    :pac:
    Saturday June 26 2010

Senator Callely's statements to the committee.

    On losing his Dail seat.

"This had an immediate and devastating effect on my social and personal life."

On having to resign as Junior Minister after it emerged that he had got his house painted for free by a building contractor while he was chairman of the Eastern Health Board.

"As far as I'm concerned I was hung for a non-hanging offence in December 2005 and left me with no option but to resign as minister of state. The months that followed did not help my re-election prospects."

On why he was seen so much in Dublin.

"I am visible when I am in Dublin. I do not hide myself. I make myself clearly visible when I'm around and again maybe most politicians do that in the constituency. I shop in my local independent grocer, Nolan's in Vernon Avenue. I would be seen in the local gym. I would be seen walking my dog on the promenade ... I'm seen in west Cork walking my dog as well."

On meeting Fianna Fail Senator Denis O'Donovan in west Cork.

You don't always know when I'm there but as it happens in the last two or three weekends, we happened to bump into each other at a fair day, a butcher's shop and I forget where else.

On why he simply didn't ask the Seanad authorities to change his primary residence from west Cork to Dublin.

It certainly wasn't for financial advantageous (sic) as you put it. It would have been if I did full 12-month claims. It would have been far more financially advantageous, I didn't want to do that.

On the impact of the controversy on him.

What has been hard is the assumption that I have done wrong and the continual media bashing and other conclusions that have been arrived at by other means. That assumption that I have done wrong -- I have not.

On not ruling out running again for a Dail seat in Dublin North Central.

I'm also conscious of Richard Nixon's few words after his debate with John F Kennedy and where he ended up a few years later (as US president). And we all know a week's a long time in politics. I appreciate you don't necessarily want me to nail my colours to the mast on that one.

The man should be investigated, arrested and charged by the Fraud Squad, and sent off to prison where he belongs.

Anyone who "admires" him is an idiot, and represents everything wrong with politics in this country.

He just got an apartment redecorated.
It hardly all that base in the scheme of things, not to gloss over it or anything.
It sounds like it's really affected him financially. He's barely solvent by the sounds of it.

He is a disgrace to the state and its people, to the Seanad, to the area he came from and if he was in my family, he would be considered a disgrace to that too!

What he actually IS though, is a prime example of FF giving two fingers up to the public while singing "...Can't touch this..."

As Callely doesn't seem to know the difference between right and wrong, it's probably a good idea that he stays away from any public office, unless one of the jobs is cleaning the toilets somewhere.

Stripping him of his job was the right thing to do but I just think he's been hung out to dry a little.

My 2c... emailed to him and the leaders of the main parties, plus the Independent and Irish Times:
    Sir,

I read with disgust the recent reports in the media regarding some of your behaviour while holding public office in this country.

Let me not sugarcoat this - you are an example of the fundamental problem that exists in Irish politics today, and why so many members of the public (who you and your colleagues are supposed to represent) have little to no faith in the system - namely the objective of a TD (or above) is to get in, stay in, and get as much as you can for yourselves, your relatives
    and your friends.

It is this mentality, combined with parochial politics and an arrogance that the citizens of the country are there to serve you, rather than the other way around that has led the country into the mess we now find ourselves.

To be fair however, we the general public are also to blame, for rather than protesting effectively and insisting individuals like yourself are forced to resign once and for all when you're found with your hand in the till, we instead complain impotently amongst ourselves while you and your colleagues invent new ways to make us pay for your mistakes, however it does seem that the Irish people are starting to stand up and say enough is enough and I can only hope that your government is forced to step down before the damage you have done to this country becomes irreversible.

Under Fianna Fáil's watch, you have squandered the biggest boom this country has ever seen (or is ever likely to see again), and we have nothing to show for it. Sure we have a few new motorways (tolled in most cases), but our secondary roads are falling apart, our broadband and telecoms infrastructure lags behind most former Soviet bloc countries, our health
care system and education sector is a disaster, and much of the money that was pouring into the country for the past decade has mysteriously disappeared, or been given to those who caused the crash never to be seen again (thank you NAMA).

