Hi, I am looking for some recommendations for fitness books, preferably academic books. Would like to do some reading about fitness methods, metabolism, hit etc and the research studies and science behind them. Any suggestions.
    Thanks!

'Sports Training Principles' is one of the best most comprehensive books you could read. Everything you want to know and more. Can't remember who its by, but its a sports/training degree in about 300 pages.

maybe search the web for sports journals as well.

The book you talking about is by Frank W. Dick and as you said it does cover everything but its about 30 quid.

As ragg said google what you want and you will learn everything you want to know. Even by looking through different forums you will get links to good sites to read through

sometimes a book is just better for these things, especially considering most people jobs involve them staring at a computer screen all day, you don't wanna have to go home and stare at it for a few more hours, thats where books come into play

I've read a lot on the internet, I follow blogs and websites such as transforms, bodyrock, gubernatrix..thing is I just want something concrete that I can hold in my hand, browse through and go back to when I want to refer to something. Trouble with the internet is, it's sometimes hard to remember exactly where you found the information and you end up trawling through pages to find it again.

This is a key factor as well.

    thanks again!

Just ordered it myself. :) I have some holiday time coming up and I'd say it's just the ticket. I got the 4th edition. It's a few years old (2004) but only around 7 euro including delivery (versus around 30 euro for the 5th edition). Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll report back on any changes I make to my training.

Comprehensive is definitely the word that i would use here. 25 chapters of indepth detail. I have to admit I havent finished it yet, almost there though. But it is one of those books that you always go back to for reference. I was particularly interested on the chapter about nutrition (I do love my food) and I am now focusing on the theory and practice of strength and endurance, mainly strength though. I've just started focusing more on these in my training.

With regards to the book, definitely worth a read!

Mine arrived yesterday. It's very course text book like alright. The first chapter was tough enough to get through (explaining the difference between adduction and abduction and that kind of thing) but gives some good anatomical detail which I liked. On holidays from Friday for two weeks so I'll plough through it then.
