I have started thinking over my protein intake and am thinking I may be pi$$in away money but taking more protein than I need... Currently im 80kgs , put on 5kgs this year with little or no increase to body fat , all lifts are up , cycling 150kms a week , running close to 25 miles I had been taking USN 100% whey 3 shakes a day but changed to 2 (1 morning before cycle to work 1 before gym) and introduced USN Anabolic Mass builder after the gym But now im thinking I take too much protien and excess just gets pi$$ed out so its awaste of cash Heres a daily break down 1 scoop 100%whey 34g 1 cup of oats ??? No idea how much is in them Lunch - chicken salad with some tuna or fillet or salom or beef 1 scoop 100%whey 34g 1 slice of mccambridge peanut butter honey Gym 2 scoops of USN Anabolic Mass builder 50g protein Dinner - something meaty fish chicken red meat Im thinking of dropping the before gym shake....In terms of gains I'd like to at most hit 85kgs , and running aim this year is 3:2x marathon Any thoughts ???

there is zero evidence to show protein drink are any more effective than real food and IMO doing all that running and cycling is just going to make it very tough to put on another 5kg.

The shakes are very convenient but i still use them daily for that reason.

This article might help also - Maximum muscle

    http://thetransformationcatalyst.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/maximum-muscle-%e2%80%93-the-new-rules-for-gaining-lean-rock-hard-muscle/

I would run the marathon at your lightest weight not heavier. I went down to 77-78kg for marathon (3hrs 11mins) but back up to 89-90kg where i feel and look my best

I'm in the process of phasing out protein shakes myself. I think a lot of people are under the the illusion that protein shakes are the be all and end all when it comes to muscle gains.

As pointed out by Transform, convenience is the only real advantage they hold over real food.
I once saw a guy use 4 scoops of protein in his post workout shake! 120 - 130g of protein in one shake?? Madness! I bet his local supplement store love him.

I much rather get my post workout nutrition from some scrambed eggs and oatcakes or late night fix from cottage cheese. At least then I'll actually feel like I've ate something.

agreed and not to mention the ease at which it is to overdo the protein and under do veg and fruit (acid base balance gets thrown out the window)

I'm pretty sure excess protein will be used as energy rather than pissed out.

yes sorted as fat as extra calories are still extra calories (the conversion is a little harder than if it was carbs i grant you that)

Most people i deal with need to focus on the quality of the food they eat FIRST and suppplments second. Its like the guy i had last week wanting to know every single supplement i took because THAT was the reason i am in great shape - in my mind i am thinking have you any idea how hard and consistent i train.

I do not think they are a wast of money just convenient

Not necessarily. The body will only use protein as a source of energy as a last resort when there is a depletion of it's normal energy sources. (i.e low calorie diets)
Lets be honest, if your body is using protein for energy there is something seriously wrong with your diet to begin with.

If that's the case, revert to Tranform's post about quality of the food.

I don't believe the body will only use protein as energy as a last resort, it will use any excess calories as energy or store them as fat regardless of the source. Also on atkins or paleo or any other low carb diet you'll end up using some protein as energy. I realise its not that important to the debate but it annoys me when people say any more than X amount of protein and you'll piss it out or variants on that theme. Its not strictly true, plus if someone like the OP doesn't take account of excess protein being used as energy they might find themselves gaining weight unnecessarily or inexplicitly.

Plus at 80kg it isn't really hard to reach your daily protein needs through 'real' food...commonly regarded as 1g per lb of lean bodyweight, or if you read the other thread may even be a lot less.

I thought too much protein (example above 4 scoops of whey in a drink and knock it back) in too short a time gave you diarrhea?

Apart from convenience protein shakes do allow you to add or redue calories/protein quite easily i.e. move from one scoop to two or two shakes to three a day

    Stopped reading that days ago

    1. Skinny guys just do not eat enough period - protein, carbs. fats EVERYTHING

    2. Overweight guys eat too much and rarely focus on quality of foods.

    3. Those in the middle are just not consistent enough

no i just mean those in the middle (not too fat and not in great shape either) are just not consistent enough to actually get to looking in great shape.

Those at the other ends are just all over the shop about their diet and not honest enough

coulda been mass gainer. My housemate has this giant tub of it, yet he only ever took one tiny scoop after the gym. Turns out that one scoop is actually only quarter of a serving and less then 15g protein..the serving size is 5 scoops, 56g protein, and a whopping 1,050 calories!

as regards too much protein...it should be obvious. obvious in the sense that yes if you're going to the gym regularly and training hard, your body needs all that protein, and it's not a waste. if you were only sporadically going to the gym and taking huge amounts of protein daily... that would be a waste. try mixing it with other foodstuff as snacks. i mix a scoop of whey with natural yogurt and granola for snacks. taking shakes is boring and usually not overly interesting.
