Take on the Takeaway RTE 1

Does anyone else think this show is missing the point?
The concept that you can cook healthier food quicker than ordering takeaway is a good one but I would imagine most people order takeaway because they can't be a*sed cooking and have nothing in the house. Having to go shopping for the ingredients and cooking it up yourself, while healthier and possibly cheaper, in my view defeats the purpose of getting takeaway.

it's a cooking show. what else are RTE going to show? seems to be all they have on lately.

i agree that it is cheaper and faster to cook healthier food but sometimes i'm too fúcking lazy to do it or forgot to buy ingredients. it's nice to have a takeout every now and again.

This show isn't even an original concept. It was on a British channel years ago.

I thought it was good but two things annoyed me. 1) The fake italian accent 2) They gave away too much about next weeks episode.

Prime Time television viewing. What a load of s&&te.

    A snip for €160 license fee :(

Another RTE programme with the sanctimonious, D4 liberal, holier than thou, elitist, do-the-right-thing message.

Perfectly complimented by the nanny state 'SafeFood' ad bumpers.

Telling us what to eat and how to live. And seeking a licence fee for the privilege.

    They can fcuk right off.

*takes sip of whiskey and calms down.

My twenty stone father certainly wont be switching to healthy food because it can be cooked just as quick, concept is way too old at this stage and simply is;nt that effective i would imagine. The ingredients are more expensive than a snackbox and you dont need to wash up afterwards :D

Whatever about the show the website is for it is handy.

What annoyed me about it was the voiceover person letting us what is coming up at the beginning, at the end of part one and at the beginning of part two. It is only half an hour, is the audience that forget full? But this annoys me about most of these types of TV shows.

Watching this show for the first time tonight.. Really dont understand what they are trying to prove or disprove, or even what they are trying to test... Very loose concept.

"Paul has bought the ingredients for more than it would cost for a takeaway" Okay, so are they gonna have a professional chef on call (for free) every night of the week to cook for them. Plus they dont take into account the lighting heating involved in the cooking of the meal, or the cost of travelling to and from the supermarket.... And as was said above, the whole idea about a takeaway is that you dont have to cook & cleanup at home yourself..

They need to do a show that speed up the washing up, the cooking part is fine, it's the fun part. It's the washing up that kills the mood.

Yes but the producers/creators of the show are Irish.
Madam, – Your TV review of our production Take On the Take Away for RTÉ television (Weekend Review, July 17th) stated, “this looks inspired by a BBC series of the same name”.

Far from copying the BBC version of T ake On the Take Away, we produced that series too. Our business model is based on creating original formats that have international sales potential. Most of our shows, like The Restaurant , begin life in Ireland, and then travel. However, Take On the Take Away was picked up by the BBC first and then went on to become a daily show in Germany for two years.

We try to champion originality in an Irish television environment where the pressure is on broadcasters to do copycat shows. The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland appears to have no remit for making Ireland an exporter of new ideas, the Film Board only knocked on our door when it was about to get the snip, and only for Enterprise Ireland we would have nobody to talk to. – Yours, etc,

    PHILIP KAMPFF,

    Vision Independent Productions

IMO the show isn't really for either the BBC or RTÉ in terms of public service broadcasting, hence why the BAI may not have been interested initially. And the IFB???? I don't think reality TV formats are really their remit. Enterprise Ireland is an interesting source.

    Well done?!

It's baffling. Can a professional, celebrity chef make nicer food than a bog standard take-away? Oh god, the tension is too much, who could possibly win?:eek::confused:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

All the posts I've seen from you, Elmo, and I didnt realise you were female. Would you like to come out for a take-away some night, or maybe if you dont like that I could get a professional chef to come to the house and cook us up something (costing less, and possibly being more healthy in the process)?

I think I saw that guy Stephen McAllister's name on the credits as being responsible for the concept. He's the chef on next week's show.... the promo for which I'm sure (unless my ears are failing me) had the opposing takeaway staff saying "we're still the best takeaway in Wexford".. which leads me to believe that they lose next week's cook-off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭podgemonster

The concept is pointless, last nights household had a chef living in it he was too tired from looking at food to cook when he came home.

Enter celebrity chef who is under sever pressure time wise, is practically sweating by the time he is finished. He used almost every utensil in the kitchen which will have to be cleaned, and the it barley tasted better than the takeaway and slightly cheaper.

Also the presenter, where the hell is she from he voice is soo irritating. Plus shes a nutritionist, a title any joe soap can give each other. Eat more fruit and veg will be her message in every show.

I was amazed that Paul Rankin bought "pre-prepared rice" and also used the "stir fry sauce" from the box.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,386 ✭✭✭monkeypants

Great idea. Next time I'm back from a long day up the mountains or whatever and I'm too tired to cook, I'll just call Paul Rankin and get him to come round and cook for me.

