Q-Con Super SF4 pre-seeding

Hey guys, in preparation for the Q-Con XVII Super Street Fighter IV tournament, I was wondering if I could get a little help from you guys. I want to try and seed the groups but I don't play the game much so I don't know who the top players are.

Since seeding a tournament can take a verrrrrrrrry long time, I want to get some of it done in advance. So, pretty much, could you post your opinions of who are the top 16 players in Ireland, in order? Opinions will vary between people and that's fine, I just need a rough idea of which players to keep separate.

If I have opinions from you guys, it'll speed up the seeding, which in turn speeds up the whole event - which means I can relax sooner! :P

Thanks in advice for any help!

edit: Feel free to give the same advice (though I'm sure a much smaller number than 16) for BlazBlue and Tekken if there's enough players. :)

Here's the current seed list based on the last Inferno :

    1st - Cobelcog (Cammy) - 8
    2nd - Bush (Chun-Li/Blanka) - 7
    3rd - Azza (Dictator) - 6
    4th - fake_roogle (Boxer) - 5
    5th - Liquidswords (Fei Long) - 4
    5th - The Hound (Akuma/Adon/Dictator) - 4
    7th - unky chop chop (Ken) - 3
    7th - Doctor DooM (Guile) - 3
    9th - Ken B (Claw) -2
    9th - Owwmykneecap (Claw) - 2
    9th - D4RK ONION (E. Honda) - 2
    9th - FutureGuy (Ryu) - 2
    13th - Jim (Cammy) - 1
    13th - Malachy (Boxer/El Fuerte) - 1
    13th - Speedhaak (Boxer) -1
    13th - Sisko (Ryu/Ibuki) - 1

    However that's a little mish-mashed so I would say something like :
    Cobelcog
    Newtype
    Simon Lau
    Bush
    Azza
    Hound
    Dreddybajs
    Doom
    Roogle
    Blag
    Liquidswords
    Ken B
    Chunkis
    Kirby
    D4RK onion
    me? :P

I dunno exactly but something like that. I didn't put much thought into where people are on the list and I'm not on it but it should give you something to work from.

I would also suggest seeding by location where possible.

Cheers! I wanted to avoid purely going by most recent tourney results since there's some great players who may not be able to travel either up north or down south.

And yeah I wanna split up by region if possible, with the sheer number of players it could be hard but I'll do my best!

    Cobelcog

    Hound
    Simon Lau
    Bush
    Azza
    Roogle
    Blag
    Liquidswords
    Dreddybajs
    Chunkis
    Doom
    Red350
    Kirby
    D4RK onion
    Orim

I'm not exactly sure as to the order of the second half of the list, after top 8 it's kind of hard to put people in an easy order

edit: And I've only met Simon once, I dunno if putting Hound above him is correct, just going on the events I've been to

Not too sure of an exact order I'd use, but I'd definitely have Ken B on the list ahead of Orim, but other than that your list is the top 16.

Honourable mentions to Unky Chop Chop and Future Guy who have both proven to be very solid.

There's a thought, I could totally do with some toast between tournaments, wonder if I'll be allowed to plug a toaster in somewhere?

Anyway, the event's on from the 25th to the 27th of this month. The Super SF4 tourney is on the Saturday but there's plenty of other games to play for both freeplay and tourneys over the weekend!

edit: Wait, eight quid? Are you sure you're not thinking of a different event or are you including the overall Q-Con entry fee in that?

Do I get a BB seeding for having played it more than once? :P

Haven't heard of anybody playing it apart from the 5-6 usual suspects at Slayers the guts of a year ago.

    Single-day entry = £7
    Tourney entry = £1

    unless I'm mistaken.

hahahaha i knew you would show up on this!!!!!!!!!! i didnt go because i genuinly didnt know, but its cool, was good craic. im wholly undecided whether or not to go this year. are you oragnising it this year?
a suggestion i would make to whoever is organising it is that last year sf4 was being played on ps3 and 360. i was at an extreme disadvantge on the ps3 version cus i cant use the pad, i use a 360 fightpad, if someone had a ps3 fightpad then problem solved but they didnt. i may aswell not have played the ps3 matches i was so bad. so the suggestion would be to decide on a particular console so people can get organised for what they are fighting on.
    just a suggestion.

    Don't worry, it's all 360 for SSF4 this year.

There wasn't supposed to be a 2nd place prize for it at all. So it was at the time pointless for me to tell you to go. But during prize giving itself some extra goodies were found by the main committee and handed out. FYI, it was Marvel vs Capcom 2 for the PS2. But if you were curious, you should have checked it out. All the info was in the con book.

Circumstance prevents me from doing so this year unfortunately. At the moment I will not be there at all. Vyze will be the videogame co-ordinator for the weekend.

This year it will all be run on the 360 alone. All our SF events this season have been run on the 360. So you will be grand fight pad wise if you decide to go.

We ve only had one tourny in super which is a different game to vanila.

surely it would not be fair to seed people for thei vanilla reputation.

I'm sure people have played enough Super to get a rough idea of who the top players are regardless of tournament results - especially seeing as not every tournament has all the top players attending (a tournament held up north may not have the best southerners appearing and vice versa).

Plus, without seeding, we'd have to do it completely random, which means that the top 6 players could end up in a group together which would be a disaster! In my opinion, seeding based on general consensus is the best we can do for the time being.

