ipd/ extreme low carbing

    hi all,
long time lurker here & have a q about low carbing.
basically read the ipd & want to start phase one in the coming days, what's got me a bit concerned is the long list supplements they INSIST you take (1 multi-vitamin, psyllium husks, chromium supplement, fis oils, vitamin B complex)

+ the fact that things like berries, yogurt, porridge, milk are banned + perhaps an over dependcy on seemingly really bad stuff like butter & double cream (they seem to use in loads of the recipes) ??
*my diet history is i've lost 2 stone so far over 3 months by cutting crap, a little bit of weight watchers style at 1st & them progressively more & more low carbing (after reading up on it from places like here, was a total nutrition novice before -& still kinda am!)
Anyways, not worried about implementing it, actually have got to like low carbing, but want to take it to the next level & start phase 1. Thing is, as i have another 4/5 stone to lose (& the idp suggests to stick to phase 1 until your within 1 stone of goal) it would mean i will be eating extremely low carb style for many months...
is this a healthy? am i missing out on any key nutrients? should i make sure there are things i eat religiously every day (eg cheese for calcuim) & do you have to take all those supplements?

    thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum Pisceden!

I am also doing the IPD Diet. I can tell you my own experience but I am no nutritionist so I dont know if this has been cientifically proved good or bad for the body...

I'm on it nearly 4 weeks now and i have lost so far over 5lb, which is not loads, but I only have over a stone to loose.

I am still on Phase 1 because I want to loose the most weight before I go on my holidays in augoust.

About the supplements, I take the husks, the vitamin B, the multivitamin and the crhomium. The husk is fibre to keep you "regular", the chromium helps with the sugar cravings and the vitamins, well, vitamins that you are not getting from fruit and carbs I suposse....:o As you can see I am not taking the fish oil, and Im ok. Fish oil is just good for you but not essential for this diet, I dont think.

Phase 1 or Induction is when you cut all carbs up to like 20g per day, which is nothing. But this is just the first stage, you are not meant to live like this.

It is really up to you how long you want to stay on Phase 1 (min 2 weeks). Phase 2 re-introduces some carbs and you still loose weight but at a lower pace. Phase 3 is just like a balanced diet, but still lwoer in carbs that other balanced diets.

I think is healthy because you eat fresh food, and you are meant to cook everything from scratch, you eat loads of green veggies and it balances the sugars in your body. Before the diet i was suffering from "shakes" before my lunch, i think that was because the sugar spikes i was getting all the time. I havent had another one since i started this diet.

    I hope this is helpful!
    Good Luck!!!

are you referring to the idiot proof diet?
perhaps an over dependcy on seemingly really bad stuff like butter & double cream (they seem to use in loads of the recipes) ??
If you have a low carbohydrate intake high fat sources like butter and double cream are perfectly good. They're low in lactose, low in carbs and represent good healthful fat sources.

    thanks for the replies guys...

yup, it's the idiot proof diet we're talking about

suppose i was just worried that there might be some issues staying on phase 1 (the strictest) part for a least a couple of months...as long as it's not damaging/ im not losing out on any nutrients, i'm happy

*oh & have been reading your diary beatrice33, it's brill, loads of great low carb recipes... must be so much harder when you only have a little bit to lose, best of luck :)
