Hi all, I was wondering what the best type of exercise to lose weight and tone up would be without joining a gym? Would jogging for a half hour each evening be enough or would I need to be doing weights aswell? I really want to get some sort of a fitness/weight loss routine going but havn't the money to join a gym and I am at a loss where to begin. If anyone has any tips that would be great. I want to lose around a stone and a half. Thanks

    Hi There

The the standard first question to this type of post is what is your current diet like.

Can you give a detailed outline of a typical days food and liquid intake, include time, meal, food/liquid consumed.

    i.e. 07:30 Breakfast
20g oats, tbl spn mixed seeds, 6 raspberries, 3 strawberries, 200ml skimmed milk, mug of green tea.

    10:30 Morning snack....

You could lose weight by just sorting your diet out and eating slightly less calories then your body requires (around 350-500 less).

Exercise improves fitness and as it requires energy (calories) it can help with creating a calorie deficit which helps with weight loss.

Now if you just go jogging and you get you diet sorted and are eating less calories then your body requires, then you should lose weight at around 1 lb per week. Maybe slightly more some weeks and less on other weeks.

The thing here is that you end up with a runners physique. Stick thin, little in the way of muscle. If this is what you want, then just stick to running. However if you would like to build up a bit (kind of like a male gymnast) then you will need to be doing some kind of resistance training.

If you Google "Body Weight Training" you will get lost of ideas that you can do at home just using your body weight. Also Google "Ghetto Training" to get an idea as to how you can use what's around to get a good workout.

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot get into great shape without setting foot in a gym. Just needs commitment, a decent diet, consistency and a little imagination.

    Best Regards,

    M
