    Odds can be seen here.

    Previous winners are here.

Last 3 winners have been Zidane, Oliver Kahn and Ronaldo. For Kahn and Zidane, would I be right in thinking that this was their last match ?

With that in mind, and the likelihood being that this will be his last World Cup, I think that Lucio of Brazil, who has been brilliant up to now @ 28/1 is a great bet !

Opinions ? Thinking of spunking a tenner on this, just on the off chance. Pity they dont offer each way backing, because the only person I have seen better than him so far is Villa, who will probably take it, but there's little value to be had.

Klose @ 40/1 seems a bit high here too. Probably down to the red, but...retiring soon and has always put in a great WC shift.

Ozil so far, but the winner will be picked out of the rest of the matches imo.

hopefully Di Maria wakes up as i have him at 100/1

Good thread. History says a final is minimum to win so would be avoiding German/Argentinian players.

Lucio is potentially a great shout at the price although centre halves have a bad record. Cannavaro won World player of the Year in 2006 (i think) but missed out on Ballon D'or due to the crap decision sytem.

Considering the draw and the way it's decided, Robinho @ 18/1 could be a bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,975 ✭✭✭nkay1985

Would think Forlan is a half decent bet at 28/1. He's been very good in all bar the Korea game. Ghana aren't a bad side but you'd imagine that if he plays to form he could cause them big trouble and be seen as the major reason behind getting Uruguay to the semi-finals. Considering they haven't been to the quarters since 1970, this would be a massive achievement and he could jsut nick it if Villa or Messi underperform or if they don't reach the final.

It's very hard to look past Villa or Messi though if they both get through their quarter final ties.

Schweinsteiger is a massive price @ 28/1. Will have a great chance of winning it if Germany get to the final, He has been immense.

if Spain get to the final and David Villa keeps on doing what he does best then he looks a sure thing imo, but if Uruguay get to the semis, then who knows a shock final appearance then Suarez at 66/1 looks a good bet, if he chips in with a few goals and good performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

This is voted on before the final, isn't it?

I reckon it'll be Villa. He's scored some very nice goals and will be in one of the easier quarter finals. I suppose the handbags against Chile could count against him.

Ozil has made a big impact and if he helps Germany beat Argentina, I'd say he's in with a shout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭Hoki

Iv Maicon backed since before the WC at 66/1 - he started off well with that cracker vs N.Korea but has been quiet enough since . Lucio looks like a nice bet now but its hard to see past Villa - he is having another fantastic tournament.

His mind could have been on other things lately(like a move to Madrid), or maybe he's just not that good. Portuguese league ain't of the highest standard.

If he wins I'll be ragin ...... cause I bet on him 4 years ago when he was just a kid and playing on the wing :D Great player IMO

Best player in the world David Villa for me! 9/2 with Bet365, I'll probably take that :) Messi needs to score a few I'd say before he'd get it so he looks a little short. Lucio looks good value as well at 28s.

Good shout. It will probably be a key midfielder (a captain type) from 1 of the finalists. The press will vote from a shortlist of players put forward by Fifa.

I mentioned Sneijder pre tournament at 50's and I think he went in to 20's in some books before the off, he's got a great shout if Holland can squeeze by Brazil.

Mark van Bommel or someone of his sort wouldn't surprise me either the way the voting tends to go, if they go that far.

Ozil for young player of the tournament and Cesar for Keeper.

If Germany reach the final and win it.

Schweinsteiger IMHO should win player for the tourney.... but he won't. It'll be Ozil(Young player of the tourney he'll win for sure) or Klose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,979 ✭✭✭Vurnon San Benito

Diego Forlan won't be far off it. Been Uruguay's best player. Has scored goals, and assisted the others. 28/1 is great odds for him.

Schweinsteiger will certainly be up there too if they beat Argentina and progress. Been another rock for his team.

Smeltz is rumoured to be leading the chase though :D

Is anybody else in agreement with me that sarez is not good??

He never passes the ball, looks overwight and loses the ball 85% of the time he gets it.
Scoring 49 goals in holland while impressive enough is in my opinion equivalent to 15 in england

I disagree. I'm an Ajax fan btw, I've family in Amsterdam and have seen Ajax play over a dozen times or so in the last 3 years and I believe I have fair picture of the lad and what he is capable of.

For a pure winger turned forward(I wouldn't never call him an out and out striker), scoring 49 Dutch league goals the equivalent of 15 EPL goals(in your opinion) is an outstanding return in my book(I mean the 15 EPL goals).

Overweight!? He's a bit stocky if anything but that's a bit strong to say even still. He is very quick, trust me on that. He's as quick as Rommadahl(who's also at Ajax) who is one of the quickest wingers with the ball.

He can be frustrating at times but that can be said of nearly every forward in the world.

