Just wondering why do people train in three day splits?

Like if they want to look like athletes surely this would be more of a body building routine?

please correct me if I am wrong

People do what they like to do not what they need to do or what would be best for them asthetically or from a performance perspective.

Stand in any gym on either a Monday and you will find half the guys in the place doing bench and gunz....the other half are doing it Friday :)

Well that depends on what constitutes an athlete as well as what their goals are for their current exercise programme. Obviously what the programme itself has a huge bearing, is it powerlifting, bodybuilding, strength & conditioning, plyometric and whatever number of other types of programmes there is. What training they are doing aside from resistance also comes into play. What amount of time they have to train also matters.

I could go on all day.
