Why,just why?Especially Irish teenagers and students?
If anything pisses me off or any intelligent Irish person it is Irish people who use stupid American slang.

Anyway back to the point,where/when/how and WHY the F**K did people start using these words.

Anytime someone uses those words a baby dies.

    Stupid Yanks and their 4chan.

I like 'Facepalm', it conveys a strong emotion with great precision.

Fail, epic, win, and all the rest is rubbish though.

It's a show of how many internet points you have gained over your online life. The more meme's you can quote the larger your e-dick.

They really have little to be worried about.

The word "pwned", apparently a varient of the almost equally annoying "owned", has always bemused me. My first encounter with this word occured when I noticed that you can read the replies to your comments on Youtube. I had criticised the lyrics of a particularly inarticulate rap star, which annoyed one of his loyal fans. His reply detailed the sexual relations which he and my mother had engaged in, and ended with a declaration of the word "pwned". I felt duely deflated.

I used "epic" before it was cool. Seriously. Not to excess, but where acceptable, and in full sentences. Then everybody started using it, so I couldn't, or I'd sound like a muppet. ****ing teenagers, get your own ****ing slang!

Now, I say "serendipidous." If that becomes popular in five year's time I swear there'll be a gun rampage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭Tordelback

You might have better luck with 'serendipitous'.

I think owned became pwned because "o" is beside "p" on most keyboards ;)

you do know that you don't have to be an American or in the US to access a US website don't you?

that's what makes the internet so wonderful, no border control.

    +1

And the same with the pathetic "txt-spk" and Americanised phrasing (the irritating "so, like, whatever") and black rap homie phrasing.

You really have no idea how 4chan works, do you?

It's based on user contributions, from people all over the world. Saying that everything posted on 4chan is "american" is like saying everything posted on wikipedia is american (even though most wikipedia users are not american-which is why some americans use conservapedia :D instead).

I remember having a discussion about the LC irish oral exam on 4chan. But no, you're right! Because the owner of the site is american, somehow our discussion became "american".

    No.

The word "epic" (how we use it now) orignially comes from games, an epic piece of gear would drop and people would say "oooh, epic". "teh" "pwned" etc etc are mispellings of other words, which is common when typing.

These words were not sourced form a country, but the internet which has the world to tank for, not one country.
