At the grade I play (junior hurling) they get 40euro for a League game and 50euro for a Championship match.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭Magi11

    That's fairly decent. Thanks

Officially Referees do not get paid. they get re-emburst for any expenses they have, this at times could lead to having to bring two cars to a game if other officials etc travel with him.

Depends on what county you are in, I know it isn't as much in Cork. You do need to go and do a course before starting to ref, if you contact the Games Development Officer for your county, they would know about when and where the courses are on.

    Games Development Officer

Going off track just for a second, is there many counties where this committee is an utter joke.

TBH it was a bit of a joke in Cork until last year, still kind of is with only five GDO's for the whole county! What they really should be doing imo is to employ any inter county players who are unemployed to go around to the schools and coach the kids, it would be brilliant for primary school kids to b coached by their inter county heros!

Would agree with the employing unemployed intercounty players.

I would imagine there aren't many unemployed intercounty players.... most get jobs from contacts or are 'looked after'.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 15,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

There is - the Cork board put it in the monthly newsletter about any firm with a job for an intercounty player or something along that lines should contact the PRO - the GPA are the same, they have set up a couple of things for such players

It depends on whos playing according to the Cork supporters* the Kerry Co. Board usually give X Referee a couple of thousand to rig every match.

*Who are we to question such sporting geniuses with inner knowledge of the game.

Alex Ferguson is doing that with 20 years in the premiership.

by the time you put fuel in the car and drive to the match and back, would you get €25 from a club game?
    why wouldn't they be paid?
clubs in most counties pay their affiliation fees and this is used to cover things like referees' costs

local soccer clubs have a collection from players after every game to cover the refs expenses. I know of a few GAA clubs that have to do this also as they are very tight for club running costs

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 15,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

the way it is in Cork afaik is that the refs get €20/€25 a match plus travel expenses, not sure how much per mile they have to travel that they get paid. Adult and juvenile games are paid at the end of the year, clubs pay the board, board pays the refs

Don't remind me of scarecrow refs, we had one ref for a camogie county semi final, basically walked between the two 65's for the whole game, on occasion, no further, but a lot of the time he was stood bang in the middle. Anyway, I was in goals, and one shot went two feet wide and the umpire waved it wide while running back for the sliotar, well the ref took it as being a goal (no goalnets) We lost the game by two points, and the ref wouldn't rescind his decision, even though the umpire came up and told him it wasn't a goal!

Ah sure serves you right - you should have saved it anyway for the practice :p

I was at a game last Saturday night in Dublin and the referee should have paid the teams he was so bad, we won by a point but by jeasus he was awful.

In Dublin its €40 and it not a match fee its to cover expenses, fuel, toll bridge, the match fee is €3 per team the rest is expenses.
In fairness the referee's in Dublin are fairly good and the Coiste Ná Reiteoiri is well ran.

Do you have to bring umpires?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 15,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

depends on the game, any big game such as a final the ref would normally bring their own umpires

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭Magi11

Thanks Rebel Girl. Does anyone in Dublin know about the umpires? In monaghan refs must bring 4 umpires to all adult matches

Refs are supposed to. They are given passes and all the gear for them.

They should have had them 7/8 years ago! Dublin have 50 - they were very proactive in securing outside sponsorship to help pay for them. Cork lagged behind and it was only last year that they were appointed. Did you read the strategic plan? Some interesting things in there about coaching!

I think some of it is a bit much, a lot expected to be done in clubs on a voluntary basis - good ideas in theory, and I hope that it does end up working!

Wouldn't mind it tbh! Doing PE teaching in college, so it would be an option out of my degree if I couldn't get a teaching job. So it is defo a direction I'd head if I could, doing a lot of coaching anyway.

Inter-county refs get absolutely nothing except tiny travel expenses and something like a $15 food expense. This is to cover his two linesmen, fourth official and four umpires. The GAA need to be giving more per mile for both referees and players!

Are you sure about this? I saw a documentary on Pat McEnaney and Mick Curley around 1999 and it was 15 pound then. Surely in 10 years it has improved?

No I am 100% sure. I did a referee course in Parnell Park and they went through an inter-county referees expenses. In the end the referee is losing a lot of money per matchday which will surely drive referees away.

Lads (and lassies) 2 quick questions, does a goalie HAVE to use a kicking tee when taking a kickout and if a player is taking a 13 yard free and it is blocked by a player OUTSIDE the small square, what is the punishment?
    Thanks

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 15,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

Keeper does not have to use a kicking tee - rule states that the keeper may use a kicking tee, not must use a kicking tee

Not sure what you mean by the second question - but I think it should be a free from the centre of the 13m line, if the defending player was not far enough back - would be considered a technical foul if the defending player was inside the large rectangle. If the defending player is outside the large rectangle, and illegally blocks it, the free would be moved forward 10m, i.e. middle of the 13m line

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭Magi11

    Thanks.
The second question was to do with a situation I had last week. A team got a 13m free. The defending team had a player outside the small square and I told him that if the ball touched him it was a penalty, but I think that rule only applies to if he was in the square so it would seem to be the case that if a player stands in front of a 13m free there is no sanction other than retake the free

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 15,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭rebel girl 15

Any fouls in the small square are penalties, only aggressive fouls in the large rectangle are a 13m free, technical fouls outside the small square are 13m frees

seems to be worth about 50 euro a game with travel allowance, tips and food

I was trying to remember how much I got for the last time I reffed a game, and then remembered that it's next to impossible to get a penny out of the Clare County Board
