Anyone any experience of these guys?
Been onto their website, seem to have a few franchise options. Letterkenny seems to have an operating health club whilst wexford has a ladies only.
6 week money back guarantee? sounds too good to be true.

I'm waiting to see what happens with Greystones JS before joining a gym again - rumours abound saying its closing but its still open, or was 2 weeks ago. Some reports say its the only JS closing due to rent demands?

JS were taken over by Energie. Greystones closed. The Energie guys couldnt get a deal on the lease I heard so they let that one go. Energie have clubs all over the Uk and Ireland. They are a franchise but all the clubs in Dublin have one owner. They have others in North and a few outside Leinster.

JS were really really bad with their contracts, it was very hard to finish a contract.
The gyms in Clarendon St and Ballbridge are nice, (~ clarendon got a refurbrishment in December), just watch what you sign up for.
Also I found the classes a bit too easy

Thats really down to the individual taking the class as you get out what you put into it & then the instructor teaching the class! Look out for the new Energie classes starting in the next few months, you'll be suprised at how hard they'll be.....(repeat)if the instructors run them the way they've been thought & the individual pushed themselves(repeat)

I asked them(energie) for a years membership price in December, they sent me the "free until 2011" deal, i asked again and the manager sent me the same reply, the third time i asked for a price the manager told me to come down avail of the deal they had and then see if i want to join for the year in 2011.

I asked 3 times for a price and they just refused to give it to me, so i replied "its ok i will just join ben dunne" and the manager then slated Ben dunne, saying it hadnt got swimming pool, beauty stuff etc and that it was a badly run gym, bear in mind i had not said which one i was gonna join, Carlisle if i remember has all of those things and i know several people who go to it and have had no problems with how its run.

How hard would have been to say, Hi heres the price but you can get this deal until 2011 and then in 2011 the price is this...

So to end the story, i didnt join carlisle, i joined Lucan BD fitness instead(i cant swim so dont need the pool) Joined 1st Jan for €100 for the year and im very happy with it. Can be a bit busy some evenings but cant complain for the price.

That response is typical in the industry. The reason they do it is they have umpteen different memberships so three months, 6 months, one year, family, student, off peak and they ask you in so they can gear the membership to suit you. They also want to get you in to show you the club. Theres not much point joining a club just going on price if the place is a dump full of nice bouncers debt collectors and ex spetsnaz special forces. Remember the story about the Viper being shot on his way out of the car park at Ben Dunnes. I wouldnt join for €50 if Im working out next to that lot ?

HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR ON ABOUT MATE, im guessing you work for energie.

I would always base things on value for money, not on crime that happend in the area etc, if thats the case sure everyone would just leave Ireland LOL.

Havent a clue what €50 your talking about.

Whats the point of going to have a look and then be told its 600 quid a year membership.

The reason they dont tell you is they dont have a fixed price, same as jackie skelly did. wonder why Energie dont have prices up on the website

And i didnt join the KCR one, based on price and the fact i dont need a swimming pool.

And another point, you must have serious social issues if you are worried about working out beside certain types of people, not to mention slighlty racist. Im sure all the eastern european customers woudl love to see your stance on what you think of them and they are obviously not welcome at energie.

    to quote you:
"place is a dump full of nice bouncers debt collectors and ex spetsnaz special forces"

Do you base your perception of people based on where they work or have worked or where they are from you have issues mate and are very narrow minded.

Ben Dunne in Lucan is clean, brand new, very clean and anyone who trains there, well, they go there to train, i havent complied a list of their occupations yet but i will make sure i do straight away.

Imagine going to the same gym as a bouncer or a polish guy, madness!!

Bit sad that an energie employee has to slate other places once again, now publicly to try get business.

If a gym doesn't put its prices on its website or at least tells you its prices over the phone you can safely assume that it has something to hide. Amazing that people even bother to show up to view a gym without being told the price first - they wouldn't really do that with any other product or service.

I know what idiot would do that.

If you are going to buy a car and you have €5000 to spend, would soemone go viewing a ferrari or a brand new car, i doubt it, unless they were completly thick.

