Dumb about Dumbbells

    Hi folks.

A friend has offered me his set of dumbbells (he's moving abroad), and given my desire to finally do something about my weight, I'm taking him up on the offer.

They're a set of York weights, pretty similar to these although he says he has extra plates which bring them up to the 40Kg mark.

Anyway, I'm trying to lose fat. I'm pretty happy with my diet (thanks to the advice I was given over at the Nutrition and Diet forum), and I've already lost a few pounds sticking to this over the last couple of weeks.

I'll be doing cardio (probably swimming or cycling) three mornings a week. On a couple of the non-cardio days, I want to add some weight training, but I'm a complete noob to all this. So with that in mind, can I get recommendations for reading material, online tutorials etc etc? Are there any recommended programs for dumbbells as opposed to barbells? Basically, I'm looking for any respected sources of info and tuition when it comes to dumbbell training. Any advice in general? It would be much appreciated :)

    Fair play for getting started.

My advice would be to get at least one session with a personal trainer to show you technique and a programme. D/B's are quite advanced and beginners would not normally go straight into a db prog straight away.

You got the Wts for free so 50-100 euro on a trainer will help you get the best results.

    Best of luck

Thanks Davestator, that makes sense (although I'll have to do some research on PTs first). Forgot to ask in my OP, but would I be best advised getting a bench or anthing like that?
