Try a whey shake directly after you finish in the gym. The protein in the whey will go to help repair the muscles you've been working, so you should recover faster and get stronger. If you can't get whey, some from of bio-available protein and a small amount of carbs. The quick and dirty version is chocolate milk.

But if you are used to working out, then stop, then start again, you can expect a fair bit of aching the next day.
