    Hi there everyone.

I am a proud owner of a new iphone 4.
I only know 1 other person who has iphone 4, and he is having problems with his facetime setup on Vodafone.

Therefor I am creating this post so we can exchange contact info, and test out this new feature.

I will be posting my phone number below, when I get tired of people calling me, then I will X out my number, but hopefully this tread will continue without me :)

    Phone: xxx-xxx-xxxx.

    Sincerely
    Magnus Gunnarsson

After I made that call to you, Magnus, a camera icon appeared alongside the FaceTime button that wasn't there before.

    yea, I see that too.

Perhaps the phone puts it there to separate people that you have already called via facetime. or the phone saves some setting for easy access next time.

Time will tell. I am also eager on knowing the details on how the phone initiates calls.

My theory is that facetime is established via a phone call or SMS, then it drops the call and continues on wifi. the phone call or SMS is only to initiate a IP handshake.

    Sincerely
    Magnus

I thought FaceTime was wifi *only*?

It is, But the iPhone needs some way of comunicating with the other iPhone, Skype uses a username but the iPhone calls via the persons phone number, And then as maggisam said uses this to transfer and connect the IP of each user to the facetime application and then ending the call.

    Basically it is.

But how do you initiate a IP (wifi/router) call without using a server like skype or msn as a middle man.

You do that by calling or SMS, so the phones do their TCP/IP handshaking, then they continue on the wifi and the cell call or sms is dropped.

At least that is my theory.

I knew before I got the phone it does use voice calls to establish wifi video calls. But yesterday, when I was setting my phone up for facetime, I got a message on the phone saying something like "Facetime may use SMS to make calls, standard rates apply". This is realy smart, cus this means you dont need to call people first.

    Sincerely
    Magnus

Roger that. Mad people like me who sim-swap every 5 minutes are gonna bugger that up :-)

it should not be a problem, as the phone need to get a new handshake every time a call is made. so swapping cards would not affect this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 maggisam

you should look into Goggle voice..... ahhhhhh Sorry US only hehehe

Can we try it again with a different SIM? I want to test a theory.

Heres something Ive been lookin for clarity on regarding the whole Facetime thing

Say my girlfriend is in Oz on holidays & Im here in Ireland....she calls me, we're both in a wi-fi area & switch to Facetime - now, is she still paying per minute for the international call at a crazy roaming rate for as long as we're on waffling face to face or, like is mentioned above...does the whole thing (picture & voice) transfer to the wi-fi & is not charged anymore other than how long you were on the line for before you initiated Facetime??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 maggisam

yes she only pays up-untill you hit and accept the facechat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

Well, as Magnus now knows, I just successfully Face-Timed him using a dead microSIM -it's activated but has no credit (awaiting transfer). This proves that there is no charge whatsoever for the calls -even internationally, as I was using a British SIM to his Irish number.

    Class.

    Just FaceTime throughout!

I am looking forward, to get some more in depth guide in how facetime really works.
The funny thing was, he was able to call me from his deactivated SIM card, and yet I was able to see his phone number.

How is the whole IP address exchange being handled?? That is the big question...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Pulse8

hmmm but how must that work with the networks, obviously you gotta have some kinda cash on a sim to initiate a call...the network dosnt know beforehand that you intend to use Facetime

I assumed before launch that there'd be some kinda Facetime contacts section that would be setup & added to eachtime you initiated it with someone new

Why? It's supposed to be free and wifi only.

Because on the demo videos it shows that you make a "call" first....then if the phone recognises that its onto another iPhone 4 the facetime option appears on the menu (after the call is made)
How do you make a call with no credit?

Or is there some way of pre-selecting that you want to make a Facetime call before you put the request/call through to the other person?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 maggisam

you could perhaps, add someone in your address book, and from there press the facetime chat button

Yes, you just press FaceTime in contacts and away you go. It advises that you will share your number with the other person but that is all. Really, I do not see the use of your number as anything more dramatic than an iChat handle. It simply identifies you.

Maybe, facetime communicates to an apple Server based somewhere in the apple HQ, when the user dials the number and rings via facetime his/her iPhone connects to the server via wi-fi, the number being dialed is then searched for on the server of all iPhone 4's which are currently online via wi-fi and with facetime "active"( I'm not sure if there's an option ).

The number from the user making the call is then sent to the IP of the receiver, using apples software this pops up as a normal voice call but only requires a sim card for identification.

This would make sense as a phonenumber is an easy and unique way to identify each customer and is already the set way to communicate with others so why change this?

An easy way to see if this is right is too make a facetime call with no service on your device although Apple may not allow this.

it would make sence, that there is some server at work somewhere. what protocols are being used exactly, time will tell. but apple did give us a hint.

Essentially however, FaceTime is iChat AV for iPhone. Jobs presented an "alphabet soup" of technologies that were involved in making FaceTime work, many of which are shared with iChat AV, including:

H.264 and AAC, its ISO/MPEG video and audio codecs (just like iChat).
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), the open IETF signaling protocol for VoIP used by iChat AV.
STUN (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT), an IETF standard for dealing with lots of different kinds of NAT.
TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT), an IETF standard for allowing a client behind NAT to receive incoming requests like a server.
ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) an IETF standard which helps set up connections through NAT firewalls.
RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol), an iETF standard for delivering media streams in VoIP.
SRTP (Secure RTP) an IETF standard designed to provide encryption, message authentication and integrity for the data streams.

Yes, i just successfully placed another FaceTime call using my 3 Italia dedicated iPad data-only SIM (no calls can be made) and it worked immediately.

Yes it will: MiFi or adhoc network created by MacBook.

Apple are doing a facetime test for those who have nobody to call, I'm not sure if it works in Ireland though don't have an iPhone 4G to test it on (yet ;p)

I tried it but it didn't work. However, I did add +1 to the number: given that this takes place over wifi, perhaps it isn't necessary.

It was possible for a few hours with Fring, but Skype and Fring had a falling out and now it's not possible.

Do we have any updates on the deal about the international SMS that is sent when FaceTime is used? Does it happen every time a facetime call is made, just when the phone is turned on, or just when you slide the slider to turn on facetime?

on O2 forums they are looking into it, and will most likely do a bulk refund to all affected people.
