I have being trying to find a similar priced two seater cabrio, especially with a hardtop for that kind of money! with no results, and believe the running costs are low for a roadster. Ive heard the handling is far better then other two seaters that cost twice the price!

if you're in the position to buy a new, yes it is a fabulous car. The quality of the (leather) interior of the Mk3 - current model - and the folding hardtop, are, imho, unmatched.

But if you're on budget, there are tons of used one - equally fabulous, and they go way, way back. Mine turns 20 this year ! :D

It really depends what cars you're comparing it to. It's better than most but it's not better than a Lotus!

Ah the poor fella... sure he thinks a shogun has power, and he actually thinks the Mk2 Jetta and Vento's are nice looking cars!
OP, the MX5 is a fantastic car. Some say that the new one isn't quite as good as the old one in the handling stakes, but that's like saying Cheryl Cole isn't quite as good looking as Jessica Alba.

Or an S2000, which costs more, but is more hardcore than an MX-5 (well, the MX-5 isn't hardcore at all).

I believe Honda do not sell the S2000 in Eire, anymore due to its massive price of 60k plus because of VRT. I agree if I lived in the UK, I'd get one. Great looking car. I also believe Top Gear and Fifth Gear rated it has the best Roadster for its price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Actually, mazda mx5 got its popularity, becouse it was an affordable roadster which was able to shift aswell.

Lovely car, newer ones would be easyer to live at daily bases, as they became heavyer, more comfortable, better equiped.

thought if you looking for pure drivers expereince, then go for older one. Perfect: mk1 with turbo kit on.

I dont know how is it now, but for allmoust 20 years it was the best handling roadster in the world. I can honestly say, that driving mx5 is extreamly fun.

shogun: i have seen your previuos post, i presume you better stick with manly hairy chested car like 535d. Leave these toy car to people who like them.

    Even less than that:
Now from only an incredible €23,495.

    See mazda.ie

Incredible price for an excellent little car. Way cheaper than I thought they were. Mazda singlehandedly re-generated the segment of the small affordable sporty 2 seat convertible 20 years ago. The segment that was so popular in the 60s with mainly British cars.

Well in this country, your forced to by our glorious leaders "Dail Eireann". As its the reg plate and delivery tax and charges. Unlike our Northern cousins who get all that included in the final price!! So what can you do!

I'm sure the attitude of the Irish consumer is changing during these tough times but some posts on this thread remind me of an international survey about hotel reservations in Spain from about 10 years ago. Apparently, on booking, German and Dutch customers were given the best rooms and Irish customers were given the worst rooms. Shure they don't complain, don't demand value for money and are easiest ripped off :)

I know someone with the 1.8, says he's disappointed with the performance and that he should have gotten the 2.0, which they don't do sell Ireland. Seems to be a recurring theme with Mazda not to sell the performance models in Ireland.

    Here's mine, one of the last 200 official UK Mk1 ('98, 1.8i).

To give you an idea of the 'personal attachment' factor which these can generate (entirely proportional to the fun + satisfaction factor :D), we bought it from the supplying dealer at 14kmiles in the UK in 2000, then moved to Dublin in 2004 where it followed us (98-D-7xxxx for a while, no VRT payable, but if you see a "Berkeley" entry in the VRT calculator, that entry's based on ours), then over to France for long-term storage (xxxx-Bxx-57) until 2008. We moved back to the UK in late 2008 so it is on its original UK plate again.

59kmiles as I type this, entirely stock thoughout (except for the car radio and a replacement hood a month ago, with glass/heated rear window) and my daily driver.

I haven't driven a MkIII, but €26k sounds very reasonable if, like me, you're likely to keep and enjoy it over 10 years. It's probably cost us 10% of that in 10 years of ownership to keep it in the condition you see above, and I much preferred driving it this past winter (with the snow we got a few times) than the Scoob.

As regards the 'girly car' comments...just ignore them. I drive the Maz, the Mrs drives the Scoob... the Maz is just more fun and rewarding, simple as. 'nuff said, methinks ;)

Lovely car, in mint condition. Im sure you paid peanuts for it in the UK, unlike what you would pay here!

    Thanks, all :)

We paid £14k for it back in 2000, from the main dealer who sold it brand new to the previous owner. So it had depreciated £3k (from new, £17k) in 2 years.

10 years of ownership, and I'd be lucky (very) to get £3,5k for it now.

I can't remember what the VRT value came in at, when I went through the motions to reg and tax it in Ireland in 2004. We didn't have to pay it, since we'd owned the car more than 6 months before moving over (....thank God, 'cause I don't think we'd have had a refund when we moved back to the UK in '08 :pac:).

We used to get loads of offers for it, where we used to live (Rathfarnahm) and we could have made an absolute killing at the time.

I don't expect importing a Mk1 (Jap or UK car) from the UK would come in at much these days, even with VRT slapped on top

I'm usually one to hanker after the biggest engine going, but I didn't find the original MX-5 underpowered even in 1.6 form. Some cars are just right, and I think the 5 is one of them. Might be different with the latest model, i've yet to drive one.

If you get the1.6 which was not factory underpowered, then you sorted. I just don't remember which year they did it, so that 1.8 would look more powerfully...

Bouth engines are great, 1.6 is more Erving engine, and 1.8 has a wee bit more of power feel. Bouth engines can handle soooooo much abuse !!! They are forged turbo engines, withouth the actual turbo !!!

I was thinking to sell my one and get skyline that time, but like someone mentioned allready, it's just posible to let them go!!! They are just unreal amount of fun!!!

Damn, if I go for some nice drive in the country I prefer allmoust 3 times less powerfully Mazda, just becouse it's way way more fun!

    While I'm agreement with that, I recently drove a fellow SY5er's 5 turbo, dyno'd at a touch over 200bhp.

Whereas I'd always thought, after years of driving it, that the 1.8/130bhp was just right for it (and that's including past ownership of an Integrale and a couple of WRXs), and could get lairy only if you ask (insistently at that, and in the wet :D), after that driving experience I could very easily see myself with an extra 50 bhp on tap, which would still feel 'just right', more so.

    Still, entirely subjective I suppose.
