Thats the point though, Dublin finally has an airport to compare favourably to other major airports.

The Midget Mini-Carry On Service is delayed due to the shortage of midgets caused by the filming of 'The Hobbit'.

Dublin Airport Authority is offering members of the public the opportunity to be amongst the first to experience this exciting new building by taking part in operational trials that will take place during July, August, September and October.

The trials are designed to simulate typical airport operational scenarios and are central to Dublin Airport Authority’s plans to commence operations in Terminal 2, safely and effectively. The volunteers selected for trials will act as passengers on a specific trial day and will be given scripts outlining the particular role they will be asked to assume.
Be among the first members of the public to experience Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport. All participants in the trial programme will also receive a goodie bag from Dublin Airport and those over 18 will have their names entered into a draw to win valuable prizes, including a holiday worth €5,000.

Who fancy's being one of the first guniea pigs? Nie to get a sneak preview though.

its just a massive waste of money IMO. i am in dublin airport once a week, its simply a place where i wait for a plane and get on it, returning sometime a few days later, straight off the plane and straigh home.

im sure it is the same for almost everybody else, unless you work there. ive never really cared about facilities at airport, once i can eat if i need to, get a pint and get through relatively quickly in security, thats enough for me. a pint near the gate if i have time or the plane is delayed is also nice, but seriously, is all that "looks good" factor really needed for what is just a building that is not really needed.

its this type of typical irish 'ah shure its grand the way it is' attitude that has often stopped this country progressing imo

errm no, its the "why should we waste money on somthing that is not needed when there are far more important things in urgent need of money" attitude.

btw, the banks, an inept government, corrupt business men and greedy builders stopped this country of progressing, not the irish attitude.

actually I reckon it was the irish attitude of ......

" Damn the greedy bankers ,
    Damn the greedy builders,
    Damn the greedy politicians

But Damned if Im going to get up off my arse and do anything about it
    "

.....which has sunk this country and held it back.

The airport is the first and last impression visitors to the country get whether they are tourists or on business, possibly considering investing in the country.
Considering the state of the old terminal I think this is very badly needed

aaah sure a couple of old portakabins would do the same job (just flew ryanair from liverpool last week)

think it looks great myself, might be expensive but i think sometimes stuff just needs to be done

Terminal looks good but do passengers still have to head out of the building onto the tarmac to get onto a plane no matter what the weather or have they connecting ramps directly to the planes ?

Yes but is it going to be like with Cork Airport where they charge extra for using the airbridge so most airlines then just dont use them.

Every airport in the world charges for use of airbridges.

The thing about Cork was, they never had them before (they only have one anywaY?)- therefore it seemed like an unnessecary expense

    Ye theres only one.
Will airlines have this choice in Dublin T2?

As in Cork even at the stand with the airbridge aircraft sometimes did not use it.

I think there's 19 air bridges and judging by the layout of the pier they will be used for every flight

I had my name down for the trials as well. I got an email yesterday with a link for choosing dates. There was one date listed, today (14th). Not much notice. They had 80 places up for grabs and at that stage 72 were available. I didn't respond and got another mail today. The available places were down to 68 and a few hours later this went to 66. As you can see there was a massive take up. Perhaps if they gave people a bit more notice they would get a better response.

I was up in the airport on Sunday morning and the outside of the terminal is impressive to say the least.
However I would agree with a few "nay sayers" or posters here who think that the terminal cost an excessive amount of money. ( I suppose many would say, like most infrastructure in this country in the past number of years) however anything to lessen the queues and the cattlemart like feel of the old terminal is a good thing I suppose.
I still dont believe we needed all the "bells and whistles" that are in this terminal, and for the money it really doesnt appear to be worth it. Thats my opnion anyway.

i read somewhere else that theres only a luggage tag and chocolates in the goody bag..... was gona go in september bt maybe i wont now!

Hey, how late am I on updating!!
Goodie bag was terrible! A few booklets on the terminal and a DAA cloth bag with a sweet.
Arrived early morning 9am. Didnt get out until after 2pm. Long dayyyy!
Airport inside was impressive. Slight vertigo on the second set of escalators up to security. Your up very high! If you turn and look behind you all you see is glass,I did get a bit dizzy up there!
As an airport worker I went in believing it would be simple & I couldnt get lost. But I did due to terrible signage for immigration for traveling to the US.
Otherwise I was impressed with the lay out and design. Having said that it may be a completely different kettle of fish when in working order.
Arrivals is on the second floor.
Baggage hall has massive high ceilings, you dont get that closed feeling like the roof is within touching distance, as currently in terminal 1.
The lunch was well stocked with pre packaged sambo's caramel slices danish pastries etc, bottles of water, tea coffee.
We had to filll out a short form after arriving at the departure gate. Feedback etc
Then headed off on our arrivals journey. Filling out another feedback sheet upon finishing that leg. Then we had lunch, filled out the competition slips. Waited around for 30 minutes or so until everyone had returned and waited for them to eat, then were thanked and given out goodie bags and escorted back out.

Hope this helps somewhat. Would I do it again? No
Am I glad I did it? Yes, it was good to say we were the first visitors into the new terminal and to take a look around before anyone else :)

Was anyone else at the T2 Trials yesterday? I was so surprised when we got to board Aer Lingus EI-ORD (A330), I got to sit in premier for once, and get into the cockpit! We did have to then get off unfortunately. :(

Absolutely fantastic terminal, huge spaces, really bright! Although the duty free is smaller than T1. The walk to the end of the Pier was not as long as I thought and each gate has alot more seats than in any of the others. Cant wait for November! :D

yeah but he said transatlantic aerlingus flights won't be, T2 could still be operating other flights in nov

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Dacian

Officially T2 opens for business in November, but when is the question? I think the DAA are hedging their bets to allow for a delay of a week or two. I have heard (mate worked on the financing end of things) an intended opening day of Nov 7th, now whether there will be a 1st flight on that day is another matter.

With EI being the biggest operator in DUB (38% movements) and main user of T2 you would assume the 1st flight will be an EI one. The EI A330 used in trials certainly gives that impression. (I was told no actual aircraft would be boarded!!)
EI have stated they will move in for November but again is that some flights, all flights or only T/A flights. I would think a slow ramp up of operations would make the most sense for both EI and the DAA.

I read that Eithiad are building a new lounge in T2, are Aer Lingus doing the same? I would hope so.

Yes EI ethihad and DAA will have brand new state of art corporate lounges in T2 or actually the old Pier C will be the location. Providing panoramic view of some of the airfield.

EI will too. (in or around the old c42 i heard) Plan is for it to be one of the cornerstones of their renewed service driven approach :D

    Thanks for that confirmation

Located at the old C gates, so should be good view of that ramp section and most probably any inbound a/c on RWY28.
