IT'S now going to cost €6 to see one of the country's most stunning natural attractions -- after a council imposed a viewing charge for the first time.

The Cliffs of Moher, a 600ft- high natural landmark in Co Clare, will now be pay per view, in a controversial move seemingly designed to cover the cost of a failing visitors' centre.

The charge will apply to adults only and will also cover admission to the visitor centre.

The introduction of the charge comes against the background of the Cliffs Of Moher Visitor Centre Ltd incurring combined losses of €500,000 in 2008 and 2009.

Director for the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience, Katherine Webster described the new pricing structure as "family friendly" and said a single charge simplified their pricing structure for visitors.

So we now have to pay to look at our own scenery! what a ****ing disgrace!
This is on top of the 8euros to park your car in the carpark!

First they destroy it with concrete and then they want money from people.

    Welcome to Rip Off Ireland.

    Not suprised.

It's still free to look at.. you just have to pay for access to the site. It's not that uncommon.. you have to pay into Newgrange too, the charge is for the visitor center and guided tour, but even if you don't avail of either of those you still have to pay the cover

Those in power want everybody else to pay for their mistakes.

They wouldn't have lost that money, had they not built the monstrosity of a visitors' centre in the first place. Was it built on a CE scheme?

FFS I'm disliking my home country more and more.

Next thing you know they'll be charging money to kiss that stupid rock in Cork.
Or do they already do that?

At least it's still free to climb Carrantuohill, but how long will that last.

Surprised that they didn't charge for it before tbh...

What annoys me is why they can't make it an even €5 in stead of €6.

It's like the pub that charges €5.05 or €5.10:rolleyes:

More of a reason to go to Slieve League.

What they have done to it is terrible, the visitor centre just makes it look tacky. It didn't need anything to improve it, it was beautiful just the way it was!
I mean paying for parking to see something that nature created it absolutely absurd and as far as I know you cannot park anywhere else! The tourists who come to visit it must think we've just a nation of money-grabbers! I wonder if people complained would something be done about it?

I hope they offer a money-back option...we went to see them and there was just a grass verge and a wall of mist. The posters and postcards suggest they look impressive tho. :pac:

Do you have to pay €6 to jump off them too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

wasnt this the case already? i was there a few months back for the first time. There was a "facilities charge" up at the entrance but I just walked through muttering that they had already charged me €8 to park the car.

Saw several other Irish people say the exact same thing but the tourists seemed to be queuing up to pay

I was listening to this on JDuffy today and from what I understood it will be €6 per person in the car when they park up. So surely Daddy could drop Mummy and the kids off at the Cliff Park entrance and then drive into the car park, thus only paying for one.

On the plus side, if you are going to the Cliffs on your own you only have to pay €6 instead of €8!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

I went there a few years ago. When leaving the car park we were ready to pay but the barrier was up so we just drove out. Por guy in the hut had an epo, are they on comission? Or was the barrier being mean they just pocket the money?

It's not about the money aspect.
It's about the fact that you now have to pay a fee to access a geographical feature, due to the ''failings of the tourist centre''.

    There a ****in disgrace.
Meself and the missus have spent our lives living around the world and travel would probably be a big part of our lives.
Decided last month we were going to go to see "the cliffs".
So set out from Dublin early and arrived and I think we got stung €6 just to fu**kin park the car.
Then we crossed the road to see "the cliffs".
Looked at the cliffs and then looked at each other as if the say "that it" thats what we drove all the way down here to see.
Ive never seen such a pile of sh**e in all my life and I dont care what people say, its a fuk*n disgrace and I pity the people who find this scenic as theyve obviously saw not much else in their lives.
But to charge to see this sh**e now your taking the pi**

you have to pay to enter the national parks in us/canada too, it was $10 per person for grand canyon, yellowstone, yosemite, death valley etc last time i visited em

same thing with the national parks in croatia too a charge to view them

so this practice is not uncommon in other parts of the world

Well, I'd like to see what my 6 euro gets me before I go all spastic about it.

If it's a rip-off then I'll go full on spastic over it.

The visitor centre should be let fail. Visitor centres beside natural attractions just look horrible anyway.

You should go see Loop Head. It's free and better looking, no ugly concrete or tacky music-selling machines.

No AFAIK it was to provide money to local builders / supporters of FF

There was a fuss when they started charging people to visit Clonmacnoise. People who were visiting the graves of family members.

8 euro for parking here would get you about 2 days, oh and btw you don't have to pay for parking at the giants causeway or to view it which is quite stupid!

That might change. There is some hotl company that is offering to build a new visitor centre if they can build a hotel beside it.

The largest are on Achill Island. Bit of a walk too

correct me if im wrong but from being there years ago, you can easily walk to the cliffs from a different direction, therefore avoiding the visitor centre/car park ****e. It covers a huge area, its not like they have gates up to stop you getting near them.