Of course now that the money is gone, your government's approach is to squeeze a population that has suffered massive job loss, income levies and salary cuts, and in some cases the loss of their homes, for even more money so that the gravy train at the top can continue to roll.

You and your party are a disgrace and have lost any mandate you had to govern. Your leader's refusal to hold by-elections in Donegal, Dublin South and Waterford shows the contempt Fianna Fáil has for the democratic process and the citizens of this country.

You call yourselves the Republican Party and claim to represent "the mainstream of Irish life", and "adhere to the great democratic principle of government of the people", however your personal actions and those of former colleagues (and I have no doubt, current colleagues who simply haven't been found out yet) belies these lofty goals and shows that - as
I stated at the start of this email - you are in fact only interested in what you can get for yourselves and your families and friends, and that the greater good of the country and the citizens you represent, is a concept that only occurs to you when an election rolls around.

I challenge you to prove me wrong, and apologise publicly and unreservedly for your actions and give (and honour) a commitment to our citizens that you will repay in full any monies you obtained illegally or incorrectly while in office.

I also call on Mr Cowen to set a date for the aforementioned by-elections so that the people in those constituencies are given the representation they are entitled to. Better yet, I call on him to set the date (at the earliest opportunity) for the next general election so that the Irish public can themselves give their verdict on his and Fianna Fáil's performance in this crisis.

    Regards,

a guy from Skibereen in West Cork rang up Joe Duffy during the week, and said that a few of them were discussing the Callely case in the pub, so for the hell of it they drove up to Dublin and clocked the mileage and figured out the amount of petrol it took to get to Leinster House from Skibereen.

From Skibereen to Leinster house in a 1.6 petrol.... €11

I've vented in other threads about this cretin(he's far from the only one mind) so that aside I am to assume his political career is well and truly over?

Does this unprecedented 'public hearing' all but spell the end for Our Ivor? Someone please appease the lust for political blood in my veins...please let sense prevail and let Our Ivor be kicked out of the Senad, stripped of any pension entitlements and let he be investigated for fraud ,fined and or imprisoned as appropriate.

    Will this happen....boll0x it will.

    Speaking of expenses...

In case anyone missed it yesterday in the Times and in todays Indo':
...Meanwhile, the much vaunted new expenses system in Leinster House has been watered down to allow TDs to be signed in as present in the Oireachtas without clocking in electronically. TDs and senators will be recorded as present when they are on foreign business, for which they will also be paid expenses. Party whips will also be allowed to certify that an Oireachtas member was present, even if he or she did not sign in or was not present for votes.

Talk about setting the laws up so that they can be abused yet again later!

Oh I got a reply at half 12 last night from Mr Enda Kenny asking why I'd sent it to him and that he's been pointing these issues out for years, so I replied:
    Enda,

The reason I copied you (and your fellow party leaders) on the email is to let you know that there are indeed many people in this country who have had enough of this sort of behavior and who believe we can do, and deserve better.

What's needed now is for elected representatives on ALL sides to put aside personal interests and party conflicts, and work towards getting our country back on track and restoring the faith of the general public in the political system.

However as you asked why I copied you, as the leader of the main opposition party to the current government, I believe that it falls to you to lead this change by offering a real alternative to Fianna Fail, and this can only be achieved by setting out a clear agenda with realistic objectives that can be met on time and on budget and going after the government on issues such as this latest scandal until they are forced to conceed.

Only then I believe, will there be a real alternative government in this country as Fianna Fail did not so much win the last election, as the other parties threw it away.

However, thank you for your prompt reply. Like you I hope to hear back from Mr's Cowen and Gormley, however that is far from certain.

Please don't hesitate to contact me should you require any further information

    With regards,

I suppose it's nice to know they read their emails anyway!
