Help getting into shape...

I'm hoping some of the experts on this forum will be able to help me with a plan to get into shape.

I've been to some very well known personal trainers over the past 2 years so I have a reasonable idea what I should be doing.

My main problem is that I lack the determination and drive to go a step further and actually get my body fat below 10% and get the stomach fat off. I'm currently about 67-69kg, 5'9" and about 13% body fat. My stomach is about 19mm.

I've managed to get to my current stats above doing about 1 session a week and not eating as I should be (i.e. frecking high carb diet!).

Is there anything I can do to try and up my determination and actually go that step further? Plus do you have any suggestions what I should be doing to get my body fat down....

    Cheers

What do you mean by your stomach is 19mm?

As for determination, I guess there's all sorts of positive thinking stuff you could try, but at the end of the day, you're going to have to make a plan and make yourself stick to it. Just keep putting the work in, it gets easier as you go along.

As in 19mm fat? Maybe I have the wrong measurement - maybe it's 19%?

I suppose the problem is that I find it impossible to stick to a plan with work commitments. I suppose the first thing to do is make a plan and stick to it.

I guess you could set yourself lots of small goals. If your work schedule is too erratic to stick to a regular plan, you could at least make sure you're ticking off your goals at a reasonably constant rate.

I suppose what springs to mind is that you simply do not want it bad enough.

If you have a mortgage, 2 kids, travel out of ireland regualarly etc then I would say you might have a 'im very busy with work etc excuse' if not then you need to get up off your butt and stop making excuses.

Finally you say you have been to a number of well known trainers and all of said well known trainers i am sure have gotten brilliant results with lots of clients - why were you NOT one of them?

6 months from now you can be still seeking the a gem of wisdom or inspiration that is going to FINALLY get you 'motivated' or maybe you will learn from 100's of readers on this forum that said to themselves 'right enough excuses and if its got to be its up to me'.

No one can do it for you so decide now do you really want to make some serious progress or are you just asking?

The only place that determination is going to come from is within yourself. Ask yourself why you want "this" ?
You need to think of goals that matter to you & they will fire you up. Maybe set yourself a series of challenges or something?

    Hiya

My situation sounds a little familiar to yours; in the last two years I've lost 4 stone and kept it off; it wasn't easy but I wanted it so bad.

I'm now 9st 11lbs and have been for the last year, I'm currently trying to reach my target of 9stone.

I work out for an hour 5 days a week; I do have weeks where I don't want to exercise at all but its about finding a balance -

I take small steps and do things like when I lose a pound or two reward myself with a new top, I always calorie count during the week but at weekends I go out and drink etc... Also I make small goals, i.e, for my birthday I'll be looking great and buy a new dress... etc...

I also take pharmaton adn acai berry everyday and drink tons of water and drink pukka mint tea which keeps my tummy flat.

Everything is about making compromises with yourself and you have to find a routine where you are comfortable.

    Wish you the best!

From my unqualified understanding...if youre female (which I'm guessing you are) then being at 13% bodyfat is about as low as is recommended (correct me if I'm wrong, those in the know) and any less is considered "essential fat". A 5'9 woman at 10% BF to me sounds freekin scarey!
However, if youre male, and I hope you are with these aims, then i think its essential BF at about 4% (again could be wrong) and so work away!

I've just started a job demanding 14 hour days this week for the next 6 months and so have to stop training with my trainer and i am totally gutted by this I must admit. Feckin job! But theres the weekend! Get into the routine of training hard even if you can only fit it in at weekends and food wise, organize yourself! I was afraid i wouldnt be able to keep up my diet at work but always have an ounce of nuts in my pocket and a scoop of whey at hand etc. It can be done! Just decide if youre going to let work get the better of you or you get the better of it! Good luck!

The figures I seen for essential fat were 10-13% for females, 2-5% for males.
Top female athletes compete at 8-12%, considering the level visible fat on these women, and the OP's 1 session a week plus bad diet, I assume the OP is male.

19mm is the skinfold measurement on his/her stomach - that is then plugged into a formula to work out overall body fat with a number of other measurements. Sub 10mm on stomach or hips is fairly standard to aim for for male or female clients

Hi OP - I agree with Transforms first post above - how badly do you want to be under 10% bodyfat, and why exactly do you want to be?

what specifically are the problems (created by your work commitments) that make it difficult to establish a routine for yourself? Long / changeable working hours?/Travel?/ diffulty with regular eating routine?

I am in a similar vein to original poster. I'm up to my eyes in work at the moment and have found my weight has spiralled to 17 st. I am 5ft 9 male and would love to lose 3-4 stone. Have tried in the past and got down to 15 1/2 but put it all back on again. Very frustrated with myself. A lot of it is down to comfort eating. Hide it from my wife as well and always sneaking a chocolate bar or something sweet when I go to the shop. Hate my body and this is the first step on the way, hopefully. Am thinking of trying one of those Wii trainer things as i don't have the time to go to a personal trainer. Anyone had any success with those?

A Wii trainer will do nothing for you.
    Sort out your diet.
