Supports for burning calf and shin pain?

The last while ive been getting really bad burning pain in my calfs and around the front of my shins after about 5 minutes of playing soccer. I went to a physio and he said that basically ive a muscle getting strained to much on the outside of my shins and thats what causes the burning and the pins and needles in my legs.

He said I suprisingly dont have flat feet but he recommended that I should try "orthoheel arch supports" and see if they help. A friend of mine who suffered from the same problem recommended insoles called "sorbothane insoles".

Now ive been into a few places to try and get these orthoheel arch supports and cant get them anywhere. One place said theyd get them in for me and ring me. Its been ages and no word from them.

I dont want to go shelling out money for wrong insoles so just wondering has anyone with my problem ever tried either of these brands? And is there any reliable online site to get them from?

Sounds more like shin splints and not stretching enough(let me guess you have only started the new season training), burning in calves usually is from not warmiing up and stretching properly.

I am starting back in 2 weeks so i will be expecting a bit of leg pain for the first week

Pins and needles could be from your boots being too small, i discovered that a few years ago :D

All from my own personal experience over the last few years.

But you said you went to a physio so must be different.

    Hi Darcha22

Can I respectfully request that you please refrain from offering atlternative diagnosis to that already provided by a qualified proffessional.

Joe123: Please follow the advice provided by your physio and ignore any and all advice received from a public internet forum. Even though the posters mean well thay are not qualified to diagnose your issue and also they can not physically examine you.

I have no idea where to get orthoheel products, however Elvery's used to sell the Sorbathane insoles. However you should check with your physio as to whether these would make a suitable subsitution before jumping an and buying them as they don't really provide arch support. They are more for cushioning AFAIK.

    Best Regards,

    M

    No bother

May i just add something as i reckon this thread will be closed.

When the OP does get back to training may i suggest that he warm up and stretch before exerting himself in trianing, its very important to stop straining muscles and causing injuries. A lot of people i play footy with only warm up when the manager tells them  and if its just to meet up for a game of ball off season there is rarely a warm up, i suggest warming up on your own if this is the case.

No I always make sure to stretch before any football I play. Its not the boots either ive been using the same ones for two years now! The physio had some proper term but he said basically the muscle on the outside of my shins was getting strained to much causing the blood flow in the leg to reduce.

roll calves and tibialis with foam roll or the stick and stretch both.

Joe, I have experienced this myself. There is generally an underlying problem that causes it. If your physio didn't give you a clear way to resolve it, Maybe you should get a second opinion, or even a third. Find a physio who has experience dealing with sports injuries, and has worked with sports teams. 3 physios told me my calves were just tight. And to keep stretching them. 3 years and alot of pain later I got it correctly diagnosed.....hopefully!
Alot of physios don't know their arse from their elbow and spend the day rubbing old ladys! Good physios are hard to find.
I paid alot of money for orthodics & calf supports, neither worked. Getting surgery on it tomorrow.
By the way, your physio should have been able to point you in the right direction to get your heel supports. Anytime I have needed supports(insoles, orthodics, thumb wrist, calve & shin splint etc) for injuries I have always got them through my physios.
I hope this doesn't breach boards guidelines.

Get a second opinion from the physio in the community centre in clondalkin village, he wont put you wrong. All the local teams, GAA, RUGBY etc use him a lot. few lads off my team used him last season as well.
