    Gentlemen, The future is here:

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100616/tuk-deadly-star-wars-lightsaber-sells-on-45dbed5.html

All of us with a functionning credit card and a malfunctioning sense of responsibilities, and future Darwin Awards nominees, it's time to stand up and be counted.

"A handheld laser likened to a Star Wars lightsaber and so powerful it can instantly blind or "set fire to skin and other body parts" is on sale on the web.
The device - with a beam 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on the skin - is touted by makers as "the most dangerous laser ever created".

I'd like to get my hans on one of those.

*I am aware Hans was not a Jedi!

Could be dangerous alright, they should be subject to more testing - preferably on rabbits, guinea pigs, fluffy hamsters and members of the brestapo.

    One question: Why?

f'uckin lightsabers are ****e anyway. why would you want to have close quarters combat with a highly trained jedi when you can safely shoot a laser at them from a distance.

never understood lightsabers, it's like the SAS using a shaggin samurai sword

Even 200mw ( that's milli watt ) lasers can ignite matches and are illegal in many countries, probably Ireland too.
I think the restriction might be for 5mw.

    DealExtreme link

    A 1W laser = 1000mw !

You're supposed to use special red/green/blue laser goggles when working with lasers. But God knows if they could stop a 1000mw laser.

One stray reflection back into your eye and that's permanent eye damage.

Ah a Sky News report - expect it to be banned shortly in the UK, and a life sentence for Irish folk caught intending to buy one.

I wonder if they sell a car mount to go with it.

It can probably set fire to car tyres.... hmmmmm :pac:

The odds are that this would be classified as a weapon and at the very least confiscated by customs unless
you had some technology research permit / exemption.

In his defence he may have pluralised for the sake of clarity. The alternative, get my han on that, sounds bad and could be misinterpreted as rubbing one's jap's eye against said lightsabre rather than grabbing it in your "hans".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭fakearms123

the laser is too small and narrow to look good anyway, it just looks like a laser key ring that can blind you and burn your skin.... wait I take that back.... that sounds awesome!

Say there was some scalliwags outside your gaf drinking and making a bit of a nuisance of themselves would you be able to burn them a little bit from your window or would you need to be up close to do it

As well as blinding, burning and causing cancer, its Hong Kong-based maker, Wicked Lasers, admits that "a split-second laser light in a plane cockpit (...) can be disastrous".

Holy crap! It blinds, burns and causes cancer? Wheres Bin Laden, I'll get him good!

The Artic emits a 445nm cool blue, ultra high power 1W beam

it's a blue laser, yes it will cause serious eye damage and should not be let in the hands of idiots, if you want a visible beam just get a 5mW green laser (but make bloody sure it's got an infra red filter)

but it can't hold a candle to the bog standard CO2 lasers when it comes to cutting

    <video>

    Meh. If that's 1W I am going to need 10 to 15W.

I don't want to have to HOLD stuff to burn it dammit. I just wanna go OFF WITH YOUR HEAD! and then it's gone.

What about if Darth Vader comes into your house and starts bossing you around, what you going do then chief? Huh?

    That's what you need a light-saber for.

Its a legal weapon, wrong thing in the wrong hands.

    Its not a Lightsaber!

Dose the beam stop 4 feet in the air?

    No.

Then its not a Lightsaber is it?

Its a laser. Make one that stops 4 feet in the air and can cut hands off then I will be impressed.

I know its not a real lightsaber, but I volunteer to test it on scangers, emo/scene kids and D4's, just to see which burns the most.

Sorry to spoil anyone's fun, but these are already illegal in Ireland.

Legal Restrictions for Lasers in Ireland:

    - lasers of less than 5 milli Watts
    - in the light frequencies of 630 to 680nm (Red)

Which means that all Blue and Green lasers (which are out side of light frequencies of 630 to 680nm) are not allowed.

Yes, they actually have restrictions on the wavelenght/colour.

Retroreflector - like a fancy mirror - a device or surface that reflects light back to its source with a minimum scattering of light.

Where did you get those legal restrictions?

Criminal Justice Act. It's available on the web to view.

There are also details about it in the Airsoft Forum Charter, since it's a common question for airsofters using laser targeting.
