Ya honestly cant! Growing up we used get in marathon Monopoly games that would last days! I remember one Christmas when the electricity went we played a game of Monopoly that lasted 3 days. Some slightly tweaked rules though, you could have as many houses/hotels on a property as you wanted. Luckily for me I ended up with Shrewsbury and Aylsbury road [the purple properties], when one of the lads landed on it it was like 10k!

The double dealing and backstabbing was great in this game, trucing with one player so you could screw another, the alliances etc... brilliant game!

Had a 7 hour marathon of this last Christmas too with some friends, definately beats the wii or poker in terms of a party game! I still have a friend who is mad at me for screwing him over in that particular game!

I had a game of this recently, it totally brings out the best and/or worst (choose as you will) in people.

We were time limited in our game to around two hours, and only had a general idea of the rules as we hadn't played in a long time, so much consulting of the instruction leaflet. Went smoothly for a while, until one of the lads managed to occupy the 'up market' areas at the very end of the board just before Go.

Trouble ensued. It became a game of everyone building small little defensive areas around the board, and yet it was impossible to protect oneself from hitting the dreaded danger zone, wiping out huge amounts of funds in the process once the houses began being built.

By the half-way point of the game, rules and alliances were not important anymore, everyone making crazy ass deals to avoid bankruptcy, while the man with the cash giggled manically in the corner.

It dragged on for another hour, but the damage was done and past the point of recovery. We continued to get owned.

Eventually, it ended, and we all learned a little something about the economy.

I love Monopoly! Me and my cousins always used to play it when we were way younger! :D We always started fighting over it but it was great craic!:D

I love monopoly, i dont many other board games at all.

One time, we organised a monopoly night in a friends house. (beer, music & monoploy) The list of eople coming just grew and grew till it was about 12 or 13. What are we gonna do we said? One of the lads had a genius idea. Get 2 monopoly boards and put them together!

Luckily the two boards we had were english and irish, so the names were all different. So we set up the boards in a figure of 8, having the free parking in the centre and 2 bankers.
Que the most epic game of monoploy ever! it lasted until the wee hours when all of us were too drunk to continue :)

The "new" rules have me deeply confused though.

I had a game in Bia Bar a few months back, and the new games that came in in the last 15 years -since my last game- confused me no end. (showing my age here )

I had a good time though. Might do it again soon :).

I always liked monopoly and it's a boardgame you can be sure to get a few players without needing to explain the rules but the one thing that puts me off picking it up anymore is the inevitable slow death when you realise you have lost and are just selling and mortgaging to survive while slowly wiping out your only way to actually make money.

Sorry to burst the bubble lads, but there are many, many, many ways to beat a game of monopoly. Such as sliding needles under fingernails.

I still shiver when I remember the long, drawn out games and the non stop bickering!

Well you can try market that to kids instead so...have a funny feeling it won't be as popular though:rolleyes:

Anyone who thinks Monopoly is THE BEST BOARDGAME, EVER, is an inexperienced pleb.

How about a REAL trading game with a good end-game, yeah?

    *The Settlers of Catan*

And that's just the start. European (particularly German) board games trump pretty much everything Parker Bros. have created bought or stolen

    It's such a pity I can't thank posts twice.

I'm a board game snob and proud!

Well I don't think calling people plebs is a good way of promoting more obscure (Catan is more obscure than monopoly in Ireland) games. Can't we all just get along?

Do. I love Catan. And I'd love to see more people playing "better" board games but I don't like this "we're better that you monopoly/cluedo/sorry players" I see..

I loved Monopoly, we used to have epic games that lasted days. We made up loads of random rules too. And never had a building limit, that would be boring. We also have the Lord of the Rings version and the Star Wars versions at home. Me and my brother are going to play the LotR version this weekend to prove to my dad that we still play board games and that they shouldn't go in the attic

    Monopoly is the best
Haven't played it in years (no one will play with me :( )

We played speed monopoly, the second the dice hit the board you had to decide whether to buy or not before the next player rolled.
No auctioning of props, you didn't want it it stayed in the bank.

