(Why) Are girls more likely to believe in the supernatural?

So a couple of weeks ago there I was sitting having a few drinks with a few of my friends. There was 11 of us, it was towards the end of the night so, as you do, we were into the deep meaningful conversation zone.

Anyways it came around to the topic of psychics/mediums, as three of the girls were going to see one on the following Saturday. From that revelation we got talking about the after life, ghosts, astrology, crystal healing, homeopathy etc.

Out of the 6 girls there most of them believed there was something to most of the things that came up. Only one of the fellas thought there was something to one or two of them and most of the fellas thought the rest of the things discussed were bullsh1t.

Now in a once off situation you could just say it was a random group of people and it was just a coincidence that the girls there happened to be people more likely to believe in that kind of thing. But I have noticed this to be a consistant trend throughout my life. Females being far far more likely to believe in the supernatural than males are.

So I was just wondering, first, do you think that is accurate, and secondly why do you think that is?

    (obligatory poll to follow)

Are females more likely to believe in the supernatural? 134 votes

    I'm a female: Yes
    0% 0 votes
    I'm a female: No
    14% 19 votes
    I'm a male: Yes
    16% 22 votes
    I'm a male: No
    69% 93 votes

For centuries women have been kept in line, and prevented from pandering and wasting money on psychic mediums with one simple command. Get back in the kitchen.

I hate even using the term, but women love to say they are more "spiritual"

When I shared a flat in college every time a floor board creaked one of the girls would start on about ghosts and crap. Me, I'd say contraction in the wood at night as the temperature falls, but I'm just not opening my mind to other idea's....

Because anything that bleeds for seven days without dying will believe they are supernatural.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Many wimmen I've talked to who believe in the this hocus pocus find that people with logical and rational answers are "just ignorant to what's out there". Those types seem to grasp the idea that if there isn't an easy explanation then it's ghosts.

Ooooooh, spooky 2x4 plywood creaking at night!! It's probably somebody's great grandmother reincarnated.

The first mistake you've made OP is posting it on boards because we all know there aren't any girls on the internet.

That's preposterous OP. Don't you know that EXACTLY 50 per cent of those who believes in the supernatural are men and EXACTLY 50 per cent are women?

    And I mean EXACTLY.

MEN AND WOMEN ARE EXACTLY EQUAL. THERE ARE NO DIFFERENCES WHATSOEVER AS FAR AS THEIR BEHAVIOUR OR MINDS ARE CONCERNED.

THE EVOLUTIONARY PRESSURES WHICH ACTED ON EACH SEX WERE EXACTLY THE SAME, REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT THEIR RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PROCESS OF REPRODUCTION AND THEIR RELATIVE SHARE OF PARENTAL INVESTMENT IN THEIR OFFSPRING WERE AND ARE ABSOLUTELY UNEQUAL.

    WE ARE ALL THE SAME

WOMEN ARE EXACTLY EQUAL ON AVERAGE TO MEN WITH REGARD TO INTELLIGENCE AND CAPACITY FOR LOGICAL AND ABSTRACT REASONING

    /extreme sarcasm

I think this is true. I work with a gang of women who talk a pile of mad stuff. Honest to fcuk...shÍt they come out with...like they say, if you keep saying out loud what you want the universe sees that you get it. She says she gets this idea from a book called The Secret. When you're listening to it day in, day out, it starts to sink in.:(
In saying that, when anyone starts a conversation about oujja boards or angels, I'm all ears.:o
My hubbie doesn't believe in spiritual stuff at all, yet I'm fascinated by mediums.

I have heard about that book - by a former scientologist who also produced trash tv in australia along the lines of ghosts and seria murderers type ****e. Then she wrote a book with a person who believes they are in CONSTANT communication with a single dead person. This 'medium' then asked for more of a cut and so was written out of the book and the movie.

The author is also currently counter suing people who worked on promotion and on the movie of the book as they claimed she refused to give them a contract as that would not be in line with the spiritual sense of the book - she then conveniently refused to pay them so the 'no-contract' rule seems to have worked out well for her. Anyone believing that book needs their head examined. I really think people like that author and psychic hotline types are preying on the psychologically & emotionally (and intellectually hehe) vulnerable, in a not so harmless kind of way.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

First of all many of those that you think are preying on the psychologically & emotionally actually believe what they're writing and saying.

Secondly, if these types are preying on preying on the psychologically & emotionally vulnerable so are the catholic church and various other organised religions. The difference is that they got there first.

A free market is supposed to be good!

Because girls are less intelligent than boys. That's a fact, not opinion. I read it in a book once.

Edit: Yeah so I also misread the poll question. It changed as if by magic. Clearly supernatural forces at work. The amount of people voting yes is less terrifying now.

Women are more likely to believe in angels and alternative medicine whilst men are more likely to believe in alien abductions and conspiracy theories. The illogical people of each gender just focus on different aspects of the ridiculous, thats all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

Not into all that supernatural malarky ,but I do like a tv program called supernatural .

Does that make me a woman ? ,I'm suppose to be a man:(

Angels and alt-med are total bull****. Now aliens most likely do exist, they aren't abducting people though (see Steven Hawkings take on the odds of alien life) and if you don't think giving people power over money in vast quantities causes many to conspire, I have a bridge to sell you, an angel made it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,733 ✭✭✭jam_mac_jam

i am female and dont believe in any of that bull****, however I do agree they are more into it. Can you imagine a group of guys sitting around talking about Angels? it seems perfectly acceptable to talk this nonsence. I have no idea why its women more than men though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,941 ✭✭✭caseyann

Lets think fluffy fairy after lives, what you expect women to believe in when men all grow up with guns and bombs and swords.Kill kill, physical, and women have to nurture and pick up the pieces after wards.women save save.:p

Or perhaps women believe in angels because we are angels:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,068 ✭✭✭Bodhisopha

Women have been led to believe they are the majority shareholders in intuition, hence women's intuition. Rather than accept that there is nothing to be intuitive about 99% of the time they still feel compelled to express this "intuition" by bending your ear with the most painful nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Another thing about this softer side to women which leads to them be more "spiritual" and less cut n dried and cynical as men, is that when they're on the market, they accept their fair share of baldies, fatties, etc. Its more about the personality and "the eyes" :D

    Im glad women are women!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

I know a girl that 100% believes that humans have never ventured outside earth's atmosphere, and she knows they haven't because the radiation out there would kill them. I've tried finding her reasons for believing this, but she gets vague and defensive.

Oh, she also thinks theres a 50/50 chance that a group of aliens landed thousands of years ago, and left discs scribed with alien language which were found by one man, photographed with descriptions that didn't match, and never seen again. I told her that the guy probably made it up for a laugh, she wasn't too happy.

/I suppose that isn't really supernatural... Just dumb as fcuk

Because there's nothing supernatural about god of course

EDIT: I just checked conservapedia! Here's their helpful take on it
Many liberals think that God is supernatural, but the truth of His existence makes Him metaphysical rather than supernatural.

Well that's ok then... He's not supernatural because he actually exists
