Long story short, going to Belfast tonight from Dublin, three people in a two seater van, so one might have to go in the back.

Does anyone actually get stopped and checked? And what happens if you're caught?

    you're executed by firing squad

They can stop you for whatever reason and look in the back if they like. You're not covered on your insurance so i wouldnt risk it. You'll get a fine i'd say if you were caught.

I'd be more concerned with what would happen to the poor unfortunate in the back if you had a crash, or even had to brake really suddenly rather than technicalities TBH.

Get the person in the back to act confused... acting as though he thinks he's on a bus.

Just play it cool if you're stopped and tell them you were just going over the border for some french fries and gravy

Only if you fail to stop at a Nordie checkpoint.

You might be stopped by customs on the way back though, they were doing random stops to curtail the booze buying up there.

Just tie him down in the back of the van, so if the Guards do check you can say you did your best to secure him and prevent injury.
Or roll him up in a carpet before placing him in the van.
That should keep you out of trouble.

just dress up in 1970's clothes, smoke ciggarette and have a strong smell of booze from you.
you can "it cool, Mr. Policeman, were from the 70's so where all safe.

I think this has come up before but...

They can do all the stops they want, them customs fellas, but both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland are within the EU so there is the free movement of goods and services. Buy as much as you can carry!

Considering there was a bombscare last night I would say that security will be heightened, especially for vans with southern license plates.

If you're stopped just say in your best nordie accent: 'I'm an innocent mon.'

    Guaranteed to work.

    It was acceptable in '80's.

just leave a pile of coats in the back and if you stop tell your friend to get under them.

They'll find nothing if the guy in the back hides it in his gut.

The booze buying up there is on its last legs with the euro/sterling exchange rate.
The amount of people buying booze up north has dwindled as places like tesco down south have gotten thier act together.

This bit that people have had difficulty understanding is what the country accent sounds like to people in Dublin!!! No specific county either. They all sound like this.

I still can't figure out what that young lad was trying to say.

You will get done for overloading if they are quick enough to catch you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,553 ✭✭✭Banned Account

OP - it's unusual to be stopped now so under normal circumstances, the chances are slim - plus you have a ROI license and ROI plates.

BUT - there has been quite a bit of activity in the North of late - amother device yesterday so it may not actually be 'normal circumstances' at the moment.

Now that I have been somewhat serious, I will now give an AH answer and suggest that you tape your friend to a nice wing back chair, rivet it to the roof and tell him to say Nee Naaw Nee Naaw Nee Naaw at the top of his voice whilst flashing one of those new star wars lightsabres.

Not only are you unlikely to get stopped but you may also find that other motorists pull out of your way thus speeding up your journey significantly.

Get a coffin, lash it in the back with the 'offending body' in it.

If you are stopped, tell the garda that due to these recessionary times your undertaking business is struggling with the home trade and having to look for international business.

If he is particularly persistant, tell him he can keep the body as it was only a Nordie anyway.

Penalty points for not wearing a seatbelt. Depending on the age of the passenger as whether the driver or passenger gets them.

I'd be very sure that you could get done for carrying more passengers than the vehicle is designed for.

I'd love to see you get done for not having valid insurance, because you don't If you had an accident you aren't insured and your insurance company will come after you for any payouts to others.

Basterds arent they :P.I think the kite was just popping up as they pushed down the boot and must have snapp from that.*L* The image of a guard going over to a 10 year old with a kite in the park, pushing the kid away and then snapping the kite while laughing and walking away is not stuck in my head heh.
