Can you overdo it on the fruit and veg?

I´m not trying to loose weight (but don´t want to gain weight either) but I am trying to stay healthy since I quit the smokes almost 5 months ago but I´m wondering am I eating too much fruit n veg? Is there such a thing? Someone told me it´s possible to eat too much fruit and veg. I live in Spain and the fruit is so delicious that I can´t help myself and I try and go for that instead of sweets:

Today would be a typical day of my fruit and veg consumption recently:

    3 kiwis
    3 peaches
    1 nectarine
    half a kilo of cherries
    half a kilo of strawberries
quarter of a kilo of French Beans
    two portions of spinach
    Portion of caulifower

    Am I overdoing it?

    What else are you eating?

On the face of it, it looks a like a lot of fruit, but if it mixes in well with the rest of your diet, it's not a problem.

For what it's worth, I just added that all up, and it adds up to 1051 calories, 38g of protein, 6g of fat, 235g of carbs and 56g of fiber.

It's always possible to overdo it on ANYTHING.
With fruit, if you are eating too much and trying to lose weight then you can be doing yourself a mischief. Fruit sugars are natural sugars...but sugars nonetheless.

Also if you have dental problems then too much fruit can cause problems unless you are really taking very good care of your teeth.

Other than that it's not a big deal imo.

    Holy sheeite....really?

Okay I´ll have to cut back. Fruit is not my friend after all or at least the amount I consume. I thought you could eat as much as you want.

    Today I ate:

Breakie: Two slices of toast with a boiled egg and a cup of tea

Dinner: Fillet of salmon (wild) grilled.

Pre-bedtime snack: 2 slices of toast (love my toast)

Plus all that fruit and veg.

Oh had about 3 cups of tea today.

Calculated my recommended calorie consumption...it´s about 1600

So should just stick to the 5 portions then should I?

Sorry just to add that normally I´d have lunch but I woke up late toady so had brunch instead. I´d normally have beans on toast or a sardine and tomato sandwich.

Well, the fruit is way better than that four slices of bread. The egg and salmon are good, you definitely need the protein and fat.

That is an awful lot of fruit. Don't get me wrong you're getting good nutrients with that but also a lot of fructose.

Fructose is a special kind of sugar that can't be used directly for energy, it has to be stored as fat first. It also never sets off a signal to stop eating like other carbs, fats and proteins do, namely by increasing the hormone Leptin.

It's in the interest of a plant to make you eat as much of it's fruit as possible, hence why it's so easy to overeat.

I have absolutely no willpower around cherries myself. None. I have to buy small portions at a time or stick to lower sugar fruits like apples, strawberries and raspberries.

+1 to the above. Just try swapping some of the higher sugar fruit for veg/protein/good fats.

BTW - i have 1.75 kilos of cranberries if ya want them. No matter what i do ith them i just can't make them palatable:mad::D

Had a reread of my fruit intake yesterday. It is quite a lot isn´t it? Honestly, I didn´t realise the calorie content was so high and of course my teeth! I want to keep my teeth. Haha. Okay, just had the one kiwi this morning (I would have normally consumed about 5 pieces by now).

I´m going to swap my toast in the morning for some porridge cooked with water and some honey and almonds and swap the fruit for more veg. Try and keep it down to 5 or 6 portions a day (of fruit and veg).

Thanks for the advice! Lucky I asked because I genuinely thought you could eat as much as you liked :-/ Silly me!

My grandad took up eating loads of fruit when he gave up smoking in his 70's he put on quite a lot of weight very quickly and he went from being slim to being quite pudgy.

Yeah I guess I´ve been eating fruit as a replacement for the smokes. Just something to munch on when the cravings kick in and of course smoking suppresses your hunger so I´d find myself being hungrier now than before. Better than digging into the buns though, I guess and I´d rather me a little pudgy than wheezy.

I eat a lot of fruit too, but for me it keeps me from caving and going buying munchies so it's worth it. It's not ideal but if it stops you eating a mars bar or having a fag just eat the kiwi! ;)

For sure Fruit>>>>Junk food, but do you ever eat 2 kilos of fruit in a day? I like my fruit but my pancreas aches even thinking about eating that much!

Lol! :D I'm not sure how much I eat in terms of weight but I'd sure I've at least come close in the past. I don't know maybe it's the carb junkie in me but I really love having lots of fruit in my diet and I feel much better than when I try and keep them lower for some reason. I figure if fruits my vice then I'm doing ok and it definately keeps me from wanting processed sugars, I know it's not healthy to overdo it though but it could be worse :p

OT but strawberries and double whipped cream FTW. Currently keeping my hunger at bay :)

Okay today I´ve only had a kiwi and a peach so far and I´ll have my other 3 or 4 portions later. At this stage of the day I would have eaten the bulk of my million kilos of fruit....is it just in my head or is there a reason why I´m feeling less energetic than I normally would? I went to bed as normal last night, didn´t have a crazy weekend, got up as normal, had my porridge, went to work (short day) and I was having difficulty staying awake about 1pm. This never happens. Am I having fruit withdrawals or a come down from all that fructose?

Well eileen added up the calories from the fruit earlier and if you just take all those calories out and put nothing in their place you will have a lot less energy to work with. I don't know how much of a sugar rush fruit provides but just from a calorific intake point of view I think its not surprising that you would feel this way until you add something else into your diet to make up the calories (not necessarily the same amount of calories though, but that depends on whether you're worried about gaining weight, etc).

I imagine its a shock to your body not getting as much sugar as its used to. Are you subbing the fruit you had for a handful of nuts/other snacks? If you are going from eating all that fruit to not eating it and not replacing it you might be a bit low on calories or something and so might just need to eat something.

Otherwiae give your body a few days to adjust to the sugar withdrawl

EDIT: Brian got there seconds before me *snap*

Any change of diet can make you feel different. Even thinking about a change of diet can do it.

Slightly off topic, I was cycling in dim light the other evening, and I felt my back wheel puncturig. I kept cycling, hoping to get there before my tyre deflated completely on a narrow country road. As I went, I could feel it get flatter and flatter, and I could feel the rims hitting the road, and then I felt a spoke break. Finally got to my destination and took a good look at my bike. It was pristine. No broken spokes, no damaged rim, no flat tyre, no puncture.

Once I got the idea of a puncture into my head, my mind supplied all the feelings you'd expect with a puncture.

further off topic but if a spoke broke I imagine it would stab you soon enough, or get in the chain or something....

No, it makes your wheel wobble, and eventually can make it break.

I was getting a bit off-topic about the tricks the mind can play on you. If you think you might have less energy, you can bet you will.

Well to be honest I didn´t know the calories would add up to that much and what I ate besides from the fruit would almost have made up my quota of calories for the day anyway, so I needed to cut the fruit out. I never actually included my fruit as part of calorie count because I thought the calorie content of fruit was negligible. I know better now.

I´m having porridge with almonds and honey in the morning instead of my usual toast and tea so calorie-wise I should be alright.

Hahaha yeah I was...but I´ve always been, eh, very "regular".
