarketEnabler and emulated T-Mobile US) and now I can see the paid apps in the normal Market place....

Ok, couple of questions on this. I know they have probably been covered in other threads on rooting, but not sure if the apply to this method in same way.

    1. Does rooting void the warranty on the desire? I have googled it and it seems to be a bit inconclsuive. However, reading the warranty posted on the HTC website for android phones in western europe, it doesn't say anything about root access.

It does state that the warranty will not apply if caused by "unauthorized modifications or connections" but doesn't actually state with is or is not authrorized. it also doesn't whether this is referring to modification of hardware, software or both.

In any event, unless the defect was down to the rooting itself, this clause would not affect!

    2. Does rooting the phone in this manner in any way affect the stock rom? For example, if i root but leave the stock rom on, can I continue to receive OTA or other updates automatically, or would i have to reset back to factory state to get updates?

    3. is there any danger of bricking the phone with this method?

    4. How hard or easy is it to undo this if needs be?

    5. How hard would it be to flash a froyo rom on once i have it rooted? And how hard to undo that?

Sorry, i know they are all covered before, but this rooting thing can be a bit confusing for the casual user.

So now that we have one shot, risk free (well pretty much anyways) rooting anyone installed any froyo ROMs to see how they went?
Will be taking the plunge my self once I get my new SD card. From looking at the thread over on the XDA forums there seems to be quite a few out there...

just to clarify, MarketAccess doesn't give you access to "free" paid apps...it gives you access to the full market, where u can buy apps that are otherwise blocked in Ireland.

antodeco is getting his "free" apps somewhere else...

Yup worked fine for me as well, ran it from my work PC this morning. So time to think about some new ROM then I guess? Any recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭Gryzor

I'm using this one...find it very stable, no issues so far....if u pay for the online kitchen, u can customise the ROM as u want it...

A handy little utility for flashing ROM's is Rom Manager...saves messing around in the recovery console...

I would presume it may effect the software warranty. PAMG should be along to answer this soon. :)

anyone else getting an "communications with phone unexepectedly interrupted" error?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭floggg

anyone else getting an "communications with phone unexepectedly interrupted" error?

Yes, I did, but I still got into the recovery menu thing when the phone restarted and I think I did a nandroid back up.

Should I be worried that the back up left me with exactly 0 memory on my memory card? Like perhaps it ran out of space half way through and thus the backup its useless? Do I need that backup for any particular reason?

I'm also not sure if my phone is rooted our not. It seems no different, but I guess it wouldn't until I try and do something special with it.

Lastly, assuming I am rooted, anybody got a step by step guide on how to gain super user access and enable market access?

I have the file I need for super user access, but the page I got it from says I need to "flash" it. Not fully sure how to do that.

From there, what do I need to do to install market access.

Sorry, normally not this slow with computers, but very nervous and confused about this linux/ android stuff. Don't want to brick my expensive phone!

Yes, I couldn't get it going at all with Windows 7 x64.

I changed to a Windows XP laptop and installed HTC Sync then uninstalled it and left the driver and it worked fine.

You will know if it was rooted by going to into Menu and you should see a Superuser Ninja icon if rooted correctly.

Sorry for not answering your questions sooner. Have had a crazy past two days.

So, i'm guessing that you've finally rooted the phone?

Anyway as for warranty, the way it stands is that rooting invalidates your software warranty. I.e. HTC Will not support you with software bugs. The hardware warranty remains intact but is invalidated if the hardware malfunctions as a result of rooting.

Take this for example, if you root your phone and due to a manufacturing defect the phone's screen stops working. The warranty remains valid.

And this as another example, you root your phone and experiment with overclocking the CPU and end up frying your phone. If HTC find out that you were attempting to overclock your phone then your warranty is null and void.

Anyone else have any questions? Anything I missed?