    What a load of arsebiscuits!

Still waiting for "Celebrities on the Toilet."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,313 ✭✭✭✭Sam Kade

I watched this last night. Your wan delivering the take away  She gets into her van it won't start. Then she doesn't know where she is going and has to go back and ask. The take away must have some business going if they have more than one delivery driver as the couple spend €60-€100/ week on take ways from the same take away. My guess is that it's RTE's lame way of trying to hype up the program  Also why did your mans wife/partner or whatever she was give the chef 1 point less even though she said his meal tasted better?

I am highly insulted! But it gives me the opportunity to post the most cringe-worthy bit of Irish TV of the last Decade. The reason I pay my TV Licence.

I quite enjoyed the show last night. I think the concept is quite a good one. I often opt for a takeaway cos I presume it's the handy option, but the reality is that by the time I order it, drive in to get it (too cheap to pay delivery cost!) and drive home, I probably would have cooked something nicer and cheaper myself. Also, most of the ingrediants he used last night were already in the house and the stuff he bought (bar the beef) could be kept and wouldn't go off.

A bit off topic, but the state of those two on it last night. Imagine admitting you spend €60+ on takeaway every week and would you really let cameras into your house without scrubbing your kitchen! It was manky! Some people have no shame .

I was surprised also that Paul used pre-boiled rice and that stir fry sauce from a box!

Are they going to do an episode where someone orders a garlic and cheese fries and a snackbox from Supermacs?

I'd love to see a chef attempt that one without feeling like he's sold his soul.

I think this was to make the recipe a bit easier to make an I suppose, a more realistic alternative to the takeaway. I guess they felt that if they had him making everything from scratch, there was no way the couple would cook it instead of getting a takeaway. Though it was a bit daft as the rice would be the easiest thing to cook and was probably one of the most expensive things he bought .

Are you saying that it is easier and cheaper to have pre-boiled rice? Rice is easy to boil if you can't do that you should pick up the phone.

people aren't learning from this show, that when you buy large amounts of food it will last you allot longer and be cheaper.

For example in the 1st episode the chef bought 3 potatoes when in reality a sack of potatoes would be bought and in the long term save the consumer even more money. (Tip: Always buy dirty potatoes they last longer and keep them in a brown paper bag). Again they didn't mention that the frozen peas used in the first episode would also be used again since there were plenty left over.

And in terms of the pre-boiled rice you are spending more money on less just for convenience, Isn't the point of the show to should how inconvenient and expensive pre-prepared food is?

You don't even have to boil rice. If you can use a measuring jug you can cook it in the microwave. I learned to do it like that when one of my dogs was sick but it tastes just as good as boiled rice as long as you have measured the water properly.

its rte a irish channel and they're shopping in sainsbury in newry on tonights show!

    What cheek!

This is a god awful show, how this ever even got printed off someone's computer to pitch to someone in RTE is beyond me. Like I said already on this thread, The whole premise for the show is completely flawed... what exactly is the show meant to be proving?... if you hire a professional chef and get them to cook in your house, it might be nicer than getting a takeaway...

the presenter is an nutritionist and she never heard of cous cous!
oh my god, how did she ever qualify from her course and how did she get near a national tv show. crikey and her voice is so irritating.

Your right RTÉ is an Irish channel. Head of TV is from Northern Ireland and as is the DG of RTÉ. Both from opposite ends of the political divide. Next you be telling UTV and BBC NI not to involve anyone from the South.
This is a god awful show, how this ever even got printed off someone's computer to pitch to someone in RTE is beyond me.

Possibly because it got passed someone from the BBC first. Can you believe the cheek of the BBC employing an Irish TV company to produce a UK TV series. You would think the BBC do not broadcast into Ireland.

They do and they have. Ballykissangel and George Gentle while both are network TV shows both are commissioned by BBC NI, and both are bigger than a one of the worst TV reality shows ever made. And they have done some filming for some lifestyle/factual shows in the south for local TV.

Perhaps RTÉ shouldn't broadcast any of the NI county GAA teams when played in the 6 counties, or Ulster Rugby Matches.

I wondered that too, this is an RTE production not a joint production and funded by the Irish TV licence and its filmed in a different jurisdiction surely they should of filmed it in the republic we are short of Irish TV shows. If this was made by a production company I wouldn't care but it's RTE. You don't see the BBC filming home grown TV in the republic of Ireland, the GBP wouldn't stand for it

That's a lie I have already pointed out 3 major dramas produced by the BBC in Ireland, I will add Murphy's Law to the list of dramas produced by the BBC in the republic of Ireland.

Yes the same company that made the UK version of the show for the BBC.