I'd gladly have Suarez at Liverpool in a heartbeat. Not that we can afford the lad :(

I backed Muller for young player before WC. Got him at 13/2.

I reckon its between him or Oezil at this stage. Id be hopin they would give Oezil the main one and give Muller young player.

Lucio is great value at that price.

Not a hope Sarez is good enough to will win it. In fact, I don't think there's a player in the tournament called Sarez.

Ya I live in Amsterdam and have also seen him play and would definitely say he's more kezman and afonso alves than he is robin van persie or ruud van nistelrooy when it comes to potential success in the premiership. He was very bad against Mexico and he was crap against South Korea yet he scored two goals so everyone is going to harp on about him. Anyway I'm not going to change anybodies mind but this is the gambling forum so i suppose i shouldn't try to. Only time will tell i suppose.

    Brazil 10/11 tomorrow, great bet.

oh right, ye reading it here on wiki, there was always a fifa survey or poll though, and by the looks of it perhaps ozil is too old, considering he was born 15 October 1988. I think he had to be born on or after 1st January 1989, it was 1st Jan 1985 in 2006 so I presume it hasn't changed.

I stand corrected on all fronts!

I was reading the rules on it somewhere last night, might have been fifa website and from what i can remember it said that the oldest you could be to win it was 21, dont think it mentioned dates you had to be born after. i know there ie something about it on wikapedia mentioning dates re podolski alright

Still pretty happy with my bet on Maicon @ 100/1... 33/1 biggest price at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

I've backed 3 Brazilians at the start since they are going to win the competition.

    Kaka @ 16-1
    Robinho @ 33-1
    Maicon @ 150-1

All 3 still have some hope and the press seem to be warming to Robinho. After all 50% of the vote is from the media, other 50% from FIFA.

    He's a diver.
Watch the games against South Africa and South Korea and he was embarrassing at times. Don't know how he'll be against South Ghana, but i'm sure some of their defenders will get close to him. I don't think anybody who dives worse than Heinze should be considered for best player.
Currently we have Villa, Messi, Schweisteiger, Ozil, Mueller, Lucio, Sneijder and I think the vote is at half-time in the final, but I could be wrong. I remember when Zidane won it was voted on before his nut-job.

I have Sneijder at 40/1. Thought it was a good price for a player who was the best in the CL this year.

If Holland can pull off an upset against Brazil then there's a chance this might come in

I found him so frustrating in the Uruguay game. One time in particular in the second half when forlan had stolen a yard on his man and was on the edge of the 6 yard box ready for a tap-in as Suarez cut in from the right but Suarez insisted on taking a shot from an impossible angle.

Diving is a good thing to consider actually in the betting. Schweinsteiger has been immense too and if the beat argentina he must be a good shout, I just can't see Ozil winning it as he is so young. Then again who knows how they decide. Villa really has been excellent too, is there any chance of him winning it if Spain crash in the semi final?

Doubt it to be honest. Will have to be someone that excels in the quarter & semi finals... Happy with my original Maicon bet for the moment, If Germany get by the Argies tomorrow I will be backing Schweinsteiger !

If Holland win the World Cup I would lump everything I have on Sneijder for World Player of the Year when you consider how influential he was for Inter in their treble winning season.

Got Sneidjer at 18/1 before the Slovakia last 16 now... looks on now:D Cracking player even if he wasnt at his best today... btw hes 14/1 for top scorer and with him just 1 behind Villa on 3 I reckon thats a great e/w shot consideing their opponents are a weaker and (after todays game) a more fatigued team. Mite ave a punt on that too..

Sneijder has been given hollands first goal yesterday

he is now on 4 goals aswell now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

All good news relating to Sneijder.

I should be in nice profit for the WC anteposts with the following bets on:

    50 on Spain at 4/1
20 on Holland sweepstakes (160 for winner, 50 for Runners-Up)
5 on Sneijder player of the tourney at 40/1
5 on Klose top scorer at 33/1
10 on Xavi player of the tourney at 14/1
    (30 on lost bets)

If we discount Uruguay as a possible winner I'm looking good except for being a bit thin with regards a German win (and I actually would have them as very slight favs now).

So how to play this? I'm thinking of rather than betting say 50 on Germany to win the WC at 2/1, to instead bet half the stake on them to qualify against Spain at Evs. If they do then I'll lump the winnings on them in the final. That way if they don't beat Spain I'll have only lost half the stake. DOes this make any sense or will I just get on them to win the tourney?

Dream scenario would be Spain to win it, Sneijder to bag player of the tourney and Klose to run riot in the 3rd Place play-off winning the Top Scorer award!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

Is anyone else of the opinion that Schweinsteiger to be player of the tournament at 5/1 represents far greater value than Germany to win it at 2/1?

If Germany win it I can't see it going to anyone else...
