Toy Story 3

On my 12th Birthday, I went to the cinema to see 'Toy Story'. Needless to say, like everyone else, I was absolutely blown away! Almost 15 years later, I sat in an IMAX theatre waiting to see 'Toy Story 3' last night.

When it was announced, I was simultaneously pumped and excited - yet worried that'll ruin my fond memories of the series.

I shouldn't have worried.. it was absolutely superb. Funny, touching, gut-busting funny and laced full of humour that appeals to both kids and adults. Can't wait to see it again and pick up the Blu-ray. I saw it in 3D but to be honest, it didn't add a whole lot to it.

The Michael Keaton voiced Ken doll steals the show, but there are plenty of memorable characters in there.

Pixar / Toy Story fans shouldn't worry - this will make your Summer / year!

The reviews are amazing and the film would have a 100% positive rating on rotten tomatoes if it wasn't for the prick that is Armond White, his review appears to have been written specifically to show how different he is. A quick look through his other reviews shows that he generally goes the opposite of every other critic out there, he gave negative reviews to the Dark Knight, Up, Wall-E, In the Loop, etc, etc and then gives generally hated films such as Jonah Hex positive reviews while every other critic in the world is taking it apart.

I know it's only a month this time but I really don't like the way Pixar stagger their movie releases.

This is the first time in 4 years that I've had to wait that little bit longer having watched the last 3 Pixar movies in Asia.

    Not Impressed. :(

Basquille just a quick question for you. What were the 3D effects like?

The reviews are justified.. it feels incredibly fresh, funny and was more enjoyable than I had hoped.

rednik - not massively impressive to be honest. It won't take away from your enjoyment but it won't enhance it a whole lot either. But it looked superbly clear and crisp on an IMAX screen.

Jesus this guy never fails, un-****ing-believable. Looking forward to seeing Toy Story 3, I was almost sure that they'd fail but I'm blown away by the reviews.

Damn you basquille, never have I regretted living outside the US as much as the month between Toy Story 3 being released here and over there :(

I greatly anticipate this film, Toy Story is the film I credit with getting me interested in all things moving image, so I am absurdly excited.

Has there ever been a perfect trilogy before? It seems like every trilogy has one entry that some don't enjoy, like Return of the Jedi (which I love) and Superman 3 (which isn't so good).

The Three Colours trilogy, Leone's 'Man with no Name' films, Back to the Future (anyone who says 3 is bad is wrong :p), Lord of the Rings (although the ending drags on a wee bit, not to dismiss the accomplishments of the rest of Return of the King) and Bergman's 'Silence of God' trilogy (well, three thematically linked films :pac:) would spring to mind as trilogies where all the films are pretty much equally good. I sincerely hope Toy Story 3 will join the ranks, and early evidence suggests it will :)

Went to see it last night!

    Basquille, you're perfectly right!

This film still holds the magic it commanded with the other two films. Sitting in the IMAX theatre last night, I was worried that it would be a let down.
I shouldn't have worried as it was amazing. It had everything a film should have, comedy, romance, superb acting, well voicing, and the rest that Toy Story should have.

The Pixar film beforehand was amazing too, although, I'm only remembering it now. :P

Basquille, you're right too on the 3D side of it too. The 3D effects add more the the previews more so than Toy Story itself. I took off my glasses for a while every so often to check was it 3D I was watching.
Although, it is far more crisp and clear than the normal.

glad to hear that this is getting great reviews. tbh, I didn't really have many doubts that they would deliver a great film. The quality of Pixar films is fairly consistent, taking a slight dip with Cars, but pretty much releasing a constant stream of hits.
To think a few years ago Toy Story 3 was gonna be a direct to dvd non-pixar sequel!

Went to see it on Friday as well, though not in IMAX. Tbh I wasn't as blown away as some people by either of the first two films in the trilogy, but this was amazing - so much fun, funny, touching, a little dark in places. There is pretty much no reason not to go see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

Thought it was fine...not blown away though. Lacked the heart of the first two films and had a slight issue of there being too much of a cast when the prior two films focused primarily on one or two characters (toy story was about buzz and woody and toy story 2 was about woody) and some plot devices were borderline parody of the franchise. But it had a very strong final scene and the humour was very good.

When I was a kid it was my favourite animation film.. Now I have both on Blu Ray and I finally got a Woody doll as one of my "The Leaving Cert Is Over" presents lol.

I can't wait for this. Pixar never fail to make a classic. Or reach over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes :p

Just back from seeing this,I thought it was very good and was dark in some places but overall think it ended perfectly.Didnt think the 3d was that impressive but as one poster said it doesnt take anytihng away from the movie.

I was suprised at how dark it was alright... well, it was one scene specifically!

I won't mention the one scene in particular but everyone who has seen it knows THAT exact scene.

I got the IFI listings for next month in the post yesterday, and I got uber excited when it said there's a screening of Toy Story 3 on July 10th as part of the family festival. Not only that, but it's free, and the director will be in attendance  Tickets only collectible at the box office though.

Went into the IFI today to see if I could get some, already sold out :( Crushing disappointment.

Seen this myself and i have to say i thought it was great.

good place to leave the series.

as others have said surprisingly dark in places which just illustrates what good story tellers the pixas guys are. i reckon adults will get more out of this than the kids.

just so many little knowing jokes in there. barbie and ken was great.

