Supra vs R34

If you were in the lucky position to be able to afford and run either a Supra TT (Mk 4) or a R34 GTR which would you choose and why?

This is purely out of interest and I didnt bother posting this in the main motoring section as I'd get the typical response of "If I had that kind of money to spend Id get this or that instead etc!"

So if it came down to these 2 big hitters which would you go for and why?

Looks better, 4 wheel drive, massive road presence, massive tuning potential, better handling, better grip

    R34 GT-R

Better Handling (due to AWD and All Wheel Steering) and better looking (IMO).
This is conjecture, however, never having driven either

Agreed. But I think the Supra also has quite a large road presence and it has a huge tuning potential too (e.g. the Supra from Hell! re:YouTube)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

GTR anyday!!! That Supra from hell looks like it's a drag car, would never take corners as quick as a GTR

But to be fair the GTR is my 'someday' car! They're far less common than the Supra too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

    Supra is common?

TBH I'd be tempted to go for the Supra just because the R34 has been tuned to death. The Supra isn't far behind, but if I see another 1000+ bhp R34 I think I'll scream.

I suppose it depends what you're looking for. If I was looking for a road car or a track car I'd probably go for the R34 every time. That fancy 4wd system probably would save my life. But for straight line speed that 2J-GTZ (guessing) is hard to beat. Sometimes there's no replacement for displacement....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

If you see another 1000bhp R34 you'll scream, I've only ever seen TWO R34 GTRs, I've seen countless supras. Neither of the GTRs were putting down anything close to 1000hp. You do realise the ones that do put out that much power are very special cars right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,396 ✭✭✭Tefral

R34 without question, better looking, better handling, sounds better too for some reason...

The supra is more of a cruiser

Id love to be in the position of having to choose though!:D

It'd be the GTR everytime for me.
love the look of them..seriously stand out big time.

I see a supra nearly every day, they're as common as muck around these parts, not neccesarily all TT though but they just don't stand out at all anymore.

the one time I seen an r34GTR passing me into a shopping centre car park I had to follow and ask if I could take pics of it :o
    010srm.jpg
whereas I can look out my window right now and see a Supra TT!

Also, aren't the r34GTRs far bigger money to buy than the Supras?
that'd be a fairly deciding factor for me really if it was an issue, otherwise..GTR all the way

Depends on the spec really. There are a few R34 GTR's going on Pistonheads between the ranges of £20000 up to £40000.

OTOH there are a lot of cheap Supras on PH but any of the rarer desired ones (i.e Twin Turbo, Manual and 1996 up) seem to be going for £10000+, so I dont think the price differnce between the two cars is that much

    R34 GTR
I've never driven a GTR but i had a Supra VVTi TT for a year and it was a weapon. Mine had leather and all the toys inside and was definitely a machine for crossing continents in. I had an Altezza at the same time and while the tezza handled well, the supra was definitely more sure footed going into a corner at speed, despite having an extra 150bhp

I think a supra in the right colour is a nicer looking car, with the factory high rise spoiler and decent set of rubber poking out it's is still one of the best looking rear ends on the roads today

You can have fun in a Supra at 50mph flicking out of bends etc, very rewarding on the back roads. The GRT with all the electronic trickery and 4wd i think you would need to be doing seriously illegal speeds to get the same thrills.

Real world the Supra TT is the more usable car and far cheaper to buy than a GTR. Mine was a 99 facelift and eventually let it go for €7.5k :(

    R34 GTR
The R34 is a newer car and TBH I'd imagine most people would opt for it given the choice.
It's a matter of personal taste though and personally I prefer the Supra.
I love the styling of it plus it's handy to get 400BHP out of a TT without doing too much to it.
The stock traction control in the TTs is terrible but most have been replaced with the Race Logic system so cornering is fine with them.
I do prefer Supras to R34s but only barely.

May be slightly biased there Armin...;)

But yeah it does come down to personal taste.

    Hi folks,
Just stumbled accross this and though id give my opinion...

Iv happened to own both these cars; a white Supra TT RZ and a bayside blue R34 GTR V-Spec. I had the supra for about 3 years, which i changed for an R34, which I still have, about 2 years now...

The supra was a fantastic car, it was mildly tuned(380bhp), but was uber reliable considering the power it had, id classify it as a powerful cruiser, but always regret never bringin it out on track. As noted above, the traction control was sh1t, but this could just be turned off. Iv never driver a car before that could light up the rear wheels so easily,...

I eventually changed it for an r34 gtr. BTW the price differecnce between two is HUGE, the gtr was over DOUBLE the price of the gtr, and i find it much more expensive to run than the supra, (its runnin 439bhp). The gtr is definetly more of a performace car compared to the supra, and although it runs mostly rwd(sendin power to the front when needed) its hard to lose traction unless your pushin really hard, huge amounts of grip(unlike supra) but powerslids is still posssible, not avisable on the road, track only:D

I dont think im goin to vote, iv enjoyed ownin both:D:D:D

Supra TT, when you get bored with 330bhp, for €8k you can bring her up to a reliable 550bhp.

Marty at SSI in Antrim does this kind of work and works on about 70% of all the over 500bhp 1JZ GTE's and 2JZ GTE's in Ireland.

    http://www.supraspecialists.moonfruit.com/

The reason I'm posting the link is that he makes massive power Supras vaguely affordable. Prior to Marty and Colin at SSI, I had to go to the UK and be man raped with prices to get professional work done.

For me its a GTR hands down simply because its my favourite car. I am a fan of the Supra but the R34 has my heart!

Its much cheaper to buy a Supra than it is to buy an R34 GTR so that would have an influence in any decision to buy anything!

Thinking of what possible reason anyone would buy an NSX-R over a GTR
They're a nice car but they're not in the same class as GTR or a TT Supra.

An NSX-R is in a class above both. They cost stupid money and are seriously rare.

Is that an aftermarket mod or could they be bought new? I've only ever heard of a v spec and nur spec.

The rarity of the NSX-R is the main appeal for me. I read somewhere before that the recaros from the R are completely carbon fibre and cost 5k, I can't remember if that was each or not though

There a final edition of the R34, factory built by nismo with 500bhp+, retailed at over uk£25 more than an R35 gtr

But a hell of alot more sought after than an R35 for any skyline fan....

Nismo Z-tune R34. Apart from that stupid bonnet it's all gravy.

I'll have to have an our read into these when I have some spare time. The NSX-R is still a very special car all the same but this GTR does sound nice.

Due to the limited run of these there probably collectors items more than anything at this stage, there cost over uk£80 new, but think there worth more now.

An NSX-R is some machine too, id wouldnt mind one myself but very expensive for such an older car now and just isnt near as practical as the GTR, nor tunable...

5 NSX-R gt's were made so they could race in the GT500 in Japan & priced at a  $462,400 or 357,019 euro.

i'd take the gtr on the basis that their are a few around but most are body kit conversions....

also i suppose the same goes for the supra ( n/a with the fake BOV b/s )

skyline is a great car... can not only take some abuse but give some back !

    :o I have a recurring problem where I confuse NSXs with 200SXs.
Not sure if I'm convinced they're a class above both but they're certainly at least in the same class.
