From what I've read, NO. Special K has quite a bit of sugar in it. You'd be better off swapping it for eggs or porridge or Weetabix. Plenty of posts about Special K being crap if you search.

    No.

You should follow the advice that was given to you in May in the fitness forum.

on a scale of one to ten the special k diet is shit.

There is a special place in hell for the people who thought up Special K and marketed it as a healthy cereal which will help weight loss. It's high sugar crap. Seriously, read the nutrition panel, it has a staggering amount of sugar, and that's just the basic one. The new flavoured ones probably have even more.

You might as well eat a couple of jaffa cakes for two meals a day. If your calories are low enough, you may well lose weight, but it's a terrible way to do it. Nitritionally, there's very little difference between Special K and Jaffa Cakes.

The Special K diet? Are you serous or a shill?

Reminds me of special low calorie chocolate bars cadburies make. They are just normal bars but half the size and 90% of the price.

+1 just for the lol :D

But yeah, just take any crap food that you like, bundle it into a 250cal portion and then have that for breakfast and lunch and a healthy dinner and you'll lose fat, along with a good bit of muscle and be miserable and cranky and hungry etc.

I do know someone who lost 2 stone doing this, but good god there are much easier ways to lose weight than starving yourself of good quality protein and vitamins.

    mother of god noooo!

Any diet that advocates getting sugar levels up is total FAIL.

lOW gi , PLENTY of good fats and protein is the way to go

Is weetabix actually ok? I know we're supposed to have more protein but if it was a choice between brown toast and weetabix...?

Depending on the toast, I'd take the toast myself. Probably not a huge amount in it though.

There's another thread that says Weetabix/oatabix are okay. I find porridge too hard to eat in the warm weather, and wanted to stay away from bread - thought I was doin a good thing!

Try soaking some oatflakes in milk overnight, and eat them cold in the morning. Completely different texture, you wouldn't know it was the same cereal.

I remember doing the Special K diet. It's what actually kickstarted my weightloss. They actually use that word, it's meant to "kickstart" you into a more healthy regime. It actually did work for me, but I couldn't do it for more than two weeks because it was SO BORING. And the more I found out about it, the more I realised it was actually complete sugary crap! You'd be far better off eating a nice bowl of porridge with berries for breakfast and then a nice filling salad with some protein on the side for lunch rather than two bowls of Special K.

Ya it's mad I went a bit crazy on the special K years back and man it gets so sickening after a while when you're eating it regularly. I still feel a bit wierd in my stomach when I see a box of it to this day. The idea of the special K diet is so evil, I can't belive it's even legal to promote it!

weetabix is better than special K, many are surprised as weetabix is sort of marketed towards kids, so you expect it to be sugary crap, and then the way special K is marketed you expect it to be low in sugar.

    weetabix http://www.weetabix.co.uk/brands/weetabix/weetabix/
Wholegrain Wheat (95%), Malted Barley Extract, Sugar, Salt, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid.
    4.4% sugar 338kcal per 100g

    special k http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/specialk/cereal/special_k.aspx
Rice, Wheat (Wholewheat, Wheat Flour), Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Defatted Wheatgerm, Dried Skimmed Milk, Salt, Barley Malt Flavouring, Vitamin C, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.
    17% sugar and 379kcal per 100g

The other advantage of weetabix is that they are defined portions, what the side of the box says is what you actually get, while all other "loose" cereals greatly underestimate the typical portion size that people really pour out -so they appear to be low in calories.

bran flakes are still top of my hit list, 22% sugar, I expect very few people who eat them know this even though it is right there on the box.

Some of those sugars will be naturally occurring in the grains too.

I tried it a few years back, when the weight first started creeping on. To this day, just looking at the box in the supermarket turns my stomach! I managed to do the 2 bowls for 2 weeks or whatever it was and I lost absolutely nothing from what I remember. The stuff is packed with cráp though, ugh!
The best 'diet' is not a diet, its an education in food and an introduction to exercise. I've tried a lot of things over the years to lose the weight I put on. Healthy eating and exercise is the only thing that has taken it off.

All this talk of special K is making me want special K. I don't even really like the stuff.

Hey guys. I did it for a week last summer and lost my appetite. I had a bad taste at the back of my mouth and couldnt eat as much as i had been and lost a little bit.
But im worried now about the sugar.

    How about:

    Drink: Water only (love it)

    Breakfast: Pooched Egg

Lunch: Tin of Tuna without oil

Dinner : Fish/Chicken - minus potato, lots of veg

How about that? Along with one and half hour walking/jogging in morning and evening?

Will i reach my target? Or should i finish the special k thing??:confused::confused:

Me too! Now it has a naughty allure around it, although from my recollections it tastes 'off' or something, there's a weird aftertaste to it.

You should definitely stop the special K but you need to add more food to that diet, a poached egg and a tin of tuna is probably less than 200 calories, its just too big of a deficit its not good for you and will actually impede your weight loss.

Hey just reading your thread! I tried the special k a few years back and put on weight! :S my body went into shock mode or something, plus it really tasted sugary. my mother knows on my diet and she bought me two boxes of special k, i had some for about 3days and then gave the rest away.. too gross, not filling at all and i was starving by 11. I lost my first two stone by eating omeletes for breakfast, kept me so full, 3 eggs, and onions and mushrooms in low fat spray. Lunch you could have baked potato with small portion of beans and dinner maybe lean chicken with veg, include loads of strawberries and bananas helps if u have a sweet tooth!! goodluck :)
