More a debate than a question, say your on two shakes a day, 2 scoops in each shake, would it be more beneficial both metabolically and financially i guess to take four shakes a day with only one scoop in each shake??

I think so. Too much protein at once just gets turned into expensive glucose.

    Don't over think it.

Build a good basic diet and use protein powders where you feel they're useful and make it easier to stick to, for example:

Breakfast - eggs, toast, tomatoes etc.
    Snack - protein powder, fruit
    Lunch - chicken breast, salad
    Snack - as before
Post-Workout - definately a protein shake, banana, maybe a post workout blend if you've got more cash (e.g. Pro-Recover's about the most popular, at least in the UK, however I'm sure there's a wide selection in Ireland and maybe some others that may be as well proven)
Dinner - decent meal. Steak, veg :)

    Hope that helps!

    Can you explain this?
I don't see how it's biochemically possible to break the peptide bonds in a protein, thereby releasing amino acids, and for these amino acids to somehow form the monosaccharide glucose.

    Can you enlighten me Eileen?

exactly what i was thinking... amino acids are completely unrelated to sugars.

Google gluconeogenesis, the generation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources. Like amino acids.

It's generally not an issue with whole food, like a big steak for instance, as the fat present will slow the digestion of the protein to a rate that the body can cope with. But whey gives the body a large amount of digestible protein all at once.

A couple of people over in the Nutrition forum have found that their blood sugar goes way up after a whey only shake.

    hmmmm.

    interesting.
its all coming back to me now.
3rd and 4th year biochemistry stuff has pretty much left my head and in its place is the LC biology and chemistry courses I teach!

According to that, 13 of the 20 common amino acids can be turned back into glucose but this process occurs only during periods of fasting, starvation, low-carbohydrate diets, or intense exercise.

    Yes, hello.
    How are you?
I didnt question it, that was a line directly from the article on gluconeogensis.
    what exactly is the issue?
