Actress Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) will star opposite James Franco in 20th Century Fox’s Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes, a Fox rep confirmed to EW.com. Pinto will play a primatologist named Caroline, while Franco is playing a scientist. Set in present-day San Francisco, Rise of the Apes depicts how mankind’s experimentation with genetic engineering ultimately results in a war between humans and intelligent apes. John Lithgow has also joined the cast and will play Franco’s father. Apes, which is being directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), is scheduled for release on June 24, 2011.

I like James Franco he is a great actor but is there really a need a for another movie in this series :rolleyes:

It's not a bad cast. But I was really disappointed when they shelved the version that Scott Frank was working on called Caesar. It looked like it was going to be some awesome hard science fiction... but was proving a tad too dark for Fox.

every film after the 2nd one (excluding remake) was a prequel.

though I still have a very strong fondness for conquest of the planet apes, regardless of its cheap budget.

I wouldn't consider them to really be prequels.

The 3rd film involves time travel back to before the first 2 are set and the rest of the stories carry the story directly from there.

It's an overall storyline of a cyclical timeline. But the story runs from one film to the other so each one really is a sequel.

^^ This is a win for the film. Serkis is outstanding, even when he's not him. As in a CGI character. However, I will withhold judgement until seeing the film.

Fracno, Serkis and Lithgow are all quality actors. I wouldn't mind seeing this at all, despite how pointless it seems.

Loved the original series, but Burtons effort was a stinky banana. I'm optimistic about this though. It'd be nice to see another proper sci-fi, something with the intelligence of 'Moon'.

Brian Cox joins the cast, his role sounds interesting and kinda similar to that of William Stryker, who Cox incidently played in X2. I mean from a point of view that both characters seem to have a lack of concern for the subjects that are being experimented on. Hopefully he doesn't end up being a panto villain.

im not a huge apes fan but one or two of the films did appeal to me and this looks more like a straight reboot of the franchise more than anything else.

good cast too and like the concept.

sad i know but i cant help thinking of a more sinister "project x"



must say i do like the "the birds"-esque feel to some of those scene in the trailer too. just something really creepy about an ape just sitting at the end of your bed.

I loved the original planet of the apes; so crap, camp and 60's ish. The remake was utterly dreadful, I mean awe inspiringly bad with terrible acting, dysfunctional plotlines and absurd ape societies.

Hmmm it looks like it might be half-decent as a movie in its own right (within the "Science goes Wrong" mould), but I wonder if the "Planet of the Apes" moniker is going to be a millstone around it's neck.

And I don't just mean the Tim Burton movie; the 60s original was as much a post-apocalyptic, cold-war fable as anything else - we see how humanity fooks up its planet after nuclear war, "you fools, you blew it up!" etc. etc. - the presence of the apes was really just a macabre twist. So I don't see how a straight-faced prequel's going to bridge that gap & make it believable that Apes will somehow take over. Maybe I'm just thinking too hard about this

If it had just been called Rise of the Apes it would have been better, the memory of Tim Burtons godawful "reimagining" still lingers. appalling movie, only good thing about it was the makeup and Tim Roth. Oh and the main theme is fcuking awesome.

I think they should have held off on the "Planet Of..." Until about movie # 3. :Rise Of The Apes: would have been great, followed by "Battle Of The Apes" followed by "Planet Of..." (or some such)

As it stands I can't see how it ties in with the originals at all. With them the first & third (my personal favourite), were the most important as it closed plot holes etc & also gave credible stories to the other two (the second is best forgotten). I also liked Burtons as it's more true to the novel & stands alone as a single movie with no illusions of spinning off yet still able to.

It's a reboot that just takes the basic premise of (eventually) intelligent apes being the dominant creature. Other than that, nothing to do with the originals. Hope they at least got for a 15 cert though. I'm sick of PG & 12 rated movies that should be directed toward an older audience.

I'm not a huge fan of the Apes series in general but even I can see that this is simply a stand alone movie hoping that the franchise name will somehow help it out/they are trying to avoid complete plagiarism.

This is a movie about uber intelligent apes that rise up against their masters. It's Deep Blue Sea with primates. I guess that's really the only way an Apes origins movie could ever go but if that is the case then I'd rather have never seen it made.

Don't get me wrong, it looks good alright but really looks more like a piggy back on the Apes series rather than a continuation/reboot.

i dont really see why people are commenting about it having no real relation to the original series. the only real difference i see here from conquest of the planet of the apes is that of the origin of the apes intelligence

i dont think it would have been the best move to keep to the original story too strictly as they didnt really have the option of going with the causality loop angle. for one thing it would have required either another movie set in the future in order to set up one based in the present day/near future, or else had some relation to the burton version which was muck in almost everbodys opinion.

Its been a long time since I have seen the original series. But wasnt the revelation that the apes there evolved from present day humans? Therefore, what we see in this movie isnt in line with that as we see that present day apes get their intelligence from a super drug, rather than it happen through evolution...

It's creating a new origins movie, it doesn't tie in at all with the original.

Gonna put this in spoilers for those who haven't seen the originals (but should).

In the first film, the astraunouts arrive on the planet which they discover at the end to be earth of the future.

In the second folm, another ship is sent looking for the original crew, the less said about this movie, the better, it's the weakest of the series.

The third film has the original spaceship return to earth, water landed at a beach in Los Angeles & intercepted by the army, then the crew remove their helmets it turn out they are the three chimps Corneleous, Zira & Dr. Milo who have come back to earth of the past. This is critical for the film, because it is their child (C&Z's) Cesear, who will be born in this movie who is the origin of the ape uprising. This film was the cheapest to produce as it was shot in modern day & also grossed the highest.

The fourth & fifth establish the ape uprising & subsequent war which brings us neatly to the first movie again.

IMO the third film is the most enjoyable, stands alone & is possibly the most important one as it gives the five films their origin.

They possibly should have started with this film to reboot the series & then filmed them in the order of 3,4,5,1 (forget 2).

He looks very good. He's probably the main ape. By 'marauding apes' I meant the ones you see wrecking the city (mostly gorillas). They look a bit cartoony.

Hope its unfinished cgi, the gorilla jumping towards the helicopter looked a bit fake alright, although its Weta so they've had success with big cgi apes in the past :pac:

Better trailer than the 1st one but I'm underwhelmed with the CGI, I mean, they look good but the faces are still too cartoony.

Not really hyped about this film, to be honest. Not saying it'll be shìte but the marketing is doing nothing for me.

Honestly think this film looks beyond dreadful. Even the much heralded apes look pretty dodgy (in trailer one anyway). I'd be very surprised if this surprises :P
