ok so you want to eat out

lots of nice restaurants about.....you like the look of one BUT CAN'T FIND A MENU ON THE OUTSIDE, so you wander in, sit down and are presented with a menu, the waiter tells you he'll be with you in a minute...you're delighted, the place looks great and your missus can barely conceal her delight that it won't be beans and toasts this evening...as you admire the decor and the waiter approaches asking you what you want to drink you notice that the cheapest starter is about 10 euros and main courses are thirty plus..WHAT DO YOU DO NOW???

jesus christ, if your fcukin' tortilla chips are 15 euros then please have the decency to advertise how much you're going to rip me off!

sometimes when the restaurants/eateries DO ADVERTISE ON THE OUTSIDE - THEY ENTICE YOU IN WITH THEIR SPECIAL OFFERS, like early bird discounts or buy 1 get one free or free desert/drink with your meal...then you get in thinking you'll have a bit of that nice well-advertised offer only to be told

    1) oh sorry that doesn't apply at weekends

    2) oh sorry that offer only applies between 5.30 and 5.45

    3) oh sorry that we are all out of the free wine/free desert WE ADVERTISED OUTSIDE

    4) oh sorry that offer only applies if you have a beard

    5) oh sorry that offer only applies on days that end in an "x"

etc etc...of course all these excuses come out AFTER YOU HAVE MADE YOUR ORDER

Are we all agreed then that some restaurants really are the most unscrupulous of b'astards when it comes to advertising and pricing?

Or maybe I am just tight and slightly unhinged?

If they charge you a service charge and it wasn't on the menu or they don't inform you they cannnot force you to pay

And why would you pay a service charge anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,104 ✭✭✭easyeason3

    €10 for a starter & €30 for a main course isn't expensive.

    Stop being a tight arse.

And if you can't do that take her to Supermacs.

Could you not just look up a decent restaurant on the Internet and then head out? Would save the missus having to be dragged half way round town looking at restaurants as well.

There was nothing stopping you from asking to see the menu before you sat down. If it doesn't appeal at that stage you can leave without getting your pants in a knot.

I thought this thread was going to be dealing with really angry oral sex. I'm disappointed, to say the least.

Gah changed the title so now I look mental.

yeah and half of them don't coz their prices are so scandalous, they rely on us being shamed to stay there as we don't want to look like tightarses marching out of there in front of our dates after already being seated by the waiter.

the crab salad may be 25 euros but what price your shame, son?

That new title's even worse than the other one. All I can think of is oversized American women on Jerry Springer episode - "You Too Fat to be All That".

Just say "sorry, we've changed our minds"
Be polite, just don't walk out and say nothing. Thats rude

can you do that while the waiter is walking over with your expertly-prepared cocktails?

Simple rule when buying anything.... if you are worried & you have to ask the price, chances are you can't afford it.

    Good food costs money.
Yeah you can find a restaurant that will offer much cheaper prices but it's mostly hit or miss.

Very easy way out of this, glove slap the waiter and more often than not you will get your meal for free.

Have said cocktails if you want, then get the bill.

They can't force you to stay for dinner.

If you can't find a menu outside, you walk up to the desk at the front and ask to see one before deciding whether you're going to sit down or not.

    Simples.

Because the OP most likely had a lady friend & was trying to look like he knew what he was doing.

Really what happened is that he bent over so the restaurant could rodger him & was too proud to say anything about it.

Really i would go in see prices and if not worth it leave without giving any reason.I am not beholden to make excuses.

if your missus expects you to pay stupid prices - instead of just upping sticks and leaving - just to keep her happy then you need a divorce...

the solicitors will be expensive, but you'll save money on feeding her in the long run

separate drinks menu which is reasonably priced by irish standards as I am used to being ripped off in pubs

Yay!! I just logged on especially to see how this thread naming was going. Am not disappointed!

I hate to be critical though, but I don't think the restaurant's pricing was actually illicit. Maybe something a bit more specific like "Going into a restaurant without having seen the menu beforehand and then, upon seeing the menu, deciding that the food and drinks are a bit too pricey for your liking; or else, sometimes there's a Special that you can't avail of for some reason - and how you should act thereafter" ??

ummm.....are thread titles that long allowed?

surely something that long won't fit (give me some credit as the architect when you get to the punchline)

Unless you are 17, just get up and leave. If they didn't give you flowers and a nice piece of jewellery on the way in, they are not getting the ride.

My missus would laugh a lot at that comment.Nah, I like fine dining, I spend more on restaurants than on petrol. I've eaten in most of the greats. My comment was regarding the op. If you don't like the prices, just leave, its a free country. As a kid my da knew a lot of "famous" chefs, and I reckon its the toughest job going, and never resent paying for a good meal.
