It's also Amanda Bynes last movie as she's retired from acting (at 24)..

    .. a nation weeps!

It has Emma Stone.. who's a stone-cold fox however!

For a second I mixed up Amanda Bynes with Emma Stone....phew. :o

That being said, it's interesting to hear a 24 year old retire from the business, I'd love to know what made her make that decision.

I actually like Amanda Bynes...she's made some right stinkers, but some good ones as well. What I Like About You is a great tv show, she can act and has great comic timing, she can also do improv. You'd think her "star" was good enough to get serious lead roles and work offers, but it appears she has become very typecast.

Her IMDB profile dosen't actually list that many roles, she hasen't done that much compared to other actors and counterparts....i think given the right role she could really surprise people.

She tried to do "sexy" in Maxim: http://www.maxim.com/girls/girls-of-maxim/85785/amanda-bynes.html

    Nah, did nothing for me.

She "retired" from acting because she couldn't get any work, lol.

This is getting some great reviews especially for Stone but why are they comparing her to Lohan

Yep, this is meant to be excellent.

Will wait for the DVD though.

Have you ever seen a movie starring Lindsay Lohan? I've only seen one (Herbie), but based on that I would not believe she's ever in the tabloids. Might as well be a different person altogether.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. When I first came across Emma Stone a good few years ago she reminded me of Lohan straight away.

Can definitely see the similarities between the two but obviously Lohans public persona has changed a LOT since then.

Emma Stone is both a far impressive actress and more attractive than Lohan has ever been.

    Just my opinion though!

Saw it a couple of days ago, it's exactly what you'd expect from this kind of film, decent but nothing to write home about. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson were standout as Emma Stone's parents and overall the performances were good. It is only a teen romcom, not Fellini.

I think the point is, while it's only a teen romcom it's aboce average for such a flick, of course it's not Felini...it's in the same vein/standard that Mean Girls is at, a cut above the rest of the pack.

Thought it was okay, parents were right out of the Juno universe in the sense that they were way too cool and witty.

Finally got round to seeing this last week and it was enjoyable - Stone was great in the lead role as was Tucci and Clarkson as her parents
I was kinda hoping for more of a romance between Olive and Mr. Griffith than Olive and the tool from Gossip Girl
and Cam Gigandet was wasted in the film

Still haven't watched it, must get round it in Jan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

You really need to Richard, tis excellent.

I was very surprised with how adult the humour was for a so called teen film.

It was funny, but with all the Mean Girls/Juno comparisons floating around I was expecting it to be better in a way...

Saw this today, very impressed, well acted and most of the script is well written. I like how they set a different tone to mean girls, going for a slightly more serious, yet still entertaining, mood.

Yep, her (along with Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone") got my vote in the 'Best Actress' category in the Film Awards - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056131729.

She's great in this.. endearing, very witty and stunning looking!

She is nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress musical or comedy and I expect her to get a nomination also in the mtv movie awards (not as if they matter though)

I also nominated her in the Film Awards ;)

Finally watched it....have it playing in the background as i type. This is by far the best written teen movie in many years, it has a very 80's Hughes-ian feel to it, in fact John Hughes is refrenced many times as are classic 80's teen flicks.

It's very cleverly written, great dialogue and banter, while the story itself is simplistic it's the script that really sells this, as does Emma Stone....an utterly superb performance from her, best actress nods well deserved.

The supporting cast are also very strong, it's engaging, very funny and it dosen't dumb down the audience, Will Gluck has probably created a film that in years to come will be up there with Mean Girls and the best of John Hughes.

    4.5/5

oh man, i'm all about the script in that movie, although i guess it's the kind of humour you either love or hate. there were FU moments in Easy A, of which i was hoping for more, but i've watched FU probably 6/7 times and still enjoy it! I mean come on... "What's up? I'm Dr.Rick...*pound*" gets me every time :D

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

The ONLY good thing about FU are the girls, i spotted loads of girls from Greek, 90210, GG, Knight Rider in this.

They seemed to pool girls from every tv show possible: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1083456/fullcredits#cast

'Fired Up' is hugely under-rated IMO. Terrible script? Not a chance.. it's got some cracking lines in there:

"I could be watching a Project Runway marathon with Nathan Lane under my dress and STILL win a straight award! "

"Would you shut up? I'm too straight to be gay. I could suck knob and still be straight. I could have one in my mouth and two in each hand and still win a straight award."

"So not only yesterday do I find out I'm adopted. The people I've been calling "Mom" and "Dad" are actually two infertile impostors who bought me outside of a meth clinic in Cincinatti for two boxes of Sudafed, but I also get this news dropped on me - my birth father, Bruce... well he needs a kidney and I'm the only match and apparently Bruce needs it "stat". Mmm-hmm. You need it stat, Bruce? Huh? Well maybe I needed a father stat instead of my stay-at-home dad who showers me with love everyday of his life, this goddamn spermless liar! "

'Easy A' is a better made movie, but 'Fired Up' is far more quotable!

I really don't get the John Hughes comparisons but maybe I don't have as good a memory of his films as everyone else.

I know there's quite clearly a few nods to his films but I don't see why that makes it Hughes-ian in any way.

John Hughes wrote teen movies with relatable teen characters in it..

.. look at 'The Breakfast Club' - the brain, the athlete, the prom queen, the rebel, the outcast etc.

Now take at the caricature of a teen from the majority of teen movies lately. Characters are written with one thing in mind - take a major attribute of their personality and completely blow it over the top - whether it's campness, bitchiness, jock etc.

Wil Gluck writes identifiable teenage characters which John Hughes excelled at.

So John Hughes made a film like The Breakfast Club which played on stereotypical but likable characters?

And most modern teen movies do the same thing but manage to get the likable part completely wrong?

    Still confused....

John Hughes wrote teen characters which were stereotypical from the outset.. but explored their personalities to reveal that they were more than their stereotype made out. It was this plus John's writing that made these characters identifiable and likeable.

Teen movies nowadays have a characters with are stereotypical but with one single attribute blown out of all proportion - dumb jock, bitchy prom queen etc.

Characters like John Bender will go down in history.. anyone name a character Lindsay Lohan has played in the past 10 years? Thought not!

Overall it's a terrible cringeworthy Hollywood movie, but some of the dialogue/humour was priceless. The chemistry in the family home is spectacular, I would love a movie all about that family, forget the school.

defo not a movie that aimed for average teenagers :D i quite enjoyed it. the family scenes are the best ones and the rest is fine, interesting enough to keep me finish the whole movie(i usually constant rant or just turn it off the bad movies). worth a watch if you have time and wanna see Emma Stone's good performance.