    :)

When I first heard Toy Story 3 announced, my initial excitement was dampened when I heard Pixar weren't going to be involved. Disney themselves would be making the film, about Buzz Lightyear being recalled to a factory in Taiwan. Strange idea, but it could of worked. Pixar obviously thought it wouldn't though, and decided to take over production themselves. This, thankfully, was the right decision.

It's important to stress how much I love Toy Story 1 and 2. They are, in my opinion, close to perfect. I distinctly remember standing at the ticket booth in the now closed Bray Royal Cinema trying to persuade my brother to go to see it instead of some other kids film that was on at the time. When it was released on VHS, I watched it obsessively. My Buzz Lightyear toy was my favourite of all my possessions. The sequel was a joy, a natural continuation of the themes, ideas and characters. I had the movie games on Mega Drive and PS1. In short, I loved Toy Story.

The big question I had was whether Toy Story 3 would be redundant. The first sequel was the rarest of things, a follow up that seemed to have every right to exist, and some would surely argue was in fact better than the first. It is with a great sigh of relief that I've decided that Toy Story 3 stands side to side with its two predecessors. It feels almost completely necessary.

It opens with a sequence that echoes the beginning of the first film, albeit with a bigger budget and better technology.
There's a dinosaur that eats forcefield dogs. Mr. Potato Head saying 'money money money'. There's cloud wallpaper. There's Randy Newman.
It opens in a way that pulls you back to the cinema 15 years ago. It's great.

I won't go too much into the plot, but basically it features Buzz, Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, Hamm, Rex and all the others dealing with Andy moving to college. It's a film about growing up. Andy is grown up, he doesn't need toys anymore. The toys themselves need to grow up and move on too.

The basic themes are what make this film seem so very fresh and necessary. Rarely have I seen such a moving film. It's the kind of film that kids will clearly like, but this is a film that will have much more resonance who watched Toy Story when they were much younger. We know these characters so well, and seeing them come to terms with Andy - and themselves - moving on is extremely poignant. There's a brief mention at the start of
how Bo Peep has been given away
. Woody's reaction says it all, and it's a surprisingly effective moment. Nothing can prepare you, though, for the film's emotional climax,
the spectacularly moving sequence in the furnace, during which none of the characters utter a single word. They just hold hands,
and it's a moment of genuine intensity. It's quite simply the most emotionally affecting scene I've seen in years. This isn't hyperbole: the final act is an absolutely masterpiece of storytelling.

Not that Toy Story 3 is always serious and emotional. It's very, very funny and exciting too. The new characters are extremely welcome -
Lotso is this film's Stinky Pete, and a welcome villain to contrast with Woody and co. The bit players from the Chatter Telephone to Big Baby to Mr Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton!)
all sparkle with life and stunning, endlessly charming animation. Plus, there's a
    Totoro
occasionally grinning devilishly in the background. It's full of detail and energy. The laughs are plentiful. Ken and Barbie's ludicrous romance is comic gold, and jokes such as a Spanish language Buzz work much better than they should. The pop-culture obsessed (not that there aren't a few funny cultural references here too) likes of Shrek could learn a thing or two. There's loads of action to - a plethora of imaginative, exciting set pieces to go alongside the jokes and character drama.

All in all, this film is a joy. It's like spending time with old friends again - Woody, Jessie, Buzz, Rex and all the others get the send off they deserve. It's a natural conclusion, and when it ends
with images of clouds (just like how the first started in Andy's room) it genuinely feel like Andy and his toy's story has been told
. There is little need for Toy Story 4, although knowing those bastards at Pixar they'll only do it if they once again find an entirely valid reason to do so.

This is a film for grown ups about growing up, and a joyous celebration of imagination for a younger audience. The 3D is redundant, and some of the characters are perhaps left on the back burner during a busy middle act. Plus, y'know, it probably promotes consumption and consumerism if you're feeling cynical. This doesn't matter in the slightest - Toy Story 3 is a masterpiece, Pixar once again proving themselves to be the masters of mature, imaginative animation. This is a film, that most importantly of all, has heart. If it doesn't tug at the heart strings, fair enough. But as someone who has sat in a cinema in 1995, 1999 and 2010, for me this is as good as cinema gets.

I want to go see it in 2D.

The 3D really adds nothing to it and you loose so much of the colour to boot.

The Night and Day short made excellent use of 3D though.

Funny enough.. this is the first Pixar short I *didn't* really enjoy!

It started off well.. but just descended into far too much happening too quickly.

It wasn't particularly endearing or funny.. but what followed it made up for it.

Ah yes. Wasn't great in that respect. But it was a very interesting use of 3D.

Totally agree about the colour issue, I find 3-D a little bit pointless, I mean it's cool and all but after 2 mins I just want to concentrate on the story and it ends up being distracting

    Plus the glasses look ridiculous:)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,020 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Night & Day seemed to understand what 3D was good for - depth. It felt like there was stuff going on inside those characters. It was breezy fun, like most of Pixar's shorts. Not as good as Boundin' or anything, but clever and entertaining.

3D in the film, tbh, did nothing at all for me. There was a moment when I realised I hadn't noticed anything distinctly three dimensional about it, and took of my glasses to confirm that it was indeed blurry. But yeah, adds nothing at all (surprise surprise), and only re-affirms some of the flaws of 3D, such as poor lighting and lack of focus when moving.
