much of a muchness im afraid , once a reciever is appointed , its usually curtains .The bank is uninterested in running hotels , and this country is hardly teeming with moneyed investor types anymore.

Its the largest hotel in Europe. Nearly 1800 bedrooms and the convention centre too.

I'm particularly devastated for the extremely attractive girl who was working in the bar the last time I was there.

I hope she won't have to move into the illegal masseuse business or anything.

In an industrial estate in west Dublin? There is the problem right there...

You haven't been there before obviously.

It's about a mile away from the industrial estate. Hope it stays as a hotel as the grounds and surrounds are really nice.

so what are the chances it will mysteriously burn down in the next couple of weeks then?

Depends on whether Albert Reynolds is an investor I guess :D

And Jim Mansfield said on Sunday a few Americans were interested in buying the Mansfield Group for a billion....

Well possibly, it's not always the story though. The bank want their money, that's about it. They're not going to get any return by holding and closing it nor will they by not selling it

Their new conference / events centre is getting a lot of business that the RDS would normally have hosted (e.g. Top Gear). Far better venue IMO, more accesible, just off the motorway, accommodation et al one one site, etc. I'm no Mansfield fan but I wouldn't like to see it go under.

Another thing: any (and most) business' in today's climate can be under financial pressure but can survive the bad times through various forms of juggling. This type of news makes all their creditors call in their debts at once which can, and in many cases does, lead to a company actually going under.

It's in Saggart actually, right outside the Industrial Estate.

    Where is jeopardy

Just went onto their website there out of interest, and for a bog standard room tomorrow night it'd cost me 88 euro. What do they expect with prices like that during a recession for a place not even bang in the middle of the city centre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭Svetti Arss

Just because its on Wikipedia as the biggest hotel in Europe does not mean it is. Mansfield himself could have wrote that. The father I mean not the son ;)

Where would you think the largest hotel in Europe would likely be located? in a popular tourist resort that attracts millions of visitors every year or next to an industrial estate in west Dublin..... Wait a minute maybe JM should have thought of that...

Meh, there's something on the Hotel website itself anyway.

Motorway access, easy public transport access and plenty of shops within a 5 mile radius is enough don't you think?

If you come up with a suitable business plan, I'm certain that the receiver will transfer her into your custody for a small fee.

Lol. Think of all the poor suckers who ate Jim Mansfield's appearance on the Late Late Show hook line and sinker, and proceeded to buy in "Aiken's Village" in the hope that the LUAS would be coming out their way. Instead, they're left in an extension of Tallaght.

You do know the Luas is nearly done, don't you? Just the shop at the Citywest Stop is all that needs to be put in now really?

Some great GAA nights here. Surprised it's in trouble as whenever I was there the place was plódaithe with most if not all 1700 rooms taken. I've never seen any hotel as busy, but then again I was only there on GAA nights.

Off topic obviously but Aikens Village is in Sandyford and close to the green line luas not the red line that is nearly finished out to Citywest. The green line extension from Sandyford (close to Leopardstown roundabout) is scheduled to be open later this year and will go via Ballyogan, its nearest stop being Glencairn - not more than a 10 minute walk from Aikens Village.

Stayed in it few months ago and had an inkling there was "trouble at mill". Tiles cracked in the bathroom, door handles failing off and a general lack of repair evident in the rest of the building.

What's the name of the place on the corner at the end of Jobstown and near the road to Blessington? Maybe I'm mixed up. Haven't been out that way in years.

The Belfry is in between Jobstown and where I live, so maybe that's where you're thinking of?

    And no chip, do you?

That's it: the Belfry. Very similar in architectural blandness. Is there a LUAS out that way?

It's rather bland alright, the houses and apartments are all white and yellow, so they don't pop out.

The Belfry is at the Blessington Road side of Citywest, Fortunestown is down the other side, where the Luas is coming through and into Carrigmore then Citywest.

That doesn't seem to stop you holding forth on the area though?

Luas works are well advanced. Saw them the other day. It's not just Mansfield, but also Hickey that invested in it and I think it was mostly existing land donation anyway.
