What is it about these cars??? Im mad about them. Seen one pulling out of a drive near enough to where i live & i nearly crashed my own car from rubber-necking.
It was black with a thin red line along the sides, spotless, everbody looking at the thing. Lovely machine.

Looked a bit like this but the one i seen was even nicer.

Anybody here own one? Or know much about them?

    ^That looks fairly hideous imo...

And for the Capri, you need to have a radio that only plays 80's prog rock!!

My Dad had one as his first company car! Was only temporary while he was waiting on the Cavalier to be delivered, but was always the coolest car in the car park at football training.

Unfortunatley it was only the 1.6 Laser model, but it was a nice metallic grey colour. Wouldn't mind a well kept 3.0 model (and medallion and chest wig).

I would dearly love a Manta A myself.. Love those cars..

    Sadly , I had a 3.0 Mk 2 Capri...

I loved it. The burble from the twin exhausts was just wonderful

    However , it had a few ' issues '.

Push it hard on a damp road .... expect to be facing the on-coming traffic
Floor it away from the lights .... expect to be visiting the petrol pumps ( and bank ) .

Still ... I totally loved the car , was sad when I sold it .

    V6 Capri's were great. 4 pot versions weren't.

Absolutely love the Capri. At some point if I had the time I'd like to buy an old car to maintain/do up as a hobby then the Capri would be first on the list. The old man had 2 of them, he may have even had them at the same time.

Manta is also another favourite. My grandad when he was in his 70's bought one a new one. His excuse was that he needed something two door (as the front doors on a 2 door car are bigger) as he had a bad leg . The fact that the car was lower than a regular car wasn't a problem. He never used the fan or radio in any car he had.

Isn't that the same with most cars, the V6 is better than the 4-pot :D

My parent's neighbour back in Ireland has a Capri that he bought for relatively nothing. He spent days restoring it beautifully and it sits on the drive at night covered with a dust sheet, while his company Avensis sits in all weather without a dust sheet and parked across his drive in an effort to prevent the Capri being stolen :D

    Yep

I used to figure a burn from the lights cost me 50p ( and that was 20 years ago !)

    Great fun though !

My father was a ford dealer with the Capri was first announced ' The car we have always promised you ' was the tag line.

He used to say that any car that was faster than the first 3.0 l capri , you could buy a capri , and a house !! ( always the salesman :) )

    GREAT CAR

The Quattro was a totally different animal , and much more expensive. Remember the Capri was basically a souped up Cortina , which you could trace it's suspension etc back to the early 60s

i might be wrong, but europeons love them, as its the closest you can get to american muscle here?

the only reason i am attractive to these things is, that they remind me of old school american muscle car. :p

the classic ford fans should better answer this question, as i have zero knowladge on old fords :o.

The trouble was the Europeans used the 2.8 Cologne engine ( and I think the 2.3 version too , possibly even the v6 2.0 which I know they used to stick in the Euro Granada )

In the UK they used the WONDERFUL 3.0 engine , which just made a great sound. The 2.8 Capri that came late just didn't do the same thing.

There was a bored out 3.1S version I think ( open to correction by some Ford petrol heads )

wasnt there something like 1.6 aswell? I guess moust of people actually loved the looks of it.

p.s. i think that new one has nothing that made capri so popular... :o

Have you seen the ad on discovery channel before shows like wheeler dealers? It shows an impossibly clean workshop with an IMMACULATE chocalate brown metallic capri (mk1?) chrome etc. Unbelivable condition.

Engines ranged from the truly ashmatic 1.3 pushrod, through 1.6, 2.0, up to a rare 3.1 V6 Essex in the RS3100. The 3.0 was called an "Essex" and the 2.8 a "Cologne". Both were worthy enough with the earlier 3.0 sounding a bit better.

My earlier point about the V6's being good and the 4 pots not had more to do with the space available in the engine bay - it was huge.

p.s. We all know the best of the 4 pots (back then) was the 2.0 pinto, and that was best in an RS2000 Escort :D

Capri was launched in the 1960's, and the Audi Quattro in the 1980's. Not really comparable at all.

A friend of mine is addicted to them (and Mantas), think he has 3 or 4 of them :D

These are two of his, he has them for sale but won't let them go for anything less than what he reckons they are worth.

The Model the OP is referring to wasn't released until 1978. (Capri II 78')

But im not old enough to be choosy .. they both look cool ! :)

Mk1 facelift 3litre V6. Sorry can't find a color photo. It's blue and is at a fair few shows.

Concept of the Capri - long nose, front engine and rwd came from the 1960's. That was my point. It never chamged.

    1.3 - 1.6 Pushrod

    2.0 V4

    3.0 V6

    1.6 - 2.0 OHC

    2.3 V6

    2.8 V6

    3.1 V8

I think that was the order they went in..
Then you had the die hard power freaks that dumped rover 3.5 V8's into them

Yep, the Essex V4, as built in the same plant as their legendary V6.

Was the 2.0 pinto not a DOHC and the 1.6 X-Flow an OHC?

Jaysus the 1.3 engined version must have been a pig of a thing. 50bhp?

Such a small engine in fairly large car. No thanks.

What about the 1.6? Any good?

Nope. Pinto was a sohc, and all xflows were ohv.

To complicate things however the BDA engines were 16v dohc heads on top of an xflow bottom end, and the YB Cosworth engine was a 16v dohc head and a blower sat atop of a pinto.

p.s. The was also a later I4 2.0 engine which was dohc and 8v.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,181 ✭✭✭Davidth88

To me the only one worth having was the 3.0L

The 1.3 / 1.6 were very pedestrian . The 2.0 was driven by people who really wanted the 3.0L

    :)

    But then again I only ever owned a 3.0 ( I had a 2.0 L Cortina )

The keys were very ' unsafe ' my brother drove a Cortina , we often drove each others cars using our own keys !

A couple of years ago, and bearing in mind that I am a retired mechanic, I remember thinking to myself `Geez, if I got knocked down in a hit and run I would not be able to report the make of car that did so as they all seemed to be designed from the same drag co-efficient figure. That`s why the Capri is a head turner, though my favorite is another Ford, the Mk2 Cortina-the box or square one- put a set of spots and a racing stripe on one and you immediately transformed it into a rally type car. A Classic also.

The classic 1600E or 1600GT or the Lotus one

Very cool , when I was kid in school all the ' local lads' were driving these.

...but by today's standards what's the(well maintained) Capri like to drive ?

How many BHP in the 2.8 or 3.0 ?

They are ok. Well able to keep up with traffic. Suspension is live rear axle so a bit "lively" and the brakes aren't as good as modern cars.

Powerwise the Essex 3.0 was 138bhp and the 2.8 160bhp. Tickford/Turbo Technics blower conversions gave up to 230bhp.
