Any way to speed up getting a PPS number?

I submitted the application form for my PPS number on the 27th last month, so now nearly 4 weeks has passed without any number being sent to me. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? What is considered "acceptable" time to process this application? I'll have difficulties making my salary meet my living costs…

I submitted the application form for my PPS number on the 27th last month, so now nearly 4 weeks has passed without any number being sent to me. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? What is considered "acceptable" time to process this application? I'll have difficulties making my salary meet my living costs until I can get my taxes sorted, could I apply for social security until they sort out my tax rate? I would appreciate any help at all.
