what activity are you doing... I'd have used them for hiking and cycling... your phone may have all you need built in (or connected to a Bluetooth GPS) with the right application...

    Nokia (Symbian)

    Andriod

    iPhone

otherwise you'd be looking at a dedicated GPS device like those from Garmen:

I use sportstracker on my nokia for running and cycling. Its great, shows distance, time, average, top speed etc and you can download your route when you're finished and view it on google maps. Only thing is the phone is a bit bulky for running with.

The dedicated watch GPS route can be very expensive.

Runkeeper on the iPhone works very well with integrated mapping, etc. http://runkeeper.com

I've tried Nokia Sports Tracker and it's ok, the phone takes a while to pick up a GPS signal which is a problem for me, but the main drawback is lack of a heart rate monitor. There was a sport edition nokia which included a Polar bluetooth heart monitor belt, which would be great if it could be bought separately.. oh well...

A friend of mine is a serious runner and got the Garmin 405 for christmas. He loves it and thinks it's fantastic, and I have to say it's the first Garmin GPS watch I'd consider buying.

Myself I'm still using Polar S625X. There's no GPS tracking on it, but there's a footpod that tracks your distance quite accurately, and you don't have to wait for a GPS location fix. There are plenty of newer models with this technology, which I find better than GPS, unless you particularly want to see where you've been running and share maps with friends.

Do these apps work on the Apple iTouch???

Well, iTouch doesn't have a GPS receiver, so I very much doubt it :)

Maybe with an external bluetooth GPS, but would you really bother running with so many things attached to you?

I am trying to encourage myself to start running again .... I was hoping that by using the gps I could encourage myself to set new goals and routes!!

how about a solution that just tracks your run parameters (rather than mapping with GPS)...

    e.g. Nike +

Garmin is your man. GPS watches for running/Cycling etc. Check out the Forerunner range (405 getting..mixed reviews) Or you could try www.runningmap.com or similar, run your route and then plot it on runningmap..it will give you your distance. Thats the one I use. Santa is hopefully gonna give me a garmin for Xmas!

    +1 for runkeeper.

I use it for runs & cycling and find it extremely accurate, although I will question the calories burned data.

I also log all activities completed in the gym where gps isn't relevant.