Fines went to the middle (free parking won it)
We had fines for everything, rolling out of turn, giving the wrong time any little mistake at all.

    Happy days

    R

i have to say i do enjoy it, but it can bring out very ugly colours in some so called friends/family members!

I was in Tesco today, and I saw monopoly and the board was ROUND! We'll have flying cars next! Think it's an anniversary revamp so not sure if it's permanent but looks very weird!

A couple of the design choices I hate about Monopoly:

It's all random -- dice roll dictates everything, and thus THERE IS NO REAL STRATEGY.

Free parking -- completely useless, except it leads to

"Free parking money" -- This isn't even in the design of the game, and yet almost everybody does it. And all it does is make an already random game more lopsided. And it almost impossible to reach the endgame.
The same goes for "Double money if you land on Go".

The endgame -- it takes too long to arrive (2-3hrs at least). Even they admit it:
Edward P. Parker, a former president of Parker Brothers, is quoted as saying, "We always felt that forty-five minutes was about the right length for a game, but Monopoly could go on for hours. Also, a game was supposed to have a definite end somewhere. In Monopoly you kept going around and around."

This lack of a good endgame really annoys me the most, and is the biggest reason why I refuse to play it.

Anytime I play this it always ends up going on for 5/6 hours!! I love this game I got it for Christmas one year. I was always the Labradoodle :)

I don't enjoy this game, but when I do play, I enjoy combining some of the pieces to use as my piece if there are less than six players.

My favourite is putting the hat on the dog and saying "I'm Jesse James" in a slow, western drawl every time I'm moving, which admittedly gets a little irritating after the first few days or so.

Had an unexpected game of monopoly at a friends house during the week... was the new credit card version... was great craic! Although I kinda prefer the version with money.

I love Cluedo too, but my all time favorite is Risk - although we don't play the regular rules - we play for world domination... have been known to keep the same game going for weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭tro81

for anyone interrested i posted a link in the buy and swap section of toys and boardgames for a star wars monopoly set.
ps i love playing monopoly too but seems to bring the mean side out of me. people keep hiding the rule book from me when i want to prove a point hhahhhhahahhaa

Risk... aaah. Played twice last week, having played Monopoly the week before. Monopoly led to fights, yet Risk, the game about fighting, led to less fights. Risk world domination always has a good midgame.... the jostling for position, the tactical alliances, the massive reinforcements and ultimately the unexpected Hitler invasion of Russia-esque backstabbing that changes the game, when one player attacks another with only three players left.... if they take them out and get their cards, they will be in a great position, if they fail, the opponent will probably be in a hopeless position and motivated solely by revenge.... ah, the memories.

Used to love this, marathon games lasting a couple of days, securing one whole side or corner of the board, when people who owed money were short and taking installments from them with interest, or buying their properties at reduced rate, it was dog it dog. Have not played it in a long time though.

Not to mention the "allegiances" between players that breakdown mid game... and the non strategic players that randomly attack anyone.. and the annoying players that dont take any risks at all and annoyingly always wager 1 man... i

Monopoly is such a great game. Playing it with my family is ridiculous. One cousin always hides a 500 until we're all nearly bankrupt and then she crack's it out.

BUT my heart will always belong to scrabble. So much so that I often look up Scrabble words: "Qi," "Xiu," etc.

Was never a massive fan of monopoly, although my brothers loved it.
We'd the Dublin edition , (and when we had got it , we were living in Crumlin , which was one of the cheapest areas on the board!).
If you've any interest in it at all , its worth geting hold of this though , as its a very funny read, and almost got me wanting to play it again.

    I still love Monopoly.

I used to play it with my sisters. The game would go on for days because we used to allow loans to each other from the bank. The game usually ended when the bank ended up broke from all the loans:rolleyes:
