Awhile ago ,I started to eat weetabix for breakfast , however I gave them up after a week as my skin all over got very itchy , the itchiness gradually stopped when I gave them up.

Is it ok to eat porridge or muesli ?
I have always eaten wholegrain bread and never noticed itchy skin so I think I will keep eating wholegrain bread.

Oats are usually OK for those with wheat intolerance, but in general it's a case of using the process of elimination to find out what does and doesn't work for you.

If you have wheat intolerance, it would be odd that wholegrain bread works OK for you. Weetabix is made from wholegrain, so it seems unlikely that wheat alone is the problem.

It's possible that this may not be a wheat intolerance but instead something which is often found in wheat products, such as sugar or yeast. Itchiness can be a symptom of diabetes - *but* that's a worst-case scenario.

My advice would be to find a way to reliably cause these symptoms to appear in a mild way - i.e. prove that eating white bread or weetabix causes it and that it goes away when you stop eating them. Then go to a doctor and they can perform blood tests for relevant allergies or conditions.

I think its definitely an allergy , as it seemed to come on as soon as I started to eat weetabix , its not white bread that I eat , I meant Irish pride healthy grain brown, maybe it only makes my skin itchy in large amounts.....

    Thanks for the replys

You don't have a wheat allergy if you're able to eat bread - bread is made primarily from wheat. Check out the other ingredients in weetabix, might be something else you're reacting to.

Anyway, the solution is simple to stop eating weetabix!

There's not a lot in Weetabix other than wheat - from their website: Wholegrain Wheat (95%), Malted Barley Extract, Sugar, Salt, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid.

Edited to add - try Shredded Wheat - cos that only has wheat in it, and nothing else. If you get a reaction after eating that - it's the wheat!

    I didn't know that, but then again I don't buy weetabix :)

Niacin can give you a temporary skin rash, but it's completely benign and not much to worry about. I really hate when they fortify food though, they normally use the bargain-basement sythetic chemicals that have been shown to do more harm than good in some trials.

I hate wheat anyhow, it's not good for the majority of people and does horrible things to cholesterol, but in this case I wouldn't think that it's the wheat causing the rash.

    It wasn't a mysterious 'rash'!

My skin was tearing itchy ,it stopped when the weetabix stopped , it must be something with the weetabix, anyway I actually dont eat bread everyday. So if its not linked to wheat I don't know what then.

And I got a glucose test a few years ago, and a bloodtest a few months ago ,so no diabetes !!!!

The thing with niacin like Temple pointed out is it can mnake your skin itchy and red and give you a rash - it's called the 'niacin rush' but it only occurs really if you consume a very large amount of niacin afaik so unless you had a mega dose vitamin of it followed by the wheetabix im not so sure that it's the niacin. I also doubt its wheat if you are able to consume other wheat products. Anyway, sounds like wheetabix just is not for you.

I take 1 multibionta probiotic multivitamin each day , which contains 18mg of Niacin (which is 100% the RDA according to the label) maybe thats it??
