I started doing this for the Boards.ie Folding team recently, having been doing it before for another site that I dont use so much these days
this thread will explain more about Folding, but basically its protein research using the spare capacity of many peoples PCs.

    http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=39432
shows only 151 people on the Boards.ie team, and only 64 CPUs active within the last 50 days

    So come on folks!

    </ends serious face>

I honestly though this was about folding paper! LOL :D

I was thinking to myself "what the hell has protein research got to do with folding paper!"
    Stupid me!

Is it only women allowed on the folding team?

Is there a separate league table for ironing?

I never realized it was so competitive!

PS3 does this. and with a nice soothing musical accompaniment including a fancy map of the world with localised headlines. PS3 ftw!

Check out the good-looking blonde on the right! I'd like to fold *her* paper ...... if you know mean.

(by which I mean I'd like to a big open-air location somewhere and fold a giant sheet of paper with her)

    Folding is wimmins work.

They should have given it a better name, you'd get way more support from people if you called it "RaptorCom" or "ProjectAwesome" or something like that...
Even calling it "PenguinTech" would probably get a few to download out of curiosity.

Or disguise it as a porn link..

    Brains melted due to work.

Kindly explain it in laymans terms as I'm tired.

They have to run computer simulations of how proteins fold. If proteins f**k up and misfold it causes diseases. So instead of having a big computer do all the simulations, they split the workload up into small 'workunits'. People download a workunit, their home computer/ps3 crunches the data and sends the results back. So its faster because they have lots of people globally doing this. Tis called 'distributed computing' :)

    Watch your ESB bill skyrocket!

For using 10% of my CPU processing power? I think that might equate to an extra 50 cents - 1 euro a month, yeah

Seriously, (I know this kind of goes against the grain here in AH, but it seemed like the best place to get more people's attention), it won't cost you a cent, and it might do us some good one day.

You know it's against the rules to post in AH just to preach to a wider audience, right?

It uses up all available cycles on your CPU. So your CPU cores are going at 100% all the time. I ran this for a month a few years back and got a shock at the electricity bill.

I'm sure if the mods have a problem with it they'll let me know. Thanks anyway.

No, you can choose the amount of CPU cycles it will use, I currenntly have mine set to use 75 % of CPU. And AFAIK it will make NO difference to your electricity bill

What? Drawing more power to supply the CPU for hours on end will make no difference to your electricity bill? Eh?

theres a slider to adjust how much CPU usage you assign to it.

BTW, this doesnt really belong in AH :)

I know AH isn't the typical place for this, I just thought I'd bring it to a wider audience.

You don't have to run your PC 24/7 for this, just when you have it on anyway, browsing boards or whatever
