Sitting there watching TV and the PIR halogens come on in the garden, went to invistagate and low a behold there is chinese lantern lying on the bone dry decking, smoldering away. Left a bit of a scorch mark on the decking. Could have being worse if I didn't go and check why the lights came on.
Just thinking if it had landed on the parasol I would be dealing with a fire right now.
These f***ing things are dangerous in my opinion and should be banned. Where do people get these fecking things, made of wire and crepe paper.

Whats everyone else opinion on these things

If theres a problem with them, dont use them. You bought them , and knew they were made from wire and crepe paper at the tiime. We live in enough of a nanny state already wihtout the government banning anything that could be remotely hazardous.

Be careful. I've heard of people who got abducted by them and had strange things put up their bums.

They're essentially hot air balloons without guidance though. People just light the candle and let them off, possibly landing on something flammable. I doubt that the OP tried to set fire to his own house.

He didn't buy them-they landed in his garden, on his decking, just missing his parasol.

I think he's just bragging about having a parasol and decking tbh:pac:

You just know some "journalist" from the Daily Mail is reading this thread and planning an article on the threat of chinese lanterns in urban areas. Expect a petition to be up in a week

Was lighting a few chinese lanterns and enjoying the warm glow as they drifted off into the air.

One landed in the neighbours and the PIR lights came on.

Apparently it landed on a highly combustable saw dust dry decking.

    Decking should be banned.

Worse still it might have landed on the parasol and I would have lost the lantern entirely.

No it was not, I couldn't be arsed with messing around with there things. A besides I would have a concience where the could land a what possible damage they could cause.

There were tons of those lanterns getting lit at Glastonbury this year. Loads of them (when coming back down) were landing in trees and still lightting. The fire marshalls had a few busy nights with them

No I am not bragging, And for your info alwaysadub I did not say it just missed the parasol, go back and read the first post, I said what if it landed on the parasol.

As for bragging I can control the lights by remote control :P

I have two in the apartment here but like the OP don't consider using them in a built-up area a wise decision. They'll be used when I head back to the folks place or when the occasion/location calls for it.

remote controls are over-rated.. much more fun to get the kids to run round turning lights on and off

and so many more TV stations now it's not just 6..

takes ages and they get so fed up it makes me laugh when they say can i get up now please.. my knees are bruised.. pleasse

I agree those lanterns shouldn't be used in built up area's,they should be used in the country side where the only hazard would be if they landed in a forest or a farmers barn with his stash of hay,or perhaps his wheat field. Yes, don't use them in a city built of concrete, the chances of them landing on decking is huge.

Good point dubtom more reason for them to be banned

Seriously, think about it, these things could cause a some serious damage if not death.

I am not racist, as suggested.
I did not light the lantern, as suggested.
I am not bragging, I have nothing more than anybody else.
I seriously believe these things are dangerous, in both built up areas and other areas as pointed out by dubtom

Loads of sarcasic replys but what if it happened to you, and your decking was damaged, would you not think of, what if ???

Proper order, much more fun setting them airborne somewhere rural where they can later descend and set a haystack alight or create a gorse fire on some hillside. Better still head down to a beach and see if someone mistakes it for a distress flare at sea and phones the coastguard.

Your posts sound like that of one written by one of his regular listeners/contributers.

Having said that, I'd probably be a bit miffed about it, if it happened to me.
