the skin of fish..

    I have always eaten a bit of fish, but now for the first time in my life these days I'm very concious about what I'm eating.

    So we all know the skin of chicken is bad [well, less good!] and those trying to eat well would generally get rid of it.

    So what about the skin of fish? I am eating grilled or baked salmon here, and was just eating the skin and wondering if its any better or worse for you than the rest of the fish?

    A bit OT but what are your reasons for not eating the skin of chicken? Is it because it contains fat or is it that the quality of the fat from a chicken might be sub-optimal?

    Back on topic.. would also like to know whether it is benefical to eat the skin of a fish? What nutrients am I missing out on when I discard it?

    I don't eat the skin of the chicken because we are told that there is more fat in it than in the rest of the chicken

    Personally, Im not necesserily eating 100% 'low fat' everything, but eating sensibly and watching what I eat in the name of a balanced diet, and in that regard I don't need that extra fat in the chicken skin :)


    The inteweb tells me that fish skin is fine, even good for you, but Yahoo Answers is not what it used to be :D

    I never knew nor heard this. I also doubt it's true.

    As for fish if the skin contains more fat, surely that's what we want? ren't we supposed to eat fish for it's healthy fats?

    Chicken is so low in fat that it really doesn't matter. Besides one of the real myths of healthy diet is that naturally occuring fats are bad for you ;) I can imagine people removing the skin of chicken and eating it with a big portion of rice- it's like people eating 4 slice of toast with Butter and thinking the butter is the problem :P

    As I said in answer to your question about Fish skin. It is actually the fat in the fish that makes it so healthy, so why would you remove the skin if is a principal source of fat?

    I'll happily eat both. Fat is awesome.
    But if I am watching calories I remove chicken skin.

    I have no idea what the nutritional beneifts of eating fish skin are,
    and I eat a lot of fish, but I only eat the skin if it has been well
    scrubbed and descaled before cooking, because it might not be very nice otherwise,

    Did get a bad tummy once, which I am sure was from the skin of a whole
    sea bass which had not been descled before cooking.
