I've been hearing about this for years.

Makes a lot of damned sense, tbph.
The US government want to stop TRUTH from leaking out to the public. They’re afraid of Wikileaks, Infowars, Prisonplanet, Boards.ie etc, etc.
    Ah Pfft.

Im sure theyre more concerned that hackers/computer technicians have demonstratively been able to access US Power Stations over IP and cause real world damage. In the experiment, a hacker took a turbine's regulator sensor offline and it in turn caused the turbine to burn itself out.

Well it is their internet, they can do what they want with it.

Surely this proposal would simply lead to other countries getting together and building a "second" internet

Just like the EU Russia and several other countries want to do with GPS

I'm with Eircom so I don't mind if Barrack takes it tbh!

I thought no one controlled the internet. Thats a wiki fact.

They’re afraid of the slaves waking up.

    Well that's just silly.

If the slaves are asleep, how can they do the master's bidding?

    Shenanigans!

Why would he be allowed have a kill switch for the entire internet? Would it not make sense if he had control over access in America?

I don't wanna be in the middle of jerking of to watching some porn documentary online and have it shut off because Obama got a bit edgy.

    Its an idiotic proposal.

Imagine if in wartime Britain Churchill decided the existing blackout measures were inadequate to protect against air-raids and ordered the cutting off of electricity supplies to entire cities ?

The federal government would have “absolute power” to shut down the Internet under the terms of a new US Senate bill being pushed by Joe Lieberman, legislation which would hand President Obama a figurative “kill switch” to seize control of the world wide web in response to a Homeland Security directive.

What makes them think they can turn off the World Wide Web. F*ckin Americans.

I think it means turning it off in the U.S, not the whole world.

I thought the whole point of the web was that it was diffuse, numerous server nodes, ability to re route around damaged sectors etc?
So sure, they can turn off the web in the States, but afaik not all world traffic is diverted through US property so I'm not sure how this would effect me emailing my cousin in France. Sure, might slow the rest of the world down as admins or whoever reroute around long used US terminals but it'd hardly "kill" the internet.

It's not so much Obama I'd be worried about. Moreso future US presidents who could be a lot worse.

If he deleted the internet, the porn industry would turn into a lobby group. You'd wind up with either a swing vote or a hung parliament.

I suppose the act would have control over the root routers over there. The routers here could have their ios and the relative ip routes changed so they wouldnt be accessing any servers in the states.

Exactly; he could shut off american webservers and american access (at most). That said, without without american webservers the internet would be fairly boring i'd say.

It's kind of like the kid who owns the football. No one voted him to be the King who get's to decide when it's game over but no one else bothered to bring their own football so they just have to STFU and deal with it.

Knock off all the domain name servers. Force ISP's to shut down.
