I've heard people going on bout the book, saying it's changed their lives.

Haven't bothered with it myself though. A book isn't going to change my life,i'd have to do that myself!

Didn't look at the movie though.

Are you refering to this crap
    http://thesecret.tv/
The Secret reveals the most powerful law in the universe. The knowledge of this law has run like a golden thread through the lives and the teachings of all the prophets, seers, sages and saviors in the world's history, and through the lives of all truly great men and women. All that they have ever accomplished or attained has been done in full accordance with this most powerful law.

Thats the first paragraph on that site and from not even bothering to read it I know its crap already!

IMHO its crap of the highest order, bought into by woolly headed people who buy into other forms of magical thinking. The science bits are utterly false. It is worth a laugh for the bit where the kid wishes for a bike and gets it. As far as I can tell it's aimed at bored american housewives who dont think they have enough stuff in their lives. It's also insulting to those whose lives have been tragic through no fault of their own.

I have a leaking tap i discovered this morning will it work on that or should I call a plumber, it would be so much quicker if i could throw a book at it to fix it.

My mother gave it to me to read, flicked through it, couldn't stop laughing and gave it back to her via my sister so I wouldn't have to tell her the above.

Yep. Ive read it and seen the movie. Its written by an ex sceintoligist which should raise an eyebrow for a start. The principles behind it have little or no basis in half decent philosophical, theological or psychological thought. It's a rehash of the think yourself happy cliche. That in of itself is bang on, but when you have the quasi religious and pseudo scientific stuff bolstered by a massive media campaign aimed at the vulnerable then I do take some issue.

I've no issue at all with self help books. Some of the greatest minds in history have written what could be described as self help books, but most of the recent output of that genre is incredibly shallow and bereft of merit.

It has some parts that is just common sense.

If they stopped at the point of, if you put yourself in enough positive situations you'll naturally have more positive things happen.

before going on to the attraction from the comsos or whatever the other rubbish is about it would probably be a half decent self help guide.

My mother and sisters and friend have read it, among other people.
My friend read it as a last resort. He now lives by himself in a tiny apartment after his wife threw him out cos she doesn't love him anymore. Worked well for him did it?
My mother is quite spiritual,is into alternative things, she read it. Didn't make a damn bit of difference to her life.

I do not know one person where that book has made a long lasting change on their lifes.

Then this thread was created and I went off to the net to read about it after what Wibbs said, now I cant stop laughing and am in such a great mood this book has really changed my day! :D:D

You could probably say that for nearly every self help book ever written.

By the time someone has got to the last chapter if they can remember one thing to keep doing I'd be surprised, if they kept up that habit or whatever is was for more than a month it would be a bit of a miracle

I've read it. I've also read other works, better works, by better minds and writers. It would be like comparing Dennis the Menace with the works of Confucius. Actually a read of the latter, with some Plato, Buddha, Jesus and a long list of others would serve people better. Of course that stuff tends to be hard to read and even harder to follow, so the "pill for every ill" in book form is easier to swallow for most.

I know its mad and not a little sad. I got into a discussion about it on another forum(gasp! I know, they exist!!). An american forum. And sweet zombie jesus it scared me how little they knew of physics or philosophy or theology(though all claimed to know Gaaawd(tm)). It was even more scary when you looked at what they wanted to get out of it and what their priorities were.

I have a friend who reads a lot of self help, Paul McKenna type stuff. They are generally quite negative and think a book will help them with their outlook. They've read a heap of them now and hasn't made much difference.

I, on the other hand, have never read any of them and I love me. I have a decent life and I appreciate it. I interact well with others and like to try new things (except Sushi, that's just gross).

So scientifically speaking it is better never to read those books than to read them all!

Whether its bollocks or not, isnt really the point. Fair enough the authors have cleaned up, but if something like that can give people who are terminally ill a faint bit of hope, i think its worth the price.

It's funny you should mention Buddha, who, among others, believed in a lot of the same principles of the secret and spoke of such.
Though, obviously enough, not to gain what people nowadays want to gain.

but hey, if it's wrote in modern times and by someone who made money off it then it's all bullshít right?

The Secret is complete and utter shyte for Oprah fans with a huge sense of entitlement. It's like a child whinging to it's parent in a shop for sweets but instead it's a grown adult pleading with the universe to be rich.

If the secret worked then all the people who suffer in terrible wars aren't wishing for peace enough. Or the people who starve from famine just don't want food enough.

Ironic that its called the secret, but its a worldwide bestseller. Maybe thats the problem. Secrets are supposed to be kept.

You see it's their fault for being negative. I read that the author blamed natural disasters on negative thinking or reporting on them or some such nonsense.

A lot of people think buddah was full of BS a lot of people think the bible is full of BS regardless of when they were written.

People who are inclined to read for these type of books will tend to be people who will be helped by the sort of BS in it.

He is kinda right there, seeing as we in ireland have very few real natural disasters to speak of. If the world stopped telling us its bad news we would think it was a great place.

We would be wrong but at least we would all be wrong together
