Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The profile on that route looks great! One for the calendar.

Thanks Diarmuid. We've front loaded the course with plenty of hills so by the time you get to the feedstop, you'll be over the worst of it!

edit; I do realise I paid out for club league so thats excepted.

Think this will be my first sportive. It's on a rare free sunday for me and the distance is probably just about right. I have done the tough bits of the course before so I know what to expect. Hope I don't get in anyone's way.

€10 for 1 day Cycling Ireland cycle licence??

Never heard of this - can someone please shed some light?

A "One Day Licence" is exactly what it says! If it is a requirement to enter a particular event that you are a CI licence holder and you don't want to pay the annual sub you can pay €10 and get a licence for the day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,718 ✭✭✭AstraMonti

I have a non-competition cycling ireland license, I believe that it covers this. It costs 20quid and you can use it any event like that (again I think).

No discount for Orwell (or Orweel) members but we'll try to get an extra sandwich organised at the feedstop!

I hate to let the club down but it's the same weekend as the Surf & Turf 300.

    re 1 day licence;

I still don't understand - what's it for? Where does the money go? There's already an entry/registration fee so what's the licence all about?

I presume Cycling Ireland is a sporting body looking after cycling in Ireland but what does it do? Why do you need to pay money in top f a registration fee to ride your bike in an event?

    just wondering is all.....

With an entire winter of training spins, summer touring spins, a whole season of club league racing, support with other ventures into racing, a racing licence, not to mention talks on stuff like training and racing techniques and nights out I'd say membership of Orwell is a great bang for your buck.

It costs over €400 to join a hockey club for a season.

I wonder what proportion of all known cycle-related topics have been covered on f=410? I mean, will we one day finally run out of orginal things to talk about (e.g. like the way Cycling Plus has)?

:D Just noticed I posted this in the Orwell Sportive thead and not the Broomwagon :o

But on the subject of the sportive, I think I will give it a go. Haven't cycled in that part of the country in years!

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭Ghosty669

Following the weekends bad weather, a few of the gang cycled the first half to the sportive today and the word back was : 'it's going to be tougher than Mount Leinster'. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,095 ✭✭✭buffalo

Is there a closing date for signing up to this? I want to do it, but I'm not sure if that weekend will work out for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭Ghosty669

The closing date online is the 14th of August or you can enter on the day for an extra 5 euro.

We're trying to get as many people to register online so we have an idea of numbers to cater for so hence the discount.

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭Ghosty669

Hey folks, just a reminder that this is coming up on Sunday so get your entries in now and save yourself 5 euro on the day.

    Ghosty,

I'm registered for this but will be driving there. I know St. Olaf's but haven't been there for a while. Any idea re parking? Also does anyone know is the industrial estate itself Pay & Display on saturdays? I know there is a Luas car park where Atlantic was but I'm cheap:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭manwithaplan

It's on a sunday. I sent an e-mail to the organisers about parking and they said there would be loads around the industrial estate.

Hey BrayBlue24, as mentioned the sportive is on a Sunday and we basically have an entire industrial estate to ourselves so there'll be no problem regarding parking. There's plenty around the start finish so no need to worry about Pay and Display.

Thanks lads. Don't know where I came up with that one sure I knew it was Sunday:rolleyes:

I'll just go and sit quietly in the corner

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭Ghosty669

Update on the weather : Sunday will be another dry, warm day with temperatures reaching 20 or 21 degrees in much of the country, there will be some bright and sunny spells however there may be some misty periods at times too. Winds will remain light to moderate and northerly in direction. In other words : perfect cycling weather!

I'm in anyway, I heard there's a climb called 'the wall' (insert danger music here....) and that was enough for me :)

I think frenchie is too, after that I don't know.

Neris, don't worry if there's anyone to start with it's the Orwell tourers, they're a great bunch of lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,504 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

I'm all signed up for this. Orwell sportive and SK tour are my 2 goals left for the year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,755 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

I'll be doing this, haven't signed up yet, but then I reckon I'd be late for me own funeral!

Like DirkVoodoo, this and the SK are the last goals for the year....oh and the big one... the Howth TT of course:)

Looking forward to meeting you all. I'll be in a light blue Salvarani jersey - do say hello before you burn off into the distance.

I have cycled all the hilly bits of this at one time or another (actually no - did the Shay Elliott from the other side) but have no idea where "the wall" is. There's a bitch of a short climb on the back road from Roundwood to Laragh and a very steep bit approaching Lough Tay but I have never heard them called that.

Leroy, I hope you will be united with me in milking every drop out of this for Howth TT excuses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,755 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

Sure will. Already have a few done up.

I'm an endurance cyclist, short TT's are not my bag

The climb was too short, was only getting into my rhythm and it was over.

I more an explosive climber, climb went on for too long.

Damn tri-bars snapped - damn chainguard failed

Steep bits were too steep and other parts weren't steep enough to make use my undoubted talent (talent may be the incorrect term!)

Took so long to finish the Orwell that I missed my starting time

    The butler did it!!

Ok, here we go....this is the wall apparently.

And this is what you're lookin at when yer baytin yer way up it.....

    the_wall.jpg

  • Registered Users Posts: 187 ✭✭Ghosty669

You'll see from the elevation guide that some of it is around 20%. However if the weather is wet, there's no way you'll get up there so we may have to change the route to avoid this 'wall'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,755 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

I thought the Wall was the climb heading into Enniskerry on the way home. Thats what they called it on the W200 when they did that part of the route.

Doesn't matter I suppose, both look like fu3kers!!!!

Think you're talking about the 'Poggio' as we call it. Not to frighten anyone but 'the wall' is much worse! At least you'll have that to look forward to the Poggio on the way home!

Looking at this pictures I am wonder about my response to the man in the shop when he asked if I wanted a triple and I of course responded with absolute indignation "no way man". It looks real tough for a 39 / 25!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,830 ✭✭✭doozerie

From a ride earlier this year my Garmin recorded the highest gradient on "the wall" as 16.7% and that was just for a very short distance. I'm not sure how accurate the Garmin measurements are, or how accurately they are interpreted (on ridewithgps.com), though. My Garmin shows it as being a little over 1% steeper than the steepest part of Devil's Elbow, by comparison, though personally I think Devil's Elbow is actually a tougher climb.