Wouldn't be fair on the top players not to, and at the same time will provide a better shot of the best players actually making it to the final, which is a good thing imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭Owwmykneecap

10 new characters, and a ton of new ultras, buffs and nerfs, fair difference in my opinion.

We did decided to reset seeding for super, with it being a new game and all.
I turned up, played the games I was given, got top 12 and in the "seeding list" and yet, I check today and I'm being bumped out for people who didnt even show up to the tournament.

You can surely see why I don't think that's fair.

No offence mate but it'd be madness to give you a place over newtype.

Or me for that matter, and I have placed top 8 in every Inferno and Ds since lanparty.

Kneecaps all respect to you but if you think you deserve a place over any of the 16 people I named, you are absolutely lacking sense. That's all I have to say over my selection.

A lot of players got through groups at the last Inferno because of no seeding (including you imo) that wouldn't have otherwise, due to a few groups with good players packed in. I don't mean this with any offense to you, nor do I mean that I would've got through my group (if another player had gotten through I think it would've been blag), but you're using the negative effect we saw from not seeding as a reason to not seed further.

yeah I mean personally I know I'm a lot better a player then I'm able to show at tournies so far and I ended up on that list by playing pretty damn badly, no where near my best. I just had an easy group. I still even lost matches I should have won.

    I played terrible.

I know there's people on that list I'm better then and would beat consistently, I know there's people on that lists I'd go toe to to with and have close games with. And I also know for a fact that most would rape me.

But imo due to my tourney performance I know I don't deserve to be up on that seeding list just because I got an easy group.

I wanna see myself on that list after I've played my best in a tourney and given people good solid fights that were hard fought. I don't wanna be considered top 16 till I've proved it. And I've done far from prove it.

And in the end its just a stupid list man , do you really think your a better player the lads put down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭Vyze

I came 7th place in the Super Cloudpaul's Jesus Yard tournament but I sure as hell wouldn't expect to put myself in the top 16 in Ireland! ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

@ Dreddy: At this point I'd place Hound slightly above Simon too. Hounds wake up game is a thing of beauty.

Also, I think leaving Sagat06/8 off the list is a mistake, he was unlucky with groups at the last tournament but in terms of players I'd "fear" coming up against in a tournament he is definitely up there with the top gang.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 15,239 Mod ✭✭✭✭FutureGuy

I placed joint 9th at Inferno 9 but have absolutely no point of contention regarding my omission from the list.

FWIW, my own personal opinion is that it's SSF4 and the seedings should be besed on offical SSF4 tournaments held in Ireland since it's release. But since that is not the case, and thats perfectly fine, we have to look at the overall rankings of each player to determine the top 16.

Either way, I don't belong on the list. I played horrendoulsy in groups at inferno 9. This time next year, however, I want to be in the position that no one considers removing me from such a list.

You can surely see why I don't think that's fair.

Reset seeding at Inferno =/= reset seeding anywhere else. Yes, it is a new game and of course there will be new things to learn. But alot (if not the majority) of the skills and knowledge from vanilla are transferable to super. While it is likely that the seeds in super will change from vanilla to some degree, it doesn't mean that they should be completely disregarded.

It is still possible for there to be a drastic shake up if someone puts enough effort and useful time into the game even if a tournament is seeded. Cobels Cammy being the prime example. At some stage you will have to bust a seed or player who is commomly regarded as very good anyway. It is not the seeding process that keeps non-seeded players down.

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

IMO and thats the only one that really matters, only Bison players should be seeded!

The only other opinion on the matter we need is Blags, and possibly Lazlo's and Johnny Blue and that other Irish Bison player who's name I can't remember. :P

Dreddy your being overly unfair to Kneecaps, I'd place him over some of your top 16 as well as having Sagat08 on that list. Johnny Blue and the Witch would easily make top 16 if they attended regularly but thats beside the point.

Its hard to create an accurate top 16.

Of the top generally regarded top 3 players I only play Cobelcog consistently and haven't play Mike much or Simon at all.

After Cobels and Mike you have a good few players that place very closely together who are difficult to seperate (Bush, Hound, Blag, Roogle and myself)

Then another group of players (Kirby, Sagat08, Dreddy, Ken B, Doom, Redman350), after that I don't know. Not familiar enough with other players.

I assume it's 8 groups and if the top 8 don't show the second tier of seeds fill their place.

Too many seeds makes things a bit dull.

As Doom says top 8 and second tier of 8 to jump up if the top seeds can't make it.

I'm not looking for an absolutely definitive "this is the de-facto top 16 in their correct order", just a rough guide for seeding this year's Q-Con event. I expect the top players to rank highly. :)

FutureGuy, I'm not sure if "official SSF4 tournaments" would really be the right phrase to use in reference to anything other than Capcom events. SFIE and Dragonslayers may both be running regular community-driven events, but that still doesn't make them into "official" results.

Although I understand that there is a push to unify Ireland's fighting games scenes, as Kyle said resetting the seeds for Inferno tournaments doesn't necessarily mean that every event should start from scratch with random seeds until enough Inferno events have run to decide on an order. Each fighting game event is its own thing and so rules or seeding decisions are likely to vary from event to event (e.g. one tournament may do double elimination whereas another will be single, one may allow character switching when another doesn't, and so on).

And as others have said, I was after top 16 since some members of the generally accepted top 8 won't be at Q-Con. Roogle will be out of the country and I think Simon's got a big Warhammer 40K event to take part in. Also Mike probably has cooties. :P