The response above is very similar to the one i got when i tried to get a price, to be honest if thats the view of the gym i think people should steer well clear. especially if you have a certian occupation or are from a diff country as you can imagine the welcome you would get.

    Shocking stuff!

I love when people use 'mate' in their posts- really adds to the friendly ethos on this forum!

The reason gyms don't give out prices is because the price is only part of what the gym is about. Anyone who joins a gym based on price alone is the silly one IMO. Are classes, instruction, swimming, towels, lockers, parking, cleanliness, service and ethos not important factors in choosing a club????

Are classes, NO wouldnt use them
    instruction, NO dont need it
    swimming, NO cant swim
    towels, NO, use my own
lockers, YES they have them at my gym
    parking, YES have that too
    cleanliness, YES very clean
service and ethos YES no problems at all
not important factors in choosing a club????

so BASED on that i got me a grand bargain for €100 for the year.
Paying 600 quid a year for a gym is pretty stupid if you can get the same for cheaper. And i said i base it on VALUE FOR MONEY not price, re-read my post

use energie in navan and swords - they've really improved the places since they took over.

Got in cages and bench press and greater selection of Dbs and plates.

I'd give my right ball to be ex spetsnaz.......

That's a red herring, nobody joins a gym on price ALONE - once they tell you how much it costs you still go to have a look before you decide whether to sign up. Not sure why you keep making excuses for what's just greed and unprofessionalism. Any gym in the US and most other places that refused to publish its prices would be laughed out of existence.

I understand that you are on a crusade against gyms as it's the only time you offer input into this forum. If you'd ever read any ihrsa publications you'd know that what you said was wrong.
Anyway, I'm not going to change your mind on this

Maybe that's because it's a forum about gyms :) No point arguing the point, just check a few random sites of US gyms and you will find that almost all of them post their prices on their websites.

Posting up some basic prices isn't too much to ask.
Expecting people to arrive in person so they can be subjected to sales BS is too much to ask.

The one in Letterkenny used to be the Attiva franchise. Attiva went bust and about a year ago they joined the Energie franchise. They seem to offer some pretty good membership offers, and in the case of the Letterkenny gym they have moved in more free weights equipment. However I think that was down to a staff member pushing for it as members were leaving to go to gyms with proper equipment. Depends what you are looking for really. I go to another gym in town that isnt as flashy but has some really good free weights equipment.

I joined the Jackie Skelly Gym in Ballsbridge in August 2010 on what was packaged and sold as a four month gym membership. I clearly stated at the time that I only wanted a short term membership as I would not have time to use it in the later months of the year.

In April 2010, I enquired about new offers. In the course of this, I discovered my original membership had still not been cancelled despite the four month period having long elapsed and my not having being there in months. I had assumed that as per Sale of Goods and Services Act 1980 services would be sold as packaged - four months = four months.

The gym both verbally and in writing stated they were well within their rights to retain this cash (for nothing) as I did sign a contract and in this it did state cancellation was required in writing. I disputed this as the relevant fee was €70 per month and if I required long term membership I would have gone with the cheaper option. The gym said it was within their rights. The only compensation they offered was a six week programme worth a fraction of the money.

I declined and wrote to them the next day asking again for my money to be refunded and any further payments cancelled immediately. This did not happen and the last payment went out on the 2 June. I have written again to them. I have now paid €700 for a purported short term gym membership option that I have not used, (more than a yearly membership), this same short term option requires 28 days cancellation in writing and the cancellation in writing itself appears to count to nothing.

Needless to say I am very disappointed. While I accept I should have paid more attention to the fine print, I will now have to take my case to the Small Claims Court.

Please warn your viewers so that this doesn't happen again to them. I know times are hard but this really is another rip-off.

They were in their right to charge you as the contract turns to a rolling monthly contract after the minimum term is completed. The 4 month contract means that if could quit after 4 months without penalty.

Don't sign minimum term contracts without reading them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 catherine healy

Maybe I should have read the written contract rather than relying on their word, but since my recent 'formal' cancellation in April, they are still deducting money for a direct debit in June....

I looked up some UK sites and apparently there are several ongoing instances of this in Energie there.. deducting payments after cancellation has been formally requested..

catherine, you've made your point. If you post about this gym again you'll be banned off the forum.
