I think it deserves its own thread!

suspended due to darkness, final set tied at 59 games all..incredible..

    RECORDS:

Longest match ever: The Wimbledon 2010 first round match between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of June, 2010, currently at 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 59-59 in the fifth and final set, after 9hrs 58mins (In Progress). The fifth set, at over 6hrs 53mins, is also the longest set in history (In Progress). With the scores tied at 59-59 and light fading. The match was suspended at 21:12, for the finish of the match on a 3rd record-breaking day.

The fifth set of the Isner-Mahut match, now at over 6hrs 40mins qualifies as the longest continuously played segment of a tennis match in history (In Progress)

Longest play in a single day: The first 118 games of the fifth set of the 2010 Mahut-Isner match were played on its second day

Most games in match ever: The Wimbledon 2010 first-round match between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner

Many more records, i think isner has 95 aces so far, previous record was 51!

Stunning really. Must also be the longest amount of consecutive games without a break surely?

has anything like this ever been seen before, can it reach a point where the umpire or referee steps in and decide something like next game, or point wins, or first to 10 points, etc.

Don't they have to keep going until someone wins by 2 clear games???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

I think their strength & conditioning coaches will be looking for a raise. :D

Amazing stuff, fair play to both players. Astounding mental strength.

No they have to win by 2 games, so tomorrow if 1 of them wins the first 2 games and the score is 61-59 then its over.
That is if either of them can play tomorrow which i have my doubts about

they do, but neither of the two has got that lead hence it being at 59 all so far, thus leading to my question above

i understand that, but say for example it reaches 70 all, or 80 all, the match in therory, might never end

is there anything else in the rule book, apart from someone retiring

Re your question: I can't see that happening?? I think it will be the 2 game rule - no matter how long it takes???

The best match I have ever seen. Didn't see the final last year but saw highlights of it. If this match is anything to go by, Wimbledon is gonna be great this year. Anyone else think Federer is losing his touch?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,454 ✭✭✭mink_man

not one break of server in the final set, isner looked completely legless, barely leaving the ground on his serve yet kept holding it....

sure at 39 games all or that the commentators were commenting on isner lookin really tired and that was like 40 games ago! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,978 ✭✭✭445279.ie

When play was suspended Isner had 97 aces and Mahut had 95

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭StevoTG

Just incredible! How both guys could go that long without having a lapse and dropping serve is beyond belief.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭KrazeeEyezKilla

Will Isner even be able to play tomorrow? I heard one of the commentators saying that if it ended tonight the winner was due to play tomorrow which is hard to believe.

What time does it begin again at tomorrow? Crazy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,092 ✭✭✭CiaranMT

Mahut really should win it. I think he's lost his chance now though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

Stunning, it's hard to comprehend how incredible that is. Practically any record that relates to just 1 match has been shattered and I highly doubt will ever get broken.
Nothing will come close to that again in length I'd say

tuned in at 40-40 ... didnt bother with the germany/ghana match ... it was unreal .. its great to be involved in a bit of sporting history ... what time does it reconvene at tomorrow ... isner looked well bollo**d towards the end of play.

I liked the BBC World Cup highlights show "going to Wimbledon live" to catch up on this match...

Cue a shot of the moon in darkness, a rally and the score in the corner

    Mahut 152
    Isner 153

    :D

Incredible alright. Great spirit from both players and an incredible spectacle.

My parents and younger brother are at Wimbledon and my dad was caught on camera a few times during the latter stages of the match and my brother too I think!

I'm surprised Mahut was the one who wanted to call it a day, he looked by far the fresher. Isner also missed his doubles match.

Ya but Isners serve was still firing, and with the low light Mahut wouldnt have stood a chance against it.

It was the right call pulling the match until today, Isner looked like he was going to drop from exhaustion any mintue. But I have to say its one of the most incredible sporting achievments I have ever witnessed, I even turned off the world cup for it :D

I'll be watching the end of this today. Unreal :)

Looking forward to seeing how this finishes up. I think Mahut earned it that little bit more IMO. So they'll be on around 4ish you think?

Man those guys are gonna be wrecked when this is over! I'm not actually cheering for either but is it wrong of me to hope this keeps going!

there's only one wayt his can be settled, rock-paper-scissors over the net.....that's how they should solve all stalemates, including wars! there should be like legally binding agreements behind it and all, would make for some amount of tension! come on mahut though! dya see him diving for that shot last night, amazing!

unbelievable stuff - how did Isner keep holding his serve when he could barely walk. Mahut on the other hand looked like he had just strolled out of the dressing room. Incredibly Isner wanted to continue when they stopped it due to bad light (bad form from the crowd for booing Mahut when he asked for it to be stopped IMO).

Isner's performance reminded me of Chang's famous win over Lendl many years ago when Chang had to resort to serving underarm due to cramp.

    Saw this on the BBC:

From Ben in Notts via text: "Definition of optimism: scheduling a match on 18 after Isner and Mahut."

    :D

Odds on someone winning the first two games? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭WesternNight

Just waiting for them to come out on court now. I imagine there'll be some amount of noise when they do come out.

I hope it won't be a slap-dash ending. Although I wouldn't begrudge them a bit more recovery time. It would just be a massive anti-climax for everyone. I don't even mind who wins. They both deserve it at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭WesternNight

Oooh here they come! They're both able to walk, by the looks of it. Good sign!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

    Starting now 59-59

    Ace no. 99!

Cant view the game today so might be too late already, but watched too much of it last night. It is something they they stayed out too long, but it was in no way entertaining, or even great sport. Like two boxers that needed to win by knockout but hadnt the skills to do it, but had to keep stepping up when the bell rang. 2 break points in 100 games. Hoping for a quick death (not literally) today.

    Mahut's backhand is beautiful

I'm only listening to commentary but is Isner not moving too much. Content to play baseline?

Isner looks the more tired, but his serve has not let him down once in this match which makes it very hard to call
