What is your favourite tool?

I am just curious as to what your favourite tool is, most men I know will have a tool box and in it lurking is always some odd shaped hammer or screw driver, or adjustable spanner and despite the heap of other 'sets' of tools this one seems to be the one that gets constantly used.

So that is the tool you use the most about the house or anywhere else that you'd be pissed if it went missing and where did you get it from and why that one?

Thats a good question. I guess the man in your life has a birthday coming up and you want to get him something to tighten his nuts with, or screw something really tight:D.

Personally my favourite tool is this ratchet that I got in McQuillans tools in the Blanchardstown Center, next to Next.

It came with an assortment of heads that can fit most nuts, and an assortment of screw heads that can fit most screws, flathead, philips head etc.

It can loosen and tighten the above fixings at odd angles, working on a hard to reach motor part etc.

It was relatively cheap @ about €10.

    So there ya go.

You know you're a true mans man when located in your shed is a stick that is used exclusively for the purpose of stirring paint.

    Too true.

I used to have a lovely rock when during the last recession to hammer in nails.

    Seriously.

Oh yes. That is also useful. Sometimes the most primitive tools are the most useful.

Not a single tool, per se, but my socket set is what I use and love the most. It has 1/4" sockets from 4 to 13mm and 1/2" sockets from 10 to 32mm, plus all the associated bits and bobs to go with them.

I also have a lump hammer that I love. :D And a pick axe. :pac: And precision screwdrivers. And a soldering iron.

    Gee, they're like my kids: I can't choose a favourite. :D

    And an adjustable spanner.

    And a vice-grip...

    My bowl gouge - most versatile tool for wood turning ever. Cuts through most wood fairly easily and great for hollowing. When you get used to it wood will just stream off in a continuous flow in wispy lil bits, magical. It's about 3 feet long and the edge is similar to this;

    Type-UGouges.jpg

Can use it for almost anything, from roughing cuts to nice finishing cuts. Versatile so so versatile. I <3 my bowl gouge

I have a coal chisel I've found multiple uses for. Handy things those coal chisels. My father keeps trying to rob it because it's better than his own:pac::mad:

I also have a hammer drill with a most impressive set of bits that I quite like aswell:p.

And of course the wee Philips screwdriver is always useful.

I keep a mini-Leatherman in the car aswell just in case.

    Yes, I like tools really:P

Wouldn't even know where to begin. I love all my DeWalt stuff, but the tools I love the most would be my butane powered soldering iron - beats the pants off my old antex iron - and the painting gear I use. The turbine I have is whisper quiet and way more powerful than others on the market, and my spray guns even though they cost a fortune are a joy to work with. Never had a single issue with them. Love stripping them down each week and cleaning them - feels like taking machine guns apart.

Other than that, my King Tony socket and spanner set all 200 odd pieces of it. Great life-long tools!

    old-hand-drill-small.jpg

Nothing like a good old-fashioned hand-drill, although the one in the picture is a bit too old-fashioned. My dad has one that he used to use back in the day and if I was doing work around the house I'd use it instead of a power drill.

It's an absolute beast of a thing. Took me by surprise first time I used it. Proper, proper drill that would have no bother firing in a screw. Not sure if you can get them now. The one we have is over 20 years old but is still in tip top shape

in fairness, theres nothing that cant be fixed, at least temporarily, with a leatherman. Bring some tape and some WD-40 as backup and your sorted

They are the greatest tools in the world. im busily trying to invent a leatherman with the WD-40 and a tape dispenser, but it just doesnt seem to work

Also a little surprised that no-one has said their hands!

Gotta be my leatherman. If carried around I will use it every day. And the wire cutters on it is the best I've used.

I will always have one of these

I'd say my dremel would be up there. Chisels and the like too. Actually I'd say my fave is a set of pencils and a notepad of good quality paper. Anything I end up making starts off there as a pretty fleshed out idea.

Big Stchick (spelt in culche talk). It's around 2.5m long, straight and handy for any number of tasks be it hanging mirrors or writing on :)

Next to that I have a nice screw driver set. Almost prefer it to my cordless drill.

Maybe not best, but top 3 anyway.

But definatly not one of my FAVOURITE tools.

last night hammer/knife/pliers was used to help prepare dinner. With delicious results

    Geek answer: My brain!

Another Vote for a leatherman. I had a great one but it gone run over by an anti-aircraft gun(Dont ask). Now I have a swiss army knife that gets used about 5 times a day, though I do miss the wire cutters from the leatherman. That skeletool looks fantastic!

Also love my cordless drill/cordless screw driver - especially the keyless chuck. Chuck key? Whats a chuck key?

Power driver, also doubles as a powered allen key, perfect for speedy flat pack assembly. If only I could remember where I left the charger for it, or pretty soon it will just be a driver, and I've loads of those...
